National Secondary Schools Computer Fund (2010 – 2013) $419 million in funding to help Queensland Government schools achieve a 1:1
student to computer ratio in grades 9 – 12.

The BYOx Technical Solution
School installs a special $30 000 switch that: is secure
allows safe connection to internet with content filtering
enables access to network drives and printing
eliminates risks of file sharing over the school network
Students with personal devices join the school BYOx network once-off through an “On-Boarding” process, then use student username and password to connect
Connection can be broken for various reasons and will then need to re-join to BYOx network
Students with school devices connect to the school network using student username and password to connect

Bring Your Own Device (BYOx)
Available to all students, however not required for Year 7 students
Charge approximately $50 annually to connect to the school BYOx network Network licence ($16), ADOBE software ($12) & Tech Support ($22).
Devices must meet minimum specifications and may or may not include the full range of devices (eg IPADs, phones etc.)
Able to connect up to 3 devices on one student connection licence
Microsoft Office can be installed free on student or staff personal devices
Must have up to date virus protection
Support for parents to purchase of devices (school portals, minimum standards,)
Supporting Parents to Buy BYOx Devices
School cannot purchase and on-sell to parents
School must be fair to individual companies when providing parents with information to purchase devices

School Take Home Hire Program
300 available ACER devices with most out of warranty at end of 2015
Most laptops should last until the end of 2016 before disposal
However some students complain about the condition of these devices
First priority for Year 12 students
Will need to sign School Take Home Agreement Form
Need to reserve some spares laptops to use for parts or replace broken devices not worth fixing when out of warranty
Possible charge of $120 - $150 with possible fee structure for damage/repair (TBA)
There is no plan for an AT SCHOOL HIRE SCHEME
School Take Home EQUITY Program
Provide a take home computer at a significantly reduced cost of $40 - $50 per year (about 1/3 of regular Take Home Program fees)
Possible fee structure for damage/repair (TBA)
A limited number of these devices will be available
Will need to sign School Take Home Agreement Form
Suitable for families that cannot afford other schemes and/or multiple student families
Need to determine process for parents to apply for an EQUITY device and be prioritised for this scheme
School plans to have EQUITY devices available for up to 10% of students per year

Loan machine for students who need to repair their personal device
Loans for a limited time only (eg 2 weeks)

Financial Implications for Parent
Working Party’s current financial modelling suggests the following approximate costs associated with school IT
This will be dependant upon gaining greater clarity of how many students will BYOx and require EQUITY devices

This bunch of photo, web and video editing software packages is beneficial for all students
Software costs $600/year for a regular version or $180/year for student version
$22 / year in contribution to IT Technician costs
This purchases 33 minutes of IT Technician time per year at $40 per hour
Enables support to connect, reconnect and undertake basic trouble shooting

Increase in General School Fees
In comparison to other high schools in the broad Lockyer Valley / Toowoomba and Ipswich region,
Laidley SHS is in the lower band of socio-economic status (ICSEA Score)
Laidley SHS uses a user pays system based on subject choices rather than everyone paying more for subject fees whether you do a resource intensive subject or not.
Laidley SHS has the cheapest base school fees (by $30 - $180 per year)
Laidley SHS charges the least for NSSCF Take Home Scheme (by $30 - $60 per year)
Laidley SHS has the cheapest Visual Arts fee (by $25 to $40 per year)
Laidley SHS charges only $20 more for Hospitality however we provide all ingredients (including meat, veges, fruit etc.) whereas other schools require students to bring main ingredients to school.
Laidley SHS has one of the cheapest Furnishing fees (by $25 to $40 per year) excluding Harristown SHS whose base fee for every child is $53 higher than our base fee.

This included School Fee ($90), Internet ($15) and Printing ($5)

This represents an increase of only 1.75% per year over 10 years compared to CPI increase of 3.10% over the same time.
If 3.10% CPI increases were made annually over last 10 years, school fees would have been $150 / year in 2015.
