Be Disaster AwareTake Action to Prepare in SeptemberSeptember is National Preparedness Month—a great time to

make sure you and your loved ones are disaster ready.Any time of the year, Lakeway and Central Texas could face

wildfires, tornadoes, flashfloods or manmade disasters. We are in the middle of hurricane season, and August and September are two of the most active months.

“Prevention and preparedness for any disaster is everyone’s responsibility,” Lakeway Police Chief Todd Radford said. “Taking some simple steps before disaster strikes can increase you and your family’s chances of avoiding catastrophe.”

How can anyone prepare for the possibility of these different disasters? Take practical steps, so that you are informed and ready for events beyond your control:

Stay informed. Monitor news reports for emergency information. Remember that there may be no electricity during a disaster, so a hand-crank radio is recommended. Register your cell phone, phone landline, email address or pager to receive Regional Notification System alerts by voice call, email or text at wireless. capcog.org. The City of Lakeway Facebook page (www.facebook.com/cityoflakeway) and Twitter feed (@CityofLakeway), Lake Travis Fire Rescue’s Facebook page and Travis County Emergency Services Facebook (TravisCoEmergencyServices) and Twitter (@TravisCountyES) pages also provide updates during emergencies.

Build a disaster supply kit. Your kit should include enough non-perishable food, one gallon of water per day per person, prescription medication and other supplies, such as flashlights, batteries and a first-aid kit. Keep a list of your family’s disaster supply kit items in the new FEMA app at fema.gov/smartphone-app.

Make a plan that extends from home to vehicle, workplace and other locations. Remember to have supplies at all locations, and keep vehicle fuel tanks at least half full.

Prepare your home and decrease the threat of wildfires to you and your property by following the Ready, Set, Go! brochure at co.travis.tx.us/fire_marshal/.

Get involved – Prepare your community for emergencies: For more information on National Preparedness Month and getting others involved, go to: ready.gov/september or ready.gov/es/septiembre, and follow #NatlPrep.

Benjamin Franklin said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” If you doubt the importance of preparedness, view the “It Started Like Any Other Day” video at: ready.gov/prepare, and join America’s PrepareAthon.

When the band strikes up “Autumn Leaves,” dancers will know the new Lakeway Big Band Bash season has begun Sept. 8. Big Band Bash will celebrate its third anniversary at from 8-10 p.m. at Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek.

Kent Dugan’s 17-piece orchestra, The Republic of Texas Band, will feature well known Lakeway singers David Cummings and Lisa Clark. This band consistently appeals to dancers of many generations. Expect to hear a wide variety of favorite tunes, mostly from the Sinatra era, with fresh arrangements.

A large dance floor and plenty of tables beckon anyone to dance or listen. Lakeway’s Big Band Bashes are on the second Monday of each month. This is a free event, but donations to the band are encouraged. Bring refreshments, if desired, as none are provided. Reservations are not taken, and doors open at 7:30 p.m.

“Get your dancing shoes polished, dress up a bit, and come out to dance and listen to some really great music,” said Fred Newton, Lakeway Arts Committee chairman. “This monthly event shows why living in Lakeway is so much fun.”

Q: Are you investing your life savings or gambling with it? I recently read an article on Yahoo Finance that talked about

3 signs you might be gambling rather than investing your hard earned dollars. As you read through the items below, ask yourself where you currently stand.

Here are the highlights from this article:#1:  If you are picking your own stock portfolio, you may be

gambling. The author of the article says “the idea that you’re going to have inside knowledge, or knowledge that nobody else has” and use it to pick stocks with better returns than the broader market is folly. Individual stocks are always more risky than a diversified portfolio. You’re kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

#2:  If you are trying to time the market in any fashion, you may be gambling. “The trick to investing is not buy and hold, it’s buy and re-balance,” he says.  ”You do want buy low and sell high, but you gotta do it smart.”

#3:  If you are investing based on “track record” or history, you may be gambling. The author says most people decide they want their equity investments spread around in pools like small cap growth or large multinationals. Once that has been decided they go out and look for the mutual funds with the best track record in those specific sectors.

