    Inflammation that leads todisruption of the blood-flow tothe sensitive & insensitive

    lamina

    Disruption of the attachmentmechanism between the

    sensitive & insensitive lamina

    Lamina attach the coffin boneto the hoof capsule.

    In severe cases the bone and hoof wallseparate and the coffin bone may bedisplaced downward.

    Laminitis: Sinking

    In the most severecases the coffin bonecan sink and penetrate

    the bottom of the sole.

    This can lead tosloughing of the hoofcapsule.

    NG tube-pump stomach &administer charcoal or oil

    Anti-inflammatories

    Some horses are so severethat they are euthanized forhumane reasons

    Radiographs before shoeingand resetting shoes.

    Important to have goodworking relationship with vetand farrier.

    Dietary restrictions: little or nograss, low carb high fat grain.

    How do I prevent LAMINITIS?

    Keep grain locked up!!

    Gradually introduce horses to greenpasture.

    Good hoof care

    Good preventative health care program

    If you suspect laminitis call you vetIMMEDIATELY!
