4 LAMPPOST

The opening of this school year has been truly joyful. Students, faculty, and staff have settled into that familiar hum of school life. I am pleased to report that after a year of study and reflection, the Strategic Initiatives Committee of the Board of Trustees has completed a comprehensive document titled, “Lighting Our Path…Strategic and Academic Plans for The Lamplighter School.”

The plans with which you will become familiar could not have been developed without a strong school culture where input from the community is expected and encouraged. The Lamplighter community includes all of us: Board members, parents, grandparents, alums, past parents, faculty, and staff. I am eager to share details of the new opportunities at upcoming breakfast meetings.

Over the past year at Lamplighter, I have observed and felt a strong and positive school culture. This allows every member of the community to feel part of something big, and yes, something very important: that is, the education of our students. The care that is taken in the development of curriculum ensures that the proper amount of emphasis is placed upon both core and special subjects. The social/emotional curriculum is also given equal emphasis. The culture of our school values a close-knit community and Lamplighter pulls you in from the very beginning! Many friendships begin when students are in the Early Childhood program and become lifelong. We hear from alums that this supportive culture that is emblematic of Lamplighter sustains them for years. In many schools, the culture may appear too ubiquitous to define clearly, too pervasive to grasp fully and too complex to evaluate, but the culture of Lamplighter School is the heart of the experience for each student.

A school’s culture is largely defined by its priorities. This includes the traditions, what and how the school celebrates, and what is accepted by the majority as the norm. All too often, school culture is left to develop on its own. At Lamplighter, it is obvious that every member of the community both past and present has purposefully crafted, influenced, and improved upon aspects of the culture. Our school, at almost 60 years old, is perfectly poised for the next step.

Wishing you a wonderful fall season!

Joan Buchanan Hill, Ed.D. Head of School

Dear Lamplighter Community,

Dear Lamplighter Community,

So many great things have been going on around campus and in town with regards to Lamplighter.

First and foremost, our dynamic Head of School Joan Hill begins her second year at the helm. Between moving to a new city and becoming the head of Lamplighter, Joan also found time to complete her Ed.D degree at the University of Pennsylvania. Please congratulate Dr. Hill on this awesome accomplishment if you haven’t already. Under Joan’s leadership, the school is positioned for a great year. Some of you have been to our grade level science

nights already, an amazing benefit of our partnership with the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. Another benefit will be our joint lecture held at the museum by Bill Nye the Science Guy on January 30.

Joan continues to forge meaningful connections within the Dallas educational community and the community at large, and Lamplighter will be the primary beneficiary of her initiatives. One such example I hope many of you got to enjoy is the Arboretum, where we had a picnic in September during the remarkable Chihuly exhibit.

On campus, we are humbled and elated to have completed the fundraising for our permanent home at 11611 Inwood Road. This milestone has been a long time in the making and sincere thanks go to all of you who helped make this purchase possible. Very special thanks go out to our student and young alumni donors who put their hard-earned allowance and car wash money into the Land Fund. We hope many of you got to attend the special Hootenanny to celebrate the land given by noted musician Jimmy LaFave in September.

As homeowners the Board of Trustees was able to start serious planning for our

next few years on campus. In January, we started the strategic planning process led by Board of Trustees Vice-Chair Catherine Rose. Catherine has done an amazing job shepherding myriad constituencies through this exhaustive process. The end result will be a road map for our future that will be rolled out by Joan and her team in the coming weeks and months. Many of you helped provide input for this process and we are really excited for you to see our finished product.

In the winter and spring, Lamplighter will begin the onsite portion of its reaccreditation by ISAS, the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest. There has already been a lot of work done on the reporting requirements, and we hope to pass our review with flying colors this spring.

We have an amazing group of children, assisted ably by an involved, nurturing faculty and a tremendous, supportive parent community. From our precious little rookies in pre-K, to our Spectacular Seniors, let us all have a great year filled with learning and laughter. And please, buy more eggs! Best regards,

Alex Nila K. SharmaBoard Chair

Lamplighter Celebrates Success of the

On a Friday afternoon in late September, students, faculty, staff, and members of the community gathered in the well of the auditorium for a sing-a-long. Special guest, Texas folk musician and songwriter, Jimmy LaFave, led the community in a memorable sing-a-long. Better known as Hootenannies, sing-a-longs are a long standing tradition at Lamplighter. The school’s founders, Natalie Murray and Sandy Swain, believed that children should come together and sing - especially for celebrations!

