The Lancaster ISD Department of Fine Arts showed-up and showed-out at Dallas Northpark Center December twelfth at their annual showcase performance.

“We got this invitation a couple of years ago when the High School Choir started this process, then we started adding on with Elementary Honor Choir, Dance, etc,” says District Director of Fine Arts Garry Williams.

“It is important we are at Northpark Center because our students need to experience performing outside our community and also people not in our community need to see our students perform different genres of music.”

This performance serves as a springboard for Lancaster’s performing artists.

“There are five students in DC3 that have taken their previous experience here and are now dancing with other companies,” says LHS Director of Dance Carla Wattley-Bradley.

“Just having that performance experience gives them an edge.”

Lancaster High School and other schools throughout the District experienced the Hour of Code in early December.

“The hour of code is a nation wide push to get students involved in actively coding, which is telling machines what they would want the machines to do through programming,” said Lancaster High School CTE Instructor of Business Management Sonia Jackson.

This program is here to help us all get the same opportunities no matter what color or race.

“Everybody deserves an opportunity not just one particular aspect one group all areas regardless of their fluent low social economic everybody deserves this opportunity, “ said District Director of Blended Learning Kimberly Lane-Clark.

The coding event is part of Lancaster ISD’s positioning as a premier STEM district in the State of Texas.

“This a district wide initiative because of the fact that coding in extremely important computer signs are extremely important. It started about 5 years ago , basically a national event so when I came in I wanted to make sure that our kids had an opportunity to actually participate in the hour of code as well,” added Clark.

The District-wide kick-off for Hour of Code was December 3 at Pleasant Run Elementary School.

The Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame has recognized and honored Lancaster ISD Chief of Athletic and Public Relations, Coach Beverly D. Humphrey, for her achievements.

“It was unbelievable. I was excited. The first person I called was my mom because we talk about things: what the future holds and what should be the next steps. I am an only child, so it was just a great moment for mother and daughter to just be happy,” said Humphrey.

As black woman living in America, Humphrey has had to take a unique approach to her career.

“When I started my career, being female and black wasn’t that popular in the field that I’m in. So, I worked hard. I mean harder than hard to achieve my goals. I always had my dreams if what it would look like when it’d start happening and what that was going to look like for me. Including my family, my husband, my mom, and my dad...we always talked about that. Now I’m in 4 or five halls of fame. This is what are dream was,”she added.

Her motivation is she lives what she does.

“A lot of people say that. They say that, but loving what you do is in your action. It’s how you approach it. It’s how much you think about it. It’s the planning of it. To answer that question...my motivation is kids. That’s what I’m thinking about all the time. How I can make somebody better, how I can improve this, how I can make this bigger or more glamorous, or whatever. Kids motivate me to do that, and family too.”

With achievements and titles comes great responsibility.

“Being a good role model every day. Being a disciplinarian every day. If you have your shirt and it’s un-tucked, I will tell you five million times to tuck your shirt in. That’s consistency. That is what makes champions. I’m responsible in many ways for what my kids become. They have mothers and fathers and they have family, but in my little role and my little piece in the world I’m going to make sure you know you’re alright.”

Ms. Humphrey is currently writing a book about her experiences.

Each year, Lancaster High School presents a STEM Expo to showcase its Science, Technology, Engineering and Math programs.

“The STEM Expo is an annual event that showcases student learning across our district as well as career pathways at CTE and other learning,“ stated District Curriculum and Instruction Team Member Faith Malika.

Malika, along with other Curriculum and Instruction team members LaTasha Murry and Erica Butler, play an important role in planning for the expo as well as supporting the teachers with their implementation of stem lessons in the classrooms.

“We’ll have in this years’ expo, a book fair and a 4C competition which is a 21st century skills: communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity,“ explained Murry.

The theme this year is “Next Level.”

“With STEM being infused everywhere we’re encompassing the community. How is it in the community, our everyday lives, and in the classroom,” stated Butler.

This year’s expo is January 25 at Lancaster High School.

There was a Truancy Prevention Meeting on December 17, 2019 at the Lancaster ISD SEEC Building. The meeting was help in order to give expert advice to parents/guardians on truancy prevention.

The meeting was held as an LISD Police Department Truancy Initiative. Prevention meetings are held in order to discuss the importance of school attendance.

“If students are not in school they’re missing their education and not being able to be successful in life,” states Lancaster ISD Truancy Coordinator Dona Mitchell.

There will be additional meetings in the new year.

New UIL District Realignment Numbers

ReleasedOn December 3, the UIL (University Interscholastic League, the governing body over Texas public high school sport and academic competitions) released their new alignment numbers based on school population.

This year, Lancaster High School had a population of 2099 students on November 1, which was snapshot day (the day the UIL takes its census.) That number puts the Tigers firmly in the middle of 5A - division 1. Again.

“It’s actually what we’re accustomed to,” says Head Football Coach Chris Gilbert.

“Our challenge is pre-District scheduling. We have a hard time getting teams in 5A to play us so we end-up with difficult pre-season games and typically play up to accommodate.”

The release of the numbers caused a stir among high school sports fans and watchers across the state.

“Realignment is such a big deal because it gives you a glimpse of your new district opponents in all sports - along with your playoff path as well,” says Matt Stepp with Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.

New alignments will be announced in early February.
