History detective looks into ‘oldest’ chair in America

Textile conservator Michele Pagan will present her research into what one furniture expert thought might be the oldest known wing back chair in the nation at a meeting of the Middletown Springs Historical Society on Sunday, Aug. 12, at 2 p.m.

The chair was in the collection in the Shelburne Museum, which commissioned Pagan to look into the history of the chair after an expert suggested it might be uniquely old. She presented her research to an international museum conference in Poland and will bring that same presen-tation to Middletown Springs. Pagan, a Vermont native, has worked for the State Department, Colonial Williamsburg, the Smithsonian and others.

The Historical Society build-ing is on the Green at the junction of routes 133 South and 140 West. The museum is open Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m.

For more information, call 802-235-2376.

Moonlighters up next in Fair Haven Park

Pine Street Jazz closes Castleton summer concerts

The Moonlighters, a Vermont-based big band, will take the Fair Haven stage at 7 p.m. on Aug. 16, on the town green.

The Moonlighters consist of 15 to 16 members and have been performing together since 1994. The group is a popular choice at concert venues throughout Vermont and eastern New York.

Led by Jan Hewes, the band is well known for bringing back the Great American Songbook of the 1940s and 1950s and weav-ing in the popular music of later decades. Spectators will hear the music of Glenn Miller, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Duke Ellington and many oth-ers.

A typical concert features a couple of trombones, half a

dozen saxophones, clarinets, a bass guitar, keyboard and drum-mers. There are usually two to three vocalists who lend their voices to each performance as well.

The band is based in Hartland.

The Fair Haven Concert in the Park series is quickly draw-ing to a close. TS Ensemble will perform the final concert of the series at 7 p.m. on Aug. 23. That performance will also be the final time spectators can enjoy free ice cream.

A door prize and a 50/50 raf-fle will be offered at each show. Admission to the concerts is free and spectators are encour-aged to bring their own chairs.

In the event of inclement weather, concerts will be held in the Fair Haven Baptist church.

Pine Street Jazz brings the great sounds of “smooth blues and hot jazz” to close out the Castleton State College summer concert series on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at 7 p.m., with guest vocal-ist Taryn Noelle. The show is free, on the Old Chapel Green, with rain site in the Casella Theater in the Fine Arts Center. For further information, please call (802) 273-2911.

Through the combined efforts of these Auxiliary Units, $4,000 was raised to support the baseball team.

made burdock sculptures of ballerinas, chickens and “Champ.” There has even been burdock clothing and a mohawk made entirely of the clingy thistle.

Sculptures can be entered into a contest and are evaluated by a panel of judges. Awards are given for the tallest, most creative and most theme-related burdocks.

Gina Cull, who helps organize the event, said last year’s contest drew nearly a dozen sculptures and she is hoping for even more this year.

Anyone who would like to enter a sculpture must have it at the town offices by 9 a.m. on Sunday. The sculptures will remain there for everyone to enjoy throughout the day.

Almost as creative as the sculp-tures are the floats that march in the parade each year.

Residents combine their cre-ative talents to designs floats that combine two elements: the burdock and the parade theme, which for this year is “Welcome

to the Circus.”Of course, the parade will also

feature custom vehicles, local dig-nitaries, and children are wel-come to march as well.

“The parade is one of the most popular parts of the event. It’s growing ever year,” said Cull.

The procession will step off at 10 a.m.

Following the parade, many residents will make their way over to the Benson Fire Department’s barbecue. The bar-becue will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will include a variety of food.

Other activities include a tag sale at the church from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., a library sale, where burdock T-shirts can be purchased, from 9 to 1:30 p.m., and a magic show near the town hall at 1 a.m.

The Adirondack Drill Team will perform at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. at Kellog’s Green and carnival games and a bouncy house will open at 10:30 a.m. and continue throughout the day.

This year’s event will also fea-ture more music that it has in the past. “That’s the one thing that is different. We usually have one musical act, but this year we have two,” Cull said.

Emily Billado, a student at Fair Haven Union High School, will perform during the morning, following the parade, and local band Bootleg will play near the town office beginning at 3 p.m.

