L EGACY L AND A NEWSLETTER OF THE KENNEBUNK LAND TRUST Summer 1 6 After sixteen years of exhilarating conservation work, I will resign from my position as Executive Director of Kennebunk Land Trust effective September 1, 2016. Over these many years, I have experienced personal and professional rewards too numerous to detail. Most important to me is that I have had the great pleasure of working with some really wonderful people; people with talent, creativity, heart and compassion, enthusiasm and commitment. These folks have made all the difference. With the successful completion of the Trust’s For All Forever campaign, this marks an optimum time for me to depart. The Trust is strong and continues to serve an important role in the local community; I feel proud of my contributions to this end. As many of you may know, I am passionate about the environment. But it’s time now for me to turn to other interests about which I am also passionate and that I have put to the side in favor of my environmental commitment. While I am not yet certain about next steps, it is time to write the next chapter. I will miss seeing many of you, although quite likely our paths will cross. It is with sincere thanks that I bid a warm adieu. And, as we say, a la prochaine! After sixteen years of exhilarating conservation work, I will resign from my position as Executive Director of Kennebunk Land Trust effective September 1, 2016.

The Trust is strong and continues to serve an important role

in the local community; I feel proud of my contributions to this end.

As many of you may know, I am passionate about the environment. But it’s time now for me to turn to other interests about which I am also passionate and that I have put to the side in favor of my environmental commitment. While I am

not yet certain about next steps, it is time to write the next chapter.

I will miss seeing many of you, although quite likely our paths will cross. It is with sincere thanks that I bid a warm adieu. And, as we say, a la prochaine!

Day of CaringAgain this year, Kennebunk Land Trust participated in United Way’s Day of Caring. For the 16th year, a fabulous team of employees from Pratt & Whitney joined in the effort and considerable trail work was accomplished at two of the Trust’s preserves. A new trail system was completed Oxbow Preserve on Spiller Drive in Kennebunk, and upgrades were made at The Secret Garden Preserve, also in Kennebunk. All of us at KLT appreciate this outstanding and loyal group of volunteers from

Pratt and Whitney, many of whom returned to work with us for the sixteenth time. Volunteerism is at the heart of the Land Trust’s success.

For All Forever...Kennebunk Land Trust’s mission is to permanently conserve and steward land to benefit natural and human communities. And to that end, it has been 12 very exciting months at KLT.

Following 13 years of dialogue and consideration, the Trust signed a Purchase & Sales agreement with members of the Leander O. Crepeau Estate in May of 2015. The signing of that document marked the need for and the beginning of a significant capital campaign to raise the required $600K to complete the project. We are very happy to report that on May 27, 2016 the Trust reached its financial goal and completed the purchase of this spectacular 111-acre parcel.

From the onset, the Board of Directors and Staff of the Trust understood that broad support would be required to raise the necessary funds. With that belief at the center of our undertaking, we launched a thoughtful, well-developed campaign designed to involve the greatest number of people to create success. The response was powerful. Folks immediately came forward to help with all sorts of things: mailings, sign-painting, phone calling, research, design work, more mailings, more calling, and they also reached into their pockets and gave. Every gift, of every size, is what led to success.

Along the way, there were meetings with the Selectmen from the Town of Kennebunk, followed by an inspiring 73% favorable referendum vote by the people of Kennebunk. That ballot vote approved a Town contribution of $100K. Also along the way, we led property tours, people talked to friends who talked to more friends, businesses jumped in – both to give and to sponsor events to benefit the effort. Next, For All Forever decals started showing up on cars and in windows. People began to call the KLT office asking “How’s the campaign going? Good luck, I hope it happens, I’ll try to send another check.” Grants were awarded, private foundations responded with funding, and Kennebunk Savings Bank helped us to leverage more donations with a Challenge Match Grant. And, all the while, our friends at York County Coast Star paid

great attention to the campaign, gave regular updates in print, and offered a full editorial endorsement in early 2016.

It started with a simple canoe paddle past the property in 2002, followed by a walk on the property to the river’s edge. That’s what sparked a conversation that began years ago. At the time, the river field was lined with corn stalks that had been picked clean for market, the ears long since buttered and enjoyed. The air was fresh and nearly silent, a few chittering birds, nothing more to be heard. The thought that ignited this effort was . . .everyone should have the chance to be in a place like this one.

Now permanently conserved, this place truly is For All Forever. This land is for everyone and their kids and their kids, too. With time, Kennebunk Land Trust will develop plans to install trail systems with consideration given to avian, wildlife and vegetation species on site. As it makes those plans, KLT will keep in mind that this mile of undisturbed river frontage helps to keep the water body clean for fish life and more, and it will remember that this great patch of unlit ground will help to maintain the wondrous dark night sky.

For All Forever is a place where everyone may enjoy quiet time and recreation. In particular, this is a place we may all return to and be reminded of just how important green space is to all life forms. And, may we all keep in mind that it is by working together that we get things done.

This year’s auction was another fine success. True to KLT tradition, guests were convivial, auction items were many, the bidding was competitive, food and drink delicious, and several thousand dollars were raised for the Trust’s For AllForever land acquisition that was completed in late May.

We extend sincere thanks to all of our supporters, friends and donors who helped to make this event a success for

the sixteenth time!

Who made the world?Who made the swan, and the black bear?

Who made the grasshopper? This grasshopper, I mean –

the one who has flung herself out of the grass, the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,

who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down – who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes. Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.

Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.

I do know how to pay attention, how to fall downinto the grass, how to kneel in the grass,

how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields, which is what I have been doing all day.Tell me, what else should I have done?

Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?Tell me, what is it you plan to do

with your one wild and precious life?