Mr. LaFave, a long time friend of parent and trustee Kelcy Warren, accepted the invitation to lead the concert sing-a-long. After being introduced by Dr. Hill, he warmed up his young audience with a Woody Guthrie classic children’s song,

“Put Your Finger in the Air” and followed with tunes such as “Deep in the Heart of Texas,” and “This Land is Your Land”.

The Hootenanny concluded with a special offering to Mr. LaFave from the children when they stood and sang “Lamplighter Spirit” to him. Dr. Hill thanked Mr. LaFave and all those in attendance for joining together in song and commemorating a significant moment in Lamplighter’s history. The celebration culminated in an extra recess for the children on the best playground in Dallas.

We are grateful to all the families and individuals who made the purchase of our home a reality.

The acquisition of land from The Hockaday School provides a permanent home for Lamplighter and reaching the 12.5 million dollar fundraising goal offered an opportunity for celebration.

CampusNewsSecond Grade Is the Buzz of

the DMA Art BallArtwork created by Lamplighter second grade students was displayed in April at the Dallas Museum of Art as part of the Young Artists Program. Each year, the DMA hosts the Art Ball, an annual auction, and student artwork from area schools is displayed before and during this event. This year, the theme was Wanderlust created by New York-based designer Douglas Little, whose vision was to build a “dreamy, fantasy-filled environment” with invented creatures and insects created by students.

The DMA presented Wanderlust: Art Ball 2012 on April 14. According to the museum, wanderlust is defined as the “intense desire to roam the world, and so many of the magnificent works of art in the DMA’s collection are inspired by

travel and exploration.” To assist in bringing the wanderlust theme to fruition, internationally renowned designer and “fragrance master” Douglas Little served as the Art Ball 2012 Art Director. Area schools, both private and public, are selected each

year to participate in this grand event. Lamplighter has been selected several times in years past.

Lamplighter second graders were a natural choice to participate in this incredible opportunity because of the integrated curriculum on insects at the school this time of year, according to art teacher Pam O’Krent. The students created fantasy insects made with papier-mache, “each unique in its design, use of materials, and colors,” she described.

Douglas transformed the museum space into an imaginary environment into where all the fantasy creatures and insects were integrated. “I couldn’t wait to see what he did!” exclaimed O’Krent. A reception for the young artists and their families was held April 5, the first day of the exhibit. The School was “proud to highlight our exceptional student artwork in a world-class venue” observed Lamplighter Head of School Joan Hill.

Science Teacher Bill Burton

“Inspiration can be found anywhere, without

warning,” says Bill Burton when asked about the

project-based activities he has designed. Burton

inspires enthusiasm in his students with his

inventive projects but he also inspires children

outside the Lamplighter community. His

activity on “Camouflage Critters” was published

in Highlights magazine in September and another

of the activities he invented, “Experiencing

Friction in First Grade,” was published in Science

and Child magazine in October.

When Lamplighter first graders participated

in the activity on friction, they came to class to

find a few hundred tennis balls on the floor.

Burton stood nearby, with a Vernier lab probe,

measuring and graphing the force exerted

as his students pulled themselves across

the floor on top of the tennis balls. During

this exercise, students learned not only how

friction affects the amount of force needed,

but also how to interpret graphs. The students’

joyful faces attested to their excitement, but

it was clear that Burton was as excited about

the activity as his students. “I try to invent

activities that I would like to have done when

I was in science class,” he says enthusiastically.

When a teacher is creative and inquisitive, his

excitement is contagious.

Sarah Mathews, Pre-Kindergarten Teacher“Start singing tomorrow,” writes Sarah Mathews in her article, “Singing Smoothes Classroom Transitions,” published in Dimensions in Early Childhood magazine (Volume 40, Number 1, 2012). Lamplighter’s pre-K teacher models the love of learning that Lamplighter instills in its students. In addition to her article on singing in the classroom, Mathews has co-authored two additional articles. In her classroom, she encourages her students to try new things and take risks, helping them to build their confidence. “I really enjoy working with young children,” says Mathews about teaching pre-K, “because I love the dramatic growth you can see in them over the course of the year.”