The Benson Museum will also be open with an interactive exhib-it on butter churning as well as a storyteller.

Admission to the Burdock Festival and Family Day is free.

Castleton Colonial Day House TourVisit Castleton on Colonial

Day, Saturday, Aug. 18, and join “The Blue Cat of Castleton” as he walks through the town in search of The River’s Song. Relive the enchantment of visiting pri-vate homes, historic sites and public buildings of a time gone by.

Meet docents in period cos-tumes and learn of the blue cat’s adventures. View out-standing architecture such as the beautifully carved pulpit often described as builder Thomas Royal Dake’s archi-tectural masterpiece at the Castleton Federated Church.

The Higley House, home of the Castleton Historical Society, will be open and visi-tors can tour the exhibits, antique tools, carriage collec-tion and period costume and hat displays. On display at the Higley House will be the Blue Cat Quilt depicting historic landmarks in town and high-lights from the book “The Blue Cat of Castleton.” The quilt was entirely hand-sewn and hand-quilted with over 375 hours spent in creating the unique pattern of quilting stitches.

The tour includes over a dozen sites throughout the

village including outstanding period homes, public build-ings, galleries and historic

sites. Demonstrations of chair caning, weaving and quilting will be found in homes along the tour.

Additional activities planned for Colonial Day include a reenactment of “a day in camp” by members of the 53rd Regiment of Foot in America. Soldiers will be prac-ticing drills and women will be cooking, baking and making butter.

The Federated Church will host a ham dinner at 5 p.m. with assorted salads, bever-age and dessert.

The Castleton Library will also host a book sale at the church, including all their lat-est donations, and an ice cream social, from 1 to 4 p.m. Come for ice cream, live music by Robert Wuagneux, and hun-dreds of books.

Tickets can be purchased on Colonial Day at two loca-tions on Main Street: the Castleton Federated Church, and the Langdon Hitchcock House.

Tickets are $20 and $18 for seniors 62 and older. The Federated Church dinner is $9 adults, $6 children ages 12 and under. For additional infor-mation call 802-468-5691.

Fundraising dinner needs volunteersBarbara Pauquette is living

in a makeshift home in her shed beside the brook on Fennel Hollow Road in Poultney, Vt., since her home burned down in early sum-mer. She draws water from the brook for her domestic needs and has no kitchen or bath-room facility. She is looking for work and has very limited means to support herself.

A fundraiser will be held on Barbara’s behalf on Aug. 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. It will be a spaghetti dinner in the fellow-ship hall of Poultney United Methodist Church – 108 Main St., Poultney, for the specific purpose of providing Barbara with some temporary assis-tance and relief. The site is handicap accessible. Kathy

Hutson will be chef extraordi-naire.

The Poultney Area Community Emergency Relief Fund is asking for “extrava-gant generosity and able assistance.” Volunteers are needed for service – set-up, serving the meal and clean-up, as well as financial contri-butions.

Poultney United Methodist Church invites everyone to

come and eat and enjoy the conversation. As you depart to your evening’s activities and home, the church will invite you to offer your free-will contribution toward Barbara’s relief.

For more information and to offer your helping hands, please contact Pastor David of the Poultney United Methodist Church at 802-287-4406.

Demonstrations of chair can-ing, above, weaving and quilt-ing will be found in homes along the tour on Castleton Colonial Day, Saturday, Aug. 18.

Cremation With A Service...The importance of memorializing the life of a loved one is beyond description. Loved ones need the gathering and support of others

who share their sorrow and mourn the loss. A healthy way of saying good-bye. Cremations today are frequently accompanied by a service

that memorializes a person in a unique way.

Castleton ready for school

Castleton schools are getting ready to welcome students back on Wednesday, Aug. 29, when the sixth-graders return for ori-entation at Castleton Village School and for grades K-5 at Castleton Elementary School. Seventh- and eighth-graders have orientation on Aug. 30 at CVS.

School starts at 8:20 a.m. at CVS and at 8:30 at the elemen-tary school.

Registration for new K-8 stu-dents will take place at the ele-mentary school on Friday, Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring your child’s birth certificate, immunization records and if possible a copy of their most recent report card. Call 802-468-5624, ext. 3200 for more informa-tion.