“The reality is 75% of all active fund managers fail to deliver market rate of returns and those 25% who get lucky have zero correlation about repeating in the future,” he says. There’s little if any connection between beating the market one year, and pulling

off the same trick the next.“Don’t chase some hot stock picker or someone even with a 20

or 30 year record.” This is the equivalent of betting on the jockey to win the horse race.

There’s a reason that every single prospectus tells you that “past performance is no guarantee of future results”!

SO WHAT DOES IT MEAN?You can choose to agree or disagree with the authors of the

article.  Your opinion is 100% valid when it comes to how you want to manage your market portfolios.

The key to winning is to make sure that you are limiting your market portfolio positions so that they do not jeopardize your income or your financial security.  No matter what you do, market portfolios equal risk.  It’s fine to pick stocks and watch CNBC as long as you limit yourself.

A great rule of thumb:  imagine your market portfolio going down 25%.  Would it affect your income or your financial security?  If so, you are definitely gambling and one bad month could have a permanent negative impact on the rest of your financial life.

Fantastic Values Behind the Gate!

Lakeway Police Department will stage its semiannual Drug Take-Back Day from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 27 at a new venue, the Lake Travis ISD Educational Development Center, 607 RM 620 N.

The Drug Take-Back Day is moving to take advantage of the popular fifth annual Lakeway Public Safety Day. Partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration, Lakeway police will provide a venue for Lakeway area citizens to properly dispose of unwanted and unused controlled, uncontrolled and over the counter medications at the event.

Lakeway Police Chief Todd Radford strongly encourages participation.

“This drug take-back initiative is very important because it allows people to dispose of medications properly and help ensure the drugs don’t end up in the trash or sewer systems,” Radford explained. “Even more importantly, it keeps them out of the hands of those who may misuse the drugs if they were to gain access to them somehow.”

Each event has shown an increase in the amount of items received. The department’s total in Lakeway now exceeds 1,400 pounds with the addition of 383 pounds collected at its Take-Back

Day in March. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health

issue. More than 7 million Americans abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s national survey on drug use and health. Each day, approximately 2,500 teens use them to get high for the first time, according to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

The collection will be quick, secure and supervised by law enforcement. This is free and open to the public. No effort will be made to count, inventory or log medication or those who are dropping them off. Please note that we will no longer be able to accept needles as a part of the take-back.

Please follow the directional signs to pull in and drop off the medication. Participants also are welcome to enjoy Public Safety Day where more than 14 agencies from Central Texas will bring their helicopters, police cars, motorcycles, SWAT trucks, ambulances, fire trucks and more for the public to experience first-hand.

For information, visit www.lakeway-tx.gov.

Meet the heroes who save lives every day and protect our community at Lakeway P0lice Department’s fifth annual Public Safety Day.

One of the largest events of its kind in the area, the free family-friendly event is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 27 at Lake Travis Educational Development Center, 607 RR 620 N., in Lakeway next to Lake Travis Elementary School.

More than 14 agencies from Central Texas will bring their helicopters, police cars and motorcycles, SWAT trucks, ambulances, fire trucks and more for the public to experience.

The event will feature food and drink vendors, local businesses and nonprofit organizations as well as a kid’s fun zone and live music.

“Nothing is more important to first responders than the

Lakeway’s Public Safety Day to showcase Central Texas first responders

communities we protect,” Lakeway Police Chief Todd Radford said. “Events like this give us an opportunity to educate the public while having fun in a relaxed setting. These interactions are the cornerstone to ensuring that we are keeping our community safe.”

Public Safety Day was founded in 2009 to shine the spotlight on Central Texas first responders and their mission in a fun, educational event for the community. This day gives people a chance to interact with first responders on a level that doesn’t

involve an emergency situation and learn more about what they do and the tools they use.

“Public safety is a year-round mission not limited to a single day,” Radford said, “We look forward to seeing everyone and having a good time at this year’s event.”

