Two Sing Praises of Polytec Learning

Two government polytechnic graduates have proven critics wrong by going far in their careers.

Long seen as their poor cousin of university, polytechnic education was the choice of Zahrah Abd Wahab Fenner and Nazri Ab Razak after their SPM.

Polytechnic Ungku Omar Alumnus Zahrah credits her certificate in business studies as a catalyst for her career development. She is now the deputy CEO of the Companies Commission of Malaysia.

She says it was in the polytechnic between 1977 and 79 that she learned how to be self-reliant as the student had to search for additional study materials independently.

I was used to being spoon-fed in school and the polytechnic just opened my eyes on how to do things on my own, like conducting research.

She says students also did case studies, which broadened their minds on various subjects.

So, I committed myself to studying hard. I also took part in sport activities and was active in hockey.

Zahrah says one of the most important components of the course was a six-month practical training stint before students were awarded their certificates.

This had exposed her to working environment which prepared her to adapt to her job later.

After the polytechnic, she enrolled into Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia where she graduated with an honours degree in accounting.

She started her career with the Custom Department for eight years followed by a three year stint at Wisma.

With the setting up of the Companies Commission of Malaysia, she was appointed its deputy chief executive officer at age 43.

If it had not been for the polytechnic, I would have no idea where my career was headed.

Another successful alumnus is Nazri, 35, who obtained his certificate in building services engineering from Politeknik Kuching in 1994.

Now a certified engineer, he has three companies under his watch, dealing with engineering consultancy services, manufacturing and construction projects.

After his polytechnic education, he worked briefly as a draughtsman before earning a scholarship from the Sabah government to do a degree in building services engineering in the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom.

In 2003, Nazri obtained his master s in business administration and added an executive diploma in occupational safety and health in 2007.

There are people who will just dismiss a polytechnic education. They are missing out on the fact that it provides good training.

Polytechnic education will celebrate its 40th anniversary at the Politeknik Ungku Omar in Ipoh on Aug 17. H8 EDUCATION - New Sunday Times, April 12, 2009
