Disassembly/Reassembly
Description
This section demonstrates disassembly procedures for all field
replaceable units (FRUs) and then addresses the specific issues
relevant to reassembly of the CLARiiON CX600 xPE and DAE.
Objectives
The following are the objectives for this exercise:
Disassemble a CLARiiON CX600 xPE and DAE to the FRU level.
Recognize the FRUs for a CLARiiON CX600 xPE and DAE and identify
FRU replacement dependencies. Completely reassemble a CLARiiON
CX600 xPE and DAE to the point of ready to power
up.Tools/Aids/Materials
The following tools/aids/materials are required to disassemble
and re-assemble Fibre Channel Disk Enclosures.
CLARiiON CX600 xPE and DAE #1 Philips Screwdriver ESD Wrist
StrapDisassembly of CX600 SPE
The procedures for removing each FRU are contained in a separate
table. Component removal dependencies and a list of applicable
enclosures can be found at the beginning of each table.
List of Field Replaceable Units
The CLARiiON CX600 SPE includes the following FRUs:
FRUDescription
Front BezelFront cover of the CX600 chassis.
Power SupplyCoverts AC power to DC and supplies power to the
electronics and disks within the enclosure.
Storage ProcessorProcessor board for an xPE that provides RAID
processing, read cache, and write cache.
Storage Processor Fan PackMetal fan pack that cools the storage
processors.
Standby Power SourceProvides battery backup power to preserve
the write cache on a storage processor in the event of a loss of
supply power.
Removing the Front Bezel
Follow this procedure to remove the front bezel:
Removing the Front Bezel
1. Press in on the release buttons and pull the bezel away from
the chassis.
Removing the Power Supplies
Follow this procedure to remove the power supplies:
Removing the Power Supplies
2. Make sure the switch on the power supply is in the OFF
position, and wait five seconds before disconnecting the power
cable.
3. CAUTION: The orientation of the two power supplies is
different. Pay close attention when removing a power supply to make
sure that you orient it correctly when replacing it.
Release the retaining clip from the power cord and disconnect
the cord from the power supply.
4. Loosen the thumbscrew securing the power supply to the
chassis. Notice the securing mechanism is a latch (see arrow below)
and the screw only need be turned about 1 turn to free the power
supply. The icons beside the screw dictate the direction to turn
the screw.
5. Slide the power supply out of the chassis.
Removing the Storage Processors (SPs)
Follow this procedure to remove the storage processors:
Removing the Storage Processors
1. Disconnect all cables from the back of the SP, including the
Fibre Channel, terminal, and SPS cables.
2. CAUTION: The orientation of the two Storage Processors is
different. Pay close attention when removing a Storage Processor to
make sure that you orient it correctly when replacing it.
Loosen the two captive thumbscrews that secure the SP to the
chassis. This is the same latch type mechanism as on the power
supplies.
3. Carefully slide the storage processor out of the chassis.
Removing the Storage Processor Fan Pack
Follow this procedure to remove the storage processor fan
pack:
Removing the Storage Processor Fan Pack
1. The following procedures should be followed before
continuing:
Removing the Front Bezel
2. Grasp the two plastic locking levers as shown and squeeze the
levers towards each other.
3. CAUTION: The storage processor fan pack should be replaced
within two minutes if the enclosure is powered on and operational
or the storage processors will overheat and force a thermal
shutdown.
Press inward on the black plastic locking tabs, and use the
handles to pull the SP fan pack out of the enclosure.
Removing the Standby Power Sources
Follow this procedure to remove the standby power sources.
Removing the Standby Power Sources
1. Make sure the power switch on the SPS is in the off position.
Disconnect all of the cables from the SPS, including the RJ-11
serial cable and all power cables. Remove the four screws from each
mounting plate on the back of the SPS and remove the mounting
plates.
2. Pull forward to release the front bezel from the SPS rack
tray.
3. Remove the two screws that secure the front of the SPS.
4. CAUTION: Each SPS weighs approximately 20 pounds.Slide the
SPS outward from the rear of the rack.
Reassembly of CLARiiON CX600 xPE
Replacing each FRU follows the steps required to remove the FRU
in reverse order.
Disassembly of a CLARiiON CX600 DAE
This section covers the procedures necessary to remove and
replace parts in a CLARiiON CX600 DAE.
The procedures for removing each FRU are contained in a separate
table. Component removal dependencies and a list of applicable
enclosures can be found at the beginning of each table.
List of Field Replaceable Units
The CLARiiON CX600 DAE includes the following FRUs:
FRUDescription
Front BezelFront cover of the DAE chassis.
Disk ModuleFibre Channel hard disk drive mounted in a
carrier.
Link Control CardProvides an arbitrated loop for the disks
within the enclosure, and allows enclosures to be
daisy-chained.
Power SupplyConverts AC power to DC and supplies power to the
electronics and disks within the enclosure
Removing the Front Bezel
Follow this procedure to remove the front bezel:
Removing the Front Bezel
1. Press in on the release buttons.
3.Pull the bezel away from the chassis.
Removing the Disk Modules
Follow this procedure to remove the disk modules:
Removing the Disk Modules
1. CAUTION: A disk module should not be removed while power is
applied unless its amber Check LED is illuminated. When removing
multiple disk modules, wait several seconds between each removal
and verify that the active LEDs of the remaining modules are
flickering.
CAUTION: When removing multiple disk modules, make sure to
insert the modules into their original slots in the enclosure. If
the disk module is a member of a bound LUN, data on that LUN may be
inaccessible if the drive is replaced in a different slot.
Press the release latch on the drive carrier, and lift the latch
up to unlock the carrier from the chassis.
3.CAUTION: When reinstalling the disk module do not force the
module into the slot. Use the latch to fully seat the drive.
Slide the module out of the chassis.
Removing the Power Supplies
Follow this procedure to remove the disk modules:
Removing the Power Supplies
1. Loosen the captive thumbscrew securing the power supply to
the chassis.
3.Slide the power supply out of the chassis.
Removing the Link Control Cards
Follow this procedure to remove the link control cards:
Removing the Link Control Cards
1. Loosen the thumbscrew securing the link control card to the
chassis.
3.Slide the link control card out of the chassis.
Reassembly of the CLARiiON CX600 DAE
Replacing each FRU follows the steps required to remove the FRU
in reverse order. Re-connect the cables (not the Fibre Channel
cables) and double check them before powering up.End of Lab.Use