Around LakewayWomen’s Club Hosts the“Master of Diversity”

Noted humorist, author and speaker Mary Gordon Spence will address the Women’s Club of Greater Lakeway on Mon., Sept. 22, at the Lakeway Resort and Spa. This event is free to members and their guests.

A self-styled “master of diversity,” Spence grew up in a small Texas town, but has lived in Latin America, taught students from kindergarten to college, directed statewide environmental programs, written Texas history materials, drafted legislation and worked for former president Lyndon B. Johnson.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in education from The University of Texas and a master of arts in intercultural education from la Universidad de las Americas, along with other certifications.

Spence’s Texas accent resonates frequently on Austin’ public radio station KUT, and she is well known for her presentations at conferences and school convocations around the state. In addition, she works with nonprofit organizations to help them craft meaningful stories about their good work, and she teaches English and American culture to teachers from Japan and Korea.

Her goal? “To have everyone speaking English with a Texas accent,” Spence says.

Sharon Gilmore, vice president of programs for Women’s Club, remarked, “Mary Gordon is the perfect speaker to kick off our fall season. She is witty, bright, quick, and down to earth. I know our audience will enjoy her commentary.”

The Sept. 22 event begins at 9:30 a.m. with coffee and conversation. After a brief meeting at 10 a.m., members and guests will enjoy Spence’s presentation. A buffet luncheon follows at 11:30 a.m. by paid reservation. To reserve, call Jan Rouse at 512-261-3056 by Mon., Sept. 15, or by e-mail to [email protected]. Potential members are welcome. Members of Lakeway’s Viewpoints Distinguished Speaker Dinner series have announced the lineup for its 15th season. The series takes place at the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek, on the third Sunday night of October and November and the third Sunday night of January, February and March.

“This is a great lineup of speakers,” said Jean Hennagin, who chaired the speakers committee this year.  “Our mission is to enrich the perspectives of Lakeway residents by delivering thought-provoking and informational speaker programs in the areas of science, technology, history, business, current events and the arts in an entertaining and socially engaging atmosphere.”

Leading off Oct. 19 will be Laura Huffman, who is state director for the Nature Conservancy of Texas.  Huffman was assistant city manager for the city of Austin from 2002 to 2008.  She will speak to the title “Protecting Natural Resources – Why Now?”

On Nov. 16, Ted Galan Carpenter will speak to the title “The Foreign Policy Wisdom of the Founders: Still Valid in the 21st Century.”  Carpenter is vice president for defense and foreign policy studies at the Cato Institute.  He is the author of seven and the editor of 10 books on international affairs.

Tracy Dahlby, chair of U.T.’s school of journalism, will speak Jan. 18, 2015, to the title “Reporting the World, up close and personal – Why it’s becoming a lost art.” Dahlby joined the U.T. – Austin faculty as chair of journalism after three decades mainly spent as a journalist specializing in international affairs.  Dahlby spent 13 years living in Asia, where he served as Tokyo bureau chief for The Washington Post and Newsweek magazine.  Since coming to U.T. Dahlby has developed Reporting China, A Foreign Correspondent’s Workshop, a field course that as acquainted students with the day-to-day realities of international reporting in a big, complex and fast-evolving beat – The People’s Republic of China.

On Feb. 15 Dr. Clay Johnson, Dean of the Dell Medical School at U.T., will speak on “Dell Medical School: Vision and Progress.” Dr. Johnson is a practicing neurologist who specializes in preventing and treating stroke.  He earned a medical degree from Harvard and a Ph.D in epidemiology at the University of California, Berkeley. During his 20 years at UCSF, he rose the academic ranks to Professor of Neurology and Epidemiology, and directed the Stroke Service.  In particular, he has published extensively in the prevention and treatment of stroke and transient ischemic attack.

Professor Lucas A. Powe, who is Professor, School of Law at U.T., will speak March 15.  Powe is a former law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas.  He has been at U.T. since 1971.  Powe is the author of four books, two on the regulation of broadcasting, one on the print media, and one on the history of the Warren Court (1953 – 69).  Powe will speak to the title “The Roberts Court – Highlights of the major decisions of the Supreme Court over the past five years.”

