The Humble and the Heroic: Wartime Italian Americans
At our October 4th Membership Meeting Dr. Salvatore LaGumina will speak about his book, The Humble and the Heroic: Wartime Italian Americans. Salvatore LaGumina's memoir of life in an Italian American community during World War II is a poignant story illuminating an important chapter in our collective memory of the past. It is told with charm and grace and will be of interest to general readers and specialists on the subject. (Stanislao G. Pugliese, Ph.D. Professor of History Hofstra University). The contributions of the immigrant Italian community to the war effort are legendary—13 Congressional Medal of Honor winners were of Italian descent and this did not include Don Gentile who became the highest scoring fighter pilot in American History. Equally important was the "unfeigned patriotism" of the Home Front Italians, perhaps best described by an immigrant Italian mother whose American GI son was captured. "We want America to win". We are over here since 1904, we've never been back... Clearly, her ordeal was one of many required extra measures of loyalty and patriotism on the road to assimilation. This is a history that was needed for a long time. Many will already have heard parts of it told over the dinner table or in backyard conversations. Now, writing with accuracy and much required wisdom, Sal LaGumina has put it all together for future generations. (William J. Council, Professor of History and La Motta Chair In Italian Studies, Seton Hall University)
