Mahalos to Lourdes, Jane, Rose, Helen, Diane, Moana, and all for your kokua. Extending GET WELL wishes to Elizabeth, Ellen, Loretta, China, Julita and Richard. March winds blew in UH school of Nursing stu-dents who come and do FREE health screening quite often. The Alzheimer's Association presented an ex-tremely well put together “Talk Story” time with members which uncovered something great...what?... Gregory Jeong and Elizabeth Farias were once residents of Kaka’ako...a “podagee” town that is being redeveloped by our current mayor.
Short shorts: Welcome back Judy and Aloha to Larry Ferreira (relocating to Colorado), peace to Nora Rico and Leimomi Berengue. Did I miss anything or anyone? Hopefully not...otherwise see me at the next Wednesday. Until Then ate ja!
While many kinds of flowers blossom in Japan, people’s favorite flower is sakura, the cherry blossom, and April is the time for sakura. The color and shape of the flowers symbolize purity and simplicity, and their short-lived bloom reflects the shortness of life. For Japanese people, this symbolizes the way of human life where ris-ing, blossoming, and falling are part of our natural destiny.
The month of April brings us speakers who will give presentations on dental and eye care. Dr. Cecile Sebastian, an experienced dentist in delivering quality dental care to adults and children, will give a talk on “Dentistry and How It Affects One’s Overall Health”. Dr. John Olkowski, who is a fellowship-trained corneal sur-gery specialist, and the Chief Surgeon at EyeSight Hawaii, will focus on the aging eye and ‘’How To keep Your Eyes Healthy’’.
Want to learn how to save on energy? Come and listen to Helen Wai, from Hawaii Energy, who will give helpful tips on energy saving.
April birthday celebrants will enjoy a talented musical group of singers and dancers called Shinshju Kyokai Group, led by Nelson Yoshioka. Happy Birthday wishes to all of our celebrants, especially our 90+ Takejiro Higa, Shizue Ishihara, Chieko Sugimoto, Mii Takakuwa, and a very special Happy Birthday greeting to our Honoree of the month, GLADYS GOKA, who is an amazing 100 years young – WOW! Con-gratulations. May you all be blessed with many more years of good health and long life. Events: 4/6 – Dr. Cecile Sebastian 4/13 – Helen Wai/Energy Saving 4/20 – Birthday 4/27 – Dr. John Olkowski
Japanese Cultural Club by Judi Yogi
The Korean Club will be hosting a Korean Kimbap Cooking Class lead by Toni Lee on Thursday, April 23rd.
Mabuhay and Salamat to Wilma and Rudolpho Ibay for the extra help at our meeting setting up and dismantling things. March Birthday Celebrants were entertained by the Happy Tappers of Lanakila. Thank you Mary and your dancers for sharing your talented tapping toes. Vic and Barry also dominated the audience with their jazzy, snazzy and classy tunes. April’s calendar of events is filled with freebies I.E. Health screenings, seminars, and club happenings. Don’t miss the jitney… Jump on and enjoy the fun!

We had wonderful programs and entertainment during the month of March, thanks to Program Chair Flora Nakasone. On March 5, the Naleo Nahe Nahe, a group of Seniors who are more like professional entertain-ers, came with their Hawaiian musical instruments of ukulele, guitars and bass guitar to accompany the singers and provide live music for the dancers. Women dancers were joined by a male dancer who claimed he was 84 yrs old. Amazing, as he was able to keep up with all the hula motions and be right on beat. We enjoyed many tunes familiar to our generation, including some Japanese songs.
Speakers are very special when they can hold the attention of a senior audience. Jeffrey Roche from the Honolulu Fire Dept. did just that as he came on March 12 and spoke on a topic we’ve heard before: “Senior Fire & Fall Prevention”. Being a local boy and sharing his background of having gone through job after job be-fore finding his calling as a fire fighter the last 12 years, he kept our interest as he reminded us of the important elements of staying safe in your own home; among them being good lighting, uncluttered walkways, lighted stairwells, regular exercise, and installing smoke alarms. Unfortunately, there is at least a 2-year wait for instal-lation of the free smoke alarms so even if you sign up, it may be worth the cost to get and install your own.
Kuhio Day being on Thursday, March 26, our last meeting was on March 19 as we celebrated our monthly birthdays. We honored 8 members, including Esther Ramones (92) and Jerry Ojiri (93) who had the honor of blowing out the birthday candles. God bless all of you with many more healthy years. We enjoyed another fantastic variety show as Nelson Yoshioka and his group of karaoke singers entertained us. The pro-gram included solo hula and ukulele numbers. Mahalo to Nelson and his talented group of performers.

Tuesday, March 10th was our Hawaiian Club day to celebrate birthdays in January, February, and March. They are Greg, John, Cecilia, Gertrude, Sharon, and Mei. Janet opened up the meetings this month. Francis and Betty were in charge of getting food for the club during the month of March. They ordered and brought in delicious Chinese food. Janet also brought in some real ono goodies. John made some delicious cold drinks. Everyone had a nice time.
Excursion Opportunity: Honolulu Hale Open House on Tuesday April, 28th 2015. Learn about local government and meet city officials. Sign up at the Front Desk
Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center’s (LMPSC) held an eventful health screening in cooperation with the National Kidney Foundation of Hawai‘i (NKFH). Members participated in tak-ing the next steps in living healthier lives. The National Kidney Foundation of Hawai‘i provided an amazing group of registered clinicians and nurses to come and administer health screenings to check for kidney disease and high blood pressure. It was a great success with over 43 members receiving tests for kidney disease and living healthy. Mahalo to the National Kidney Foundation of Hawai‘i for making a difference in the lives of our kūpuna. [Written by Program Specialist, Justin Trubiani]