For general inquiries, call CES at 802-468-5624 or CVS at 802-468-2203.

Fair Haven welcomes new studentsInfo meeting for Poultney fall sports

There will be a meeting this Sunday, Aug. 12, in the Poultney High Library at 6 p.m. for all parents and athletes to begin the fall 2012-13 athletic seasons. All athletes must have paper-work, such as contracts, physi-cals, insurance and emergency information filled out in full and turned in before they can practice. Practices will begin on Aug. 13 for high school football and cheerleading, Aug. 16 for varsity girls soccer and Aug. 29 for seventh- and eighth-grade football, cheerleading and co-ed soccer.

Registration for new students at Fair Haven Grade School will be held Aug. 14, 15 and 16 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. This registration is for new students only, in kinder-garten through grade 8 for the school year 2012-2013. Those reg-istering are asked to bring birth

certificates and immunization records with them.

Contact Terri Demasi or Suzan Langmaid, school secre-taries, at 802-265-3883 for more information.

School opens Wednesday, Aug. 29 at 8:10 a.m.

For many student athletes the fall sports season at Fair Haven Union High School will begin next week.

The Slaters football team will begin defense of their division II state football title on Monday, Aug. 13. Practices will be held beginning at 2 p.m. Monday through Friday (the locker room will be open at 1:30 p.m.). Monday and Wednesday will include a second session at 6 p.m. The time of Saturday’s practice has yet to be determined.

Field Hockey will practice from 8 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16 through Thursday, Aug. 23. There will be no practice on Sunday and Monday.

The boys soccer team will practice from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16 through Thursday, Aug. 23. The time of Saturday’s practice had yet to be determined and there will be no practice on Sunday.

Girls soccer will practice

from 7 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 16 and 17 and have conditioning drills from 3 to 5:30 p.m. The week of Aug. 20 they will practice from 3:15 to 5:30 p.m.

Cross-country will practice from 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 20 through Aug. 24. Athletes are to meet at the Blue Shed at Laplaca Field.

The cheerleading squad will practice from 8 to 11 a.m. on Aug. 13 and will meet at Heitkamp track.

Anyone who wishes to par-ticipate in athletics during the upcoming school year is reminded that up-to-date physi-cal exam is required. The Vermont Department of Health suggests that all students in Vermont receive an annual “Well Child” exam, which also serve as a sports physical.

It is the responsibility of the student athletes and their fami-lies to provide a copy of the physical exam before their first practice.

Slaters getting season startedAnnual Wells carnival to return next week

A Wells summer tradition returns to the grounds of the Modern Woodman of America as the community gears up for its annual car-nival.

The carnival has been held for 74 or 75 years, depending on whom you ask, and is one of the final community events of the summer. The event benefits the MWA and its endeavors in the community, including scholarships for local stu-dents.

The event will be held from Wednesday, Aug. 15, through Saturday, Aug. 18, and will feature a parade, antique tractor pull, live entertainment, games, rides and food.

Live music will highlight the entertainment each night. The Red Hot Riders will perform on Wednesday; Street Talk on Thursday, Freedom Hawk on Friday; and Sweetwater on Saturday.

There will also be bingo each night except Thursday, as well as an assortment of other carnival games, and children will be able to enjoy several amusement rides. A $20 wristband will be avail-able each night and provides unlimited access to the rides.

There will be a variety of food, from homemade french fries to fried dough, avail-able all four days. And the event has traditionally fea-tured a cake booth featuring homemade sweets from skilled bakers throughout the Lakes Region.

The most excited day of the carnival, and the most action packed, is Saturday.

The day will begin at 10 a.m. with an antique tractor pull and will lead into the parade which begins at 1 p.m.

Local volunteer organiza-tions, community groups, and citizens will march in the parade. Cash prizes will be awarded for the best floats, cars, and best overall appearance.

Saturday will also fea-tures a bike giveaway and one lucky girl and boy will walk home with a brand-new bicycle.

Admission to the fair is free and the event is held rain or shine. The carnival will open at 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and following the parade on Saturday.
