Neighborhoods throughout Lakeway are invited to join with hundreds of communities statewide on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 to participate in the 28th Annual 'National Night Out'. Lakeway officers and fire fighters will be attending neighborhood parties throughout the Lakeway community.

'NATIONAL NIGHT OUT' IS DESIGNED TO: • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness • Generate support and participation in crime efforts • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community relations • Send the message that your neighborhood is a safe place to live

'National Night Out' is a great opportunity for citizens, law enforcement and other public safety officials to join forces. Events are planned to promote crime prevention and drug prevention awareness and to strengthen the police - community partnership. We encourage neighborhoods to come together and send the message that we are all working together to prevent crime and keep our neighborhoods safe. On October 4, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., residents are asked to turn on their porch lights, lock their doors and spend the evening outside with their neighbors, police officers, and fire fighters.

Events in the past have included cookouts, block parties, parades, flashlight walks, contests, and youth activities. You are limited only by your imagination.

For the past 14 years, Texas had led the nation in citizen and police involvement. Your participation in the Lakeway area 'National Night Out' will show neighborhood strength, increase the police officer/citizen bond and help to make our community a safer place to live.

BALCONES COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA

RETURNS TO LAKEWAY On Sunday, October 23, from 4 to 5 p.m., the Balcones Community Orchestra will perform at the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek, in Lakeway. They were a big hit when performing here last April. This fine symphonic orchestra is in its fourteenth season of bringing high-quality music to the Austin region. The all-volunteer group draws its repertoire from the masterworks for small orchestra, and presents free concerts in venues that approximate the conditions under which these works were first performed and heard. Dr. Robert Radmer is the orchestra’s director. He has served on the music faculties of Texas State University and the College of Saint Scholastica, Eastern New Mexico University. He currently is the Orchestra Director for St. Edwards University. The guest soloist for this performance will be Pianist Toby Blumenthal Phillips. She has appeared as soloist with many ensembles, including the Chicago and

Houston Symphony Orchestras. A native of Chicago, she is a graduate of Northwestern University School of Music, and the University of Houston (graduate studies), and has completed post-graduate studies with Leonard Shure at the University of Texas. She is a Steinway artist. The program will feature the Piano Concerto No. 14 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He completed it in February 1784 as a piano concerto in E-flat major, catalogued with K.449. It is regarded as being the first of the mature series of concertos Mozart wrote, and indeed, commentators such as Girdlestone and Hutchings valued it as one of the best, particularly as all three movements are of the highest standard. This concert is being produced by the City of Lakeway’s Arts & Beautification Committee. It is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted by the orchestra.SUBMITTED BY: FRED NEWTON

Lake Travis Community Library offers four special spooky events in October. Do you want to perform science experiments to solve Halloween mysteries? Is it time to dress up in your pirate costume and trick-or-treat your way to lots of candy? Do you want to hear spooky stories for all ages? Or, perhaps you want to meet award-winning science fiction, fantasy, and horror author Lisa Tuttle? It all happens at the library!

The Silver Bough author Lisa Tuttle will speak at the library on Monday, October 17th at 7 p.m. Born and raised in Houston, Tuttle won the John W. Campbell Award

for Best New Writer in 1974. She lived in Austin from 1974-1980, working for the Austin American-Statesman as a staff writer and as that newspaper’s first television editor, writing daily reviews and regular features. In 1979 she decided to set out on the precarious path of the full-time free-lance writer, and went to live in England in 1981. Lisa’s first full-length book was a science fiction novel written in collaboration with George R. R. Martin: Windhaven (1981). After that she wrote Familiar Spirit, a horror story set in a spooky old house in Austin. Her other novels include Gabriel, Lost Futures (short-listed for the Arthur C. Clarke Award), The Pillow Friend (described by Neil Gaiman as “a nightmarish distaff monkey’s paw of a book that it’s impossible to forget”), The Mysteries, and, most recently, The Silver Bough. Ghost stories were her first love, and short fiction of the strange and supernatural variety continues to be her favorite form.

Lakeway MUD Stage 2 Water Restrictions

Due to dangerously low lake levels, extreme drought conditions, and high water use, in accordance with the Lakeway Municipal Utility District Drought Contingency Plan… Lakeway MUD is now in Stage 2 drought conditions effective immediately. You are still allowed to irrigate two days a week, with a few more restrictions listed below. No Irrigating is allowed between the hours of 10:00am and 7:00pm. (Example, you may irrigate from 12:01 am until 10:00 am on your day and again from 7:00 pm until 11:59 pm on your same day.)

