Lake Munmorah Public School Newsletter Page 1 Thursday 5th May 2016 Principals Report Cross Country The weather was on our side for this event on Tuesday to see all of our Year 2-6 students do their very best to run their respective distances. There were many red faces and much huffing and puffing but all students tried very hard to complete the task in front of them. Despite a slight hiccup with the 10 and 11 year old race, great organisation lead to another successful and enjoyable cross country event. Well done to the students for their efforts and thank you to the parents who came along, it was great to see you there. Well done to staff and the sport committee. Mother’s Day Breakfast Tomorrow morning we will be holding a breakfast event to acknowledge and recognise the mothers of our school community. It is an opportunity for our students to not only honour one's own mother but to build an appreciation of motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in our society. Mothers certainly play an important and critical role in our school community and we would like to take the opportunity to show our appreciation for this. Brian Hilton Motor Group will once again be sponsoring our breakfast event for which we are most grateful and we thank them for this support. Camp Australia – Out of School Hours (OoSH) service commences Monday 16 May Camp Australia will commence this service on Monday 16 May – this being Week 4. A community information session was held by Camp Australia in the school library last Tuesday night and by the interest being shown it looks as though the program will be well utilised by our community. If you couldn’t come along and you do have intentions of utilising this program (either on a permanent or casual basis) please go to our school website and click on the Camp Australia link to obtain further information about the service. Ethics Program A note was sent home this week asking those families whose child is registered as non scripture to express an interest in the new Ethics program which will commence this term. It is important to note that while we will be conducting one class for each stage there will only be 22 students in each class. We currently have over 200 students registered for non-scripture. So the order of return of those expressions of interest will determine who will be offered a place in a class and who will be placed on a wait list. So if you are keen for your child/ren to be party of our Ethics program you must return the expression of interest ASAP to avoid disappointment. It is the case that we will continue to recruit volunteer teachers for the program and will conduct additional classes accordingly. If you are interested in becoming a teacher please approach the school office. National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2016 Good luck to our Years 3 and 5 students who will be undertaking NAPLAN testing during next week. Students will be undertaking testing in the areas of reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy. Teachers have the students well prepared these tests. Improvements to the School Site Our commitment to the upkeep of the school site, ensuring that it is physically appealing and safe for all that come into the grounds is always at the highest level. As indicated in this newsletter last week we are about to commence the work of air conditioning the school hall, constructing a new front gate and pathway for easier access to the OoSH program and installing

electronically controlled gating on the staff car park to increase access and security for the workers in the OoSH program. Additional to this we have all but completed the upgrade of the school technology room which has resulted in a contemporary 21

st century learning space

outfitted with state of the art equipment and furniture. As well, we are about to commence an upgrade of the pavement area outside the MC and EI classrooms by replacing the pavers with a concrete surface, this being the first part of an indigenous classroom and garden project in this area. Tree work has been ongoing with many hazardous trees removed or offending limbs pruned and the latest arborist report shows us to be in a good place in terms of safety from the trees on site. So all in all there are some great projects and initiatives happening that will serve to increase the amenity and safety of the site.

Parents as Teachers Program – Next Session 9:30 am Thursday 12 May The next session of the Parents as Teachers program will be held on Thursday next week. The topic for the next workshop will be “Parents Supporting the Development of Functional Reading at Home”. It will be delivered by Ms Narelle Batten who is the school’s reading recovery teacher. The support of reading development is always an area where parents seem unsure about how to do this correctly so please come along to learn about some simple and effective techniques that will definitely help your child. Even if your child is reading independently, Ms Batten will share ideas on how to improve their fluency and comprehension. Hopefully you can come along.

Bush Rock Available – Free to a Good Home The bush rock is about to be removed from the site. It is good quality stone of various sizes

which would be great for garden edging or stone walling and it will be a pity to send it to waste.

However, if it is not required by anyone we need to remove it. If you would like to take some (or

all) of the rock please just contact the office and we can give you access to collect what you may

need. Please be quick.

Cross Country Carnival

Tuesday saw a very successful Cross Country Carnival. We would like to thank all children for their participation and strong efforts. The track was long and we witnessed great competition and determination. Huge congratulations to all children that took part. Due to a misunderstanding of lap counts, all 11 year children interested in competing will race again on Friday (6th) afternoon. This will make all of the results fair. Once these results have been collated, the top 4 from each year group (8/9, 10, 11, 12/13) will all be announced in week 3 to represent the school at Zone. The Zone Cross Country is fast approaching. The day is going to run as it has in past years with a possible slight variation to the track. It is on Friday 20th May 2016 at Wyong race track. 8-10's run 2km while the seniors run 3km.

MOTHER’S DAY NEWS

P & C Mother’s Day STALL Due to problems with our supplier and popularity (thank you), the P & C

have had to source more stock for the P & C Mother’s Day stall that was

scheduled for today. With apologies, the P & C Mother’s Day stall will now

be held on Friday 6th May (after the Mother’s Day Breakfast).

If your child bought $5 to school today for the stall, their teacher is

minding it until tomorrow. The good news is that if you would like your

child to purchase a Mother’s Day gift, they can bring their $5.00

tomorrow and visit the stall.

The Mother’s Day Raffle will be drawn at the conclusion of the Mother’s

Day Breakfast.

Many thanks,

The P & C Committee.

Mother’s Day BREAKFAST

The Mother’s Day Breakfast will be held tomorrow, Friday 6th May from

8.00am (or a bit earlier if you are ready!) We will be serving pancakes,

The top gates will be closed in the morning, so please enter the school via

the main gate (near the school office). All adult visitors will be given a

lucky door prize ticket. Prizes will be drawn at the conclusion of the

Breakfast.

The canteen will be open and all items will be available. Additionally,

flavoured milks, juice poppers, and bottles of water will also be available

at Canteen Menu prices.

We have had a wonderful response and are looking forward to seeing lots

of Lovely Ladies tomorrow morning.

Gold coin donations will be gratefully accepted on the day.
