    Battleforthe Causeway

Te German attack on the thinly-held La

Fire Causeway came rom the west, spear-headed by the tanks o the 100. PanzerAusbildungs und Ersatz Abteilung.

Te American paratroopers were orcedback to the western edge o the MerderetRiver, rom which they launched severalattacks to secure the bridge.

On D Minus One the men o the US 82ndAll American Airborne Division jumpedinto to Normandy with the mission ohalting German reinorcements rom

reaching Utah Beach. Te divisions twomain drop zones were positioned aroundthe French town o Sainte Marie Eglisein two large open areas. Te MerderetRiver divided these two areas and thusbecame the rst objective o the 82nd inorder to consolidate their position.

During the drop, the shaken pilots othe paratroopers C-47 transport planesdropped the soldiers all across theCotentin Penninsula, resulting in massconusion. Still, the men knew what had

to be done, having studied the sand tablesand maps thoroughly back in England.

Elements o the 507th Parachute InantryRegiment converged on the bridge during the night o5/6 June and established a rough perimeter.

At 1400 hours on 6 June, the Germans attacked in orcewith the 1067th Grenadier Regiment supported by the 100.Panzer Ausbildungs und Ersatz Abteilung, a tank training andreplacement battalion.

Te grenadiers advanced with the old French training tanks. As they approached the bridge, the tanks stopped in ront

o the small mineeld deployed by the paratroopers. As theinantry moved to clear the mines, the paratroopers openedre, causing casualties and orcing the tanks to pull back.

Once they regrouped, a handul o H-39 tanks advancedslowly toward the bridge. Suddenly, the rst was knocked

out by two careully hidden bazooka teams. Nevertheless theGermans pressed the attack and orced the paratroopers backto the eastern side o the bridge.

Te Germans halted at the river, unable to advance throughthe now heavily-deended western bank. A stalemate devel-oped as the two sides struggled to gather enough strength topush the other back.

Eventually the paratroopers managed to push Germans backthanks to timely arrival o their glider-borne regiment as

well as several Sherman tanks which had arrived rom UtahBeach.

Unable to repel repower o that magnitude, the Beutepanzers withdrew and the bridge nally ell into the hands o theAmericans on 9 June.