Mattingly Dream MakersPatricia Vermillion, Lamplighter’s Media Center coordinator, says she was honored to be this past year’s Mattingly Award recipient. Her dream was to travel to Florence, Italy, and participate in the Creativity Workshop. “I would like to thank the Mattingly committee, and especially Pat Mattingly, for the opportunity to fulfill my dream,” she said.

The workshop consisted of 30 participants from all over the world, guided through the creative process by two instructors.

The group was shown techniques for overcoming writer’s block, gaining self-confidence in their ideas, using memories to engage imagination, and working with different mediums to develop their creativity.

“As a group, we discovered how to use our creativity for a lifetime of learning, giving ourselves the time, permission, and nourishment to do

the creative projects we love, and establishing a 15-minutes-a-day creativity practice to accomplish these goals,” Vermillion explained. “The techniques suggested were automatic drawing, automatic writing, storytelling, visualization and relaxation, and exercise.”

One class assignment was to photograph and sketch the beautiful doors throughout Florence. She described how the group was sent to cafés to pick out a victim and then “sketch and write about the victim.” Then as a group, she said they shared “cappuccinos, gelato, tortellini, and pastry. Arrivederci!”

Clang, clang, clang went the trolley!

CampusNewsLamplighter Celebrates Back to Schooly With ChihulyHundreds from Lamplighter community enjoy back-to-school picnic at Dallas Arboretum.

The Lamplighter community came together on a beautiful September Sunday afternoon at the Dallas Arboretum for a day of Chihuly and cheer. “Community is defined by the renowned philosopher of modern educational theory, John Dewey, as not just a place to live, but an active way to live together. The Lamplighter community certainly demonstrated this yet again,” said Head of School Dr. Joan Hill.

The families feasted on picnics, visited with teachers, and were thrilled to explore the Chihuly exhibit! Enhanced by the cooler temperatures, it was a glorious day for Lamplighters as they celebrated going back to school.

It was also Grandparents Day at the Arboretum, so many folks brought their extended families along to enjoy the day. The turnout was strong with more than 300 in attendance. The families explored the amazing exhibit, relaxed on blankets, dug into their picnic baskets, and feasted on food and drinks.

As noted on the Arboretum website, “The intriguing garden sculptures of legendary glass artist Dale Chihuly premiered May 5 to the delight of all ages at the award-winning Dallas Arboretum. His dramatic sculptures and installations bring bold colors and imagination, beautifully executed throughout the 66-acre garden.”

The Lamplighter School community has donated nearly 2500 pairs of shoes for Soles4Souls, a non-profit organization that collects new and used shoes to give relief to victims of abject suffering and poverty around the world. Students beamed with pride as they tossed their shoes into donation boxes – Nikes, Stride Rites, cowboy boots, and even Mom’s stilettos! Of course, the children had great fun going back to their classrooms barefoot.

The 2,473 pairs of shoes weighing 2100 pounds were collected and packed in 76 boxes. That means 2,473 people will have a new pair of shoes. Head of school Dr. Joan Hill, said “it could not have been possible without everyone’s help. Thanks to the community for reaching deep into your closets and even buying new shoes to help others.” According to Director of Operations Marynell Murphy who spearheaded the month-long effort, “The students had a great time finishing the boxing and loading the shoes on the truck…Way to go Lamplighter!”

The initiative continued through mid-September at which time students helped load the shoes onto trucks. “It was amazing to see the children’s faces as they donated their shoes and walked back to classrooms barefoot! But that way, they were able to feel empathy for those without shoes and pride in themselves for giving to others and providing a solution at the same time,” commented Lamplighter parent Nancy Buss.

By recycling your gently worn shoes with the charity, the discarded footwear will be given a second chance at life. The shoes are redistributed through

the charity’s international and domestic partners, so millions of children and adults can receive their very first pair of shoes.

