Growing Lilies in the Garden
Modern lilies are really easy to grow as long as their few wants are
catered for.
Lilies are best grown in full sun or light shade. In very hot districts
morning sun would be best as then the flowers last longer.
Attention to soil preparation is very important as lilies do best in
well drained, moist compost rich soil.
Lilies should be planted 15cm deep. They should be planted in
their permanent spot as more flowers are produced as they
become established.
Water lightly after planting and don’t let the soil dry out. Add a little
fertiliser to the soil surface after planting.
Oriental Lilies
Orientals are the largest and most flamboyantly flowered of all lilies and
also the most fragrant. Flowers are produced during January and
February on strong, tall multi-flowered stems. A vase will fill a house with
their intense fragrance. Orientals are easily grown and are the most heat
tolerant of all lilies.