This popular series includes five catered dinners; the caterers this year will be Tony C’s, Verde’s, Chisos, Little Greek and The League. The cost of the Viewpoints series is $85 per person for Lakeway Activity Center members, and $100 per person for non-members.  Tickets are available at the Lakeway Activity Center. Pat Jacobsen and Allan Hitchcock founded the dinner-speaker series 15 years ago, and it has grown in popularity each year.  Jean Hennagin chaired the speakers committee this year, and other members of the committee are Tom Cain, Jerry Cooper, Allan Hitchcock, Sue Knolle and Fred Hazen.

LTlov’s 5th Annual School Supplies Drive was a great success and will provide the necessary tools to help socio-economically disadvantaged LTISD students succeed in the 2014-2015 school year. The Lake Travis community came together once again with record-setting donations. LTlov would like to thank every one who donated supplies and the businesses who promoted and collected supplies including Kuper Sotheby’s, pictured here with Katy Laswell and their overflowing bin. Special thanks to Bee Creek Methodist Church who provided approximately 100 back packs, each with a complete set of grade specific supplies.

AKA Vocal Show Group“An Evening on Broadway”

Load up the “Fancy wine and chow” and bring them, along with your cousins, mother, brother and theater loving chums, to the Lakeway Activity Center on Sept. 26th  and, or 27th as The AKA Vocal Show Group performs Broadway Hits from your favorite musicals. You may have seen most of the members in the Lakeway Sing A Long group or Lakeway Players performances.  You ALSO KNOW them AS (AKA…get it?)  Linda Bradshaw, Barbara Calderaro, Boyd Lawrence, Cathy Rose, Mark King, and Theresa Lingren. They have played from Georgetown, to Snyder, from Marble Falls to Leander, and for the last two years at the Lakeway Activity Center.  Let’s welcome them back this September as they perform “If My Friends Could See Me Now”, “Steam Heat”, “Opening Night”, and “Avenue Q” among other favorites.  The music from plays such as Chicago, Chorus Line, Grease, Les Miserables, and Wicked will bring back fond memories of your ventures into the culture of musical theater.  The show starts at 7:30, with the doors opening at 6:30, allowing plenty of time for pre-show lubrication, er….preparation!  Tickets go on sale to the general public on Sept. 8th, and are $15 for reserved seating.  Call the LAC at 512-261-1010 to purchase tickets; a group of 10 reserves an entire table! Setups will be provided, so bring your own favorite beverages, and set a “Broadway Flair”, perhaps with Champs and Caviar? Come support your fellow Lakeway performers, and you’ll agree that the AKA Vocal Show Group is Also Known As Fantastic and Fun!

Activity Center Exhibit Highlights Native American Culture

The Native American collection of Lakeway resident Russ Block will be on display through Oct. 10 at Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek.

During a 40-year career in aerospace engineering, Block developed an engrossing interest in the history, culture and spiritual beliefs of Native Americans.

In addition to attending thousands of Native American powwows and taking courses in Native American studies, he and his twin brother made numerous visits to the homelands of many of the Plains tribes in South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska and Colorado.

Block has participated in many “Sweat Lodge” ceremonies, visited numerous sacred Native American sites and explored all the major Indian War battlegrounds throughout what was known 150 years ago as The Indian Territories.

Over three decades, Block has amassed an eclectic collection of Native American cultural material items and spiritual tools used by medicine men and shamans.

He has used his hobby and this collection to augment lectures and presentations to middle school children and senior citizens about the history and life ways of our Native American ancestors.

Block also has been an officer of several Native American organizations and clubs and vice president of the Orange County Chapter of the Archaeology Institute of America.

He and his wife, Sue, moved to Lakeway three years ago from California to be close to Sue’s daughter, Sheryl, and their three teenage granddaughters.

For information, call Lakeway Activity Center at 512-261-1010 or visit www.lakeway-tx.gov.
