Mexican legen d has it that in the 16 th century, a young peasant child named Maria was distraught one Christmas Ev e, as she had no gift to lay before the altar of the baby Jesus in her local village church. As she walked to the chapel, saddened that her poverty prevented her from making even the smallest offering, her young cousin encouraged her that whatever she gave from her heart, no matter how humble, would be received by Jesus if it was offered in love. Una leggenda messicana dice che nel 16° secolo una giovane contadina di nome Maria era molto inquieta alla Vigilia di Natale, perché non aveva alcun dono da deporre davanti all’altare del Bambino Gesù nella chiesetta del suo villaggio. Mentre s’incamminava verso la cappella, triste perché la sua povertà le impediva di fare anc he il dono più misero , una sua giov ane cugina la incoraggiò, dicendole che qualsiasi cosa avesse dato dal cuore, per umile che fosse, se offerta con amore sarebbe stata accettata da Gesù.