SYNOPSIS: The worst dust storm in a decade is about to hit the town¸ and all the men have gone to drive the horses and cattle to safer shelter to ride out the dust, leaving the women of the town to fend for themselves in the only building strong enough to withstand the pounding sand – the town brothel. So, four ‘ladies of the night’ and three ‘ladies of the…ah…day’ are thrown together along with a mysterious cowboy who rides out of the wind. LAKEWAY CITY HALL ART GALLERYLinda Wells’ Long Hot Summer ExhibitSeptember 20th – October 25th, 2011

The artwork of Linda Wells will be on display at the Lakeway City Hall Art Gallery September 20th through October 25th, 2011. The exhibit may be viewed during regular City Hall office hours Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The Art Gallery is located off the lobby of City Hall at 1102 Lohmans Crossing. Linda is a longtime Lakeway resident, having lived here with husband Fred since 1990. Several of her paintings of the Lakeway area will be featured in the upcoming book by Lew Carlson, “Lakeway: Hill Country Community”, a history of our area. A love of nature’s beauty is what inspires her to paint. The subtle colors and light of winter or the vibrant screaming reds of autumn are a thrill to her. She seems to see things a little different from “normal” people and Linda takes it to another level. This year, Linda is feeling somewhat uninspired by our sun-baked landscapes, “I am discovering during this incredible drought and heat that all of my paintings have water in them. I am refusing to paint dead grass. And the only painting I did without water has a misty

blue mountain in the background. Several of the artists I paint with have felt like they are slipping into a depression because of lack of energy to paint, but I think it is just this never ending heat. Someday it will rain again and cool down to 70 degrees and all will be well.” Though Wells spent almost 25 years as an artist and illustrator, nine of those at the Texas Parks and Wildlife department, she only strayed from Texas for three years while in the Marine Corps. And while Laguna Beach, Ca. was a tempting place to settle after leaving the service, Texas drew her home. Although versatile and skilled in most media, oils and pastels are her favorites. You can see more of Linda’s work at the annual Bunkhouse Gallery Show in March, the Austin Pastel Societies Annual Juried Member Exhibition (she took 3rd best in show this March), and by appointment in her home/studio overlooking Lake Travis in Lakeway.

LTHS GOLF TEAM ANNOUNCES ITS ANNUAL FUNDRAISER

THE CAV SCRAMBLE The LTHS Golf Team is a team of champions! The Boys Team won its 2nd State Championship in 2011. The Boys have won 11 straight District Championships and have gone to the State Championship 8 of the past 11 years! The Girls also boast an impressive record with a 2nd place finish at the State Championship in 2011 and they have won 9 straight District and 9 straight Regional Championships! Both teams need your support at their only fundraiser of the year, the Cav Scramble. Your participation in the Cav Scramble is an excellent opportunity to support our dedicated student athlete golfers in their pursuit of another state championship. Funds raised at the Cav Scramble are the only source of revenue to fund the tournament fees, equipment fees, lodging and meals for our student golfers. Continued and consistent participation by our golfers in various golf tournaments competing with other schools and districts prepares them for the competitive level of play at the state championship and at future college events. District Begins November Bond Election Community Presentations

Lake Travis Independent School District (LTISD) officials have kicked off a series of community presentations to provide voters with information about the November bond election. In May, a 27-member citizens’ advisory committee comprised of men and women representing each elementary and secondary school attendance zone recommended to the LTISD Board of Trustees that a $158.5 million bond package be brought before District voters. Two weeks later, in a unanimous 7-0 vote, the Board approved an order calling a bond election to be held November 8, 2011. The 2011 bond program components, as recommended by the advisory committee, include the following:

If approved by voters, the estimated tax increase related to the bond would be $0.0924 for a total tax rate of $1.4083 per $100 of assessed property valuation. The 2011-2012 anticipated average market value of a residence in Lake Travis ISD is approximately $380,000. After the District’s 20% Optional Homestead Exemption and the State’s $15,000 Mandated Exemption, passage of the bond election would represent an increase of approximately $281.88 annually—or $23.49 monthly—for the average homeowner. Residents who have received an Over-65 Exemption or ‘freeze’ from the Travis County Appraisal District will incur no tax impact as a result of the approved bond election. District officials have scheduled approximately 40 bond presentations to date, including a community meeting scheduled for 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 5 at the Lake Travis High School Performing Arts Center. The Lake Travis Republican Club members will welcome Texas Representative Paul Workman to their Tuesday, October 18th Lunch meeting.

Paul D. Workman was elected as Republican in November 2010 to serve Texas District 47 of the State Legislature. District 47 which includes south and southwest sections of Travis County. Representative Workman is a member of the House Committee on Business and Industry and on the Committee on Corrections. In addition, he serves on the Energy Council which helps facilitate the development of a national energy matters among the Southwestern States. Paul Workman has been active in the local construction of commercial buildings for more than 37 years. He earned a BS in Building Construction from Texas A&M University in 1973. He served in the US Army Reserve for 10 years as an Engineering Officer, retiring as Company Commander with the rank of Captain.

Representative Workman is an active Rotarian serving as President of the Rotary Club of Austin in 1998. He is a National Director of the Associated General Contractors of America and serves on the board of Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse. Paul has been married to the former Sherry Cleveland for 40 years.They have two grown children, Kyle and Paula, who now own and work in the family business. Paul and Sherry are active members of the Pedernales River Fellowship and enjoy spending time with their six grandchildren.