“The Lamplighter School is committed to Soles4Souls and its endeavor to deliver shoes to over 300 million children around the world,” added Hill. “We kicked off our shoe drive the first week of school when students gathered for our first Hootenanny, an assembly where we celebrate with songs.”

Soles4Souls is ramping up efforts to help individuals in need this fall and is grateful to The Lamplighter School for getting on board to help those without shoes. Individuals can help by donating some of the 700 million pairs of shoes thrown away by Americans each year. “We have always been proud to say we do our part to keep footwear out of landfills, and hopefully put them on the feet of someone in need,” said Kevin Goughary, CEO of Soles4Souls. Goughary is hopeful other groups will join Lamplighter in this initiative “to collect gently worn footwear, and possibly improve the quality of someone’s daily life.”

Soles4Souls has distributed more than 19 million pairs of shoes around the world with the help of partners such as Lamplighter. With one in every four adults in the world living in extreme poverty, basic necessities like shoes are simply unavailable to many. In developing nations like Haiti, Honduras, and Tanzania, walking is the main form of transportation, and shoes can protect a person’s feet from cuts and infections. Also, children in other parts of the world cannot attend school without a pair of shoes.

Lamplighter Kicks Off Shoe Drive

School community puts best foot forward, donating nearly 2500 shoes to non-profit Soles4Souls.

Lamplighter Spreads Its Wings at Earth Day Dallas

Young Alums Car Wash Cleans Up

Motivated young alums raise funds benefitting “The Campaign for the Future”

Lamplighter’s Young Alumni Association sponsored its second annual car wash in May. Similar to last year’s inaugural fundraiser, the May 19 event successfully raised more than $7000 to apply to the School’s land fund. Lamplighter purchased our land from neighboring Hockaday School in 2010.

Alums Katie Payne and Maya Sawla, planned and organized the event and along with their team of alumni, met every month leading up to the big day. They strategized, lobbied sponsors, designed posters and banners, and collected towels, sponges, and all other necessary supplies in preparation.

Last year’s chair, Kate Mosle, believes the reason the car wash events have been so successful is because Lamplighter produces enthusiastic and hardworking alumni. “They are more than willing to come back to school to help out, and because of experience

with activities like Lamplighter Layers, [the School’s incorporated chicken-raising and egg-selling business], alumni are good at organizing and putting things together,” she explained.

Katie Kerrigan, Lamplighter Alum

and senior at ESD, said she enjoyed seeing alumni of all ages alongside current Lamplighter students “coming together to help and support Lamplighter.” She described how the project was “a great example of how strong our community is” and “it’s awesome to see everyone support the school they love.”

“I loved seeing those kids out there working hard and having fun to support a place that means so much to them,” agreed Lamplighter parent Jackie Katz. “I want my kids to know that they can always be involved and give back to a school that has given them so much.”

“The Happy Alright,” a band featuring Lamplighter alumni Quinn Breitfeller and Sterling Gavinski, played two sets for the entertainment of the crowd. The young alumni sold cookies, lemonade, water, and t-shirts. Pinkberry donated free frozen yogurt. Everyone who participated seemed to enjoy the afternoon as they listened to original music and enjoyed snacks while their cars were washed and shined. They proudly contributed to the School’s land purchase one rinse at a time.

The Lamplighter School participated in the annual Earth Day Dallas, a two-day educational celebration which drew tens of thousands of visitors to the State Fairgrounds in April. With live chickens in attendance, a live “feed” of chickens from the School’s barnyard, chicken-themed activities, and a student dressed as a chicken, Lamplighter truly spread its wings in an effort to promote its achievements as a green leader and to help educate attendees on how to be environmentally responsible.

The Lamplighter School, in its first appearance at the event, offered more than just chicken feed. The school’s booth, decorated with an arch of red and white balloons, featured banners with photos of students involved in a variety of “green” activities including composting and recycling. Visitors were greeted by a team of volunteers who gave out 1000 bags of green bean seeds. “We handed out hundreds of bean seeds – several said they were going to try growing them in pots!” commented Teacher Gayle McCoy. “I loved hearing visitors say what a great booth we provided!” she continued.

The highlight of the booth was of course the chickens. Lamplighter, founded in 1953 in a farmhouse on Churchill Way in north Dallas, true to its roots, features an actual barnyard on its campus today – complete with chickens and farm animals. Fourth grader Kirsten Kirk, president of Lamplighter Layers, the School’s chicken-raising and egg-selling corporation, dressed as a chicken both to proudly represent her school and to promote an environmentally conscious lifestyle. Throughout the day, she posed for photos with people, both young and old some from other schools. “They thought our booth was pretty cool,” she observed.

Margaret Johanssen Hirsch ‘89“I believe that the very heart of the gift that Lamplighter gives its students is a lifelong love of learning. Lessons were brought to life when we sold eggs to parents in the carpool line, or watched as we created a flood in our clay version of the Nile River. I have grown up seeing school not as a requirement of childhood, but as a chance to satisfy my curiosity. I can’t imagine any greater motivation for learning.

Lamplighter is forging new partnerships with organizations such as the Perot Museum of Nature and Science as part of its constant quest to stimulate students’ innate curiosity and to make learning fun and exciting. Lamplighter’s dedication to this mission has remained steady in the two decades since I graduated, and I am sincerely impressed that the school has never stopped searching for new and innovative ways to fulfill that promise to its students. Such commitment is quite an accomplishment, and one that should be truly applauded.”

Family TiesThe Morgan/Johanssen Family

Throughout the years, The Lamplighter School has served families whose members have encompassed more than one generation, and have included various family ties. We are pleased to share the stories of a family who together have spent many wonderful years at Lamplighter.

In this issue, we recognize the invaluable contributions of the Morgan/Johanssen family with the following letters from three family members whose support of Lamplighter dates from 1982 to today. Six Morgan/Johanssen students have attended or are attending the school. Family members have served on a variety of school related committees, and Jon Morgan began his first term as a member of the Board of Trustees this year. The Lamplighter community extends its appreciation to the ongoing efforts of this wonderful family.

Michelle Morgan Lockhart

“I had always wanted to give the gift of Lamplighter to my children, as all my

siblings attended, and I was wildly envious of their cherished experiences.

In fact, we took our admission tour when our son Billy was still in a bouncy

seat, and I immediately felt comfortable and welcomed at the school.

What appeared to us as simply playing all day was actually a targeted and

dedicated curriculum that quietly advanced each year until it all culminated

in the fourth grade. Billy was having such a fabulous time that he didn’t

realize he was acquiring new skills, talents, and competencies.

Lamplighter will always be a special and cherished part of Billy’s life. It

instilled in him the paramount relationship between learning and fun. It is

this solid foundation of curiosity, creativity, and kindness that has prepared

him for his future and will make him adaptable to the inevitable hurdles

along the way. Thank you Lamplighter for lighting his lamp with the joy

of learning.”

grade with a healthy dose of optimism and “can-do” spirit having been

encouraged every step of the way by nurturing and supportive teachers.

I specifically recall that I possessed the presence and self-awareness

to make this new school work for my skills and my personality. By

encouraging my individuality, Lamplighter allowed me to enter the

next phase of my education with a unique self-assuredness.

An important aspect of what I possess as a result of my Lamplighter

experiences is the skill of critical thinking. Even in my early years,

Lamplighter teachers were always encouraging a new angle, a

different approach, an alternative interpretation. I give Lamplighter credit for the gift of my 360-degree view of the world, and I will be forever grateful.

At Lamplighter, the proof is in the kids – courageous, confident, and (most importantly) happy. We are blessed as a family to be involved, and look forward to many more years of doing so.”

Every dollar of this essential fund supports the vision of Lamplighter’s founders: To ignite the lamp of a child’s imagination... Annual Fund dollars support the classroom experience by: • Ensuring professional development opportunities for faculty and staff • Providing state-of-the-art technology • Acquiring current curriculum materials • Supporting student enrichment with innovative programs

A successful Annual Fund campaign depends on participation from every member of our school community. We reached 100% participation from trustees, faculty and staff last year. This year we hope to raise parent participation from 95% to100%. Parent participation of 100% is always the goal of the Annual Fund.
