Major League Soccer’ 20th season kicks off on Viernes de Fútbol as the defending champion LA Galaxy play host to the Chicago Fire on Friday evening at StubHub Center. It was just three months ago that the Galaxy lifted the MLS Cup Trophy for a record fifth occasion, winning MLS Cup 2014 against the New England Revolution. They take on a Chicago Fire club looking to return to the postseason for the first time since 2012. REFEREE: Jair Marrufo. This is the only league meeting between the teams this season. The Galaxy have not lost to the Fire since 2010, a 3-2 Chicago victory in Carson on Aug. 1. In the six meetings
since, the Galaxy have won with two draws. The teams played to a 1-1 tie at Toyota Park in their only meeting last season.
The Fire have not defeated the Galaxy in Bridgeview since 2008, with two draws and three losses in home meetings since.
Coaches record: Bruce Arena vs. CHI: P18 W11 L4 D3 … Frank Yallop vs. LA: P24 W9 L8 D7 LA GALAXY The defending MLS champion LA Galaxy kick off their new season off an historic fifth MLS title, having defeated the New England Revolution 2-1 in extra time on their own ground barely three months ago. The Galaxy finished with the second-best league record in 2014, with 61 points, three behind Supporters’ Shield winners Seattle Sounders FC. TEAM NEWS
The defending MLS champion Galaxy concluded their preseason with a 3-2 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes in the first match played at Avaya Stadium in San Jose on Saturday, the goals coming from Robbie Keane and Jose Villarreal. The Galaxy ended the preseason with a 5-2-0 record.
Here’s the Galaxy team for the preseason finale: Brian Rowe; Dan Gargan, Leonardo (Todd Dunivant 46’), Omar Gonzalez, Robbie Rogers (Andre Auras 83’); Bradford Jamieson IV (Jose Villarreal 63’), Juninho, Kenney Walker (Rafael Garcia 71’), Stefan Ishizaki; Robbie Keane, Alan Gordon.
Three first-team regulars – Jaime Penedo, Baggio Husidic and Gyasi Zardes – as well as trialist Edson Buddle, all missed out on the San Jose match due to injury.
The Galaxy begin the 2015 season riding a 16-game league undefeated streak at StubHub Center, their last home loss in regular season play coming in last year’s season opener, a 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake on March 8.
“I don’t think that we’re quite there yet to be honest with you. Some players have played 90 minutes which has certainly helped for next week, but I don’t think that we’re there yet,” said Keane. “This is what preseason is for though because the results don’t matter. … You want to put things into practice for the upcoming season, but conceding goals especially on set pieces shouldn’t happen.”
Before the Earthquakes match, the Galaxy embarked upon a two-match European tour. They defeated Republic of Ireland side Shamrock Rovers FC 1-0 in Dublin, on a first-half goal from Mika Vayrynen. Previously, the Galaxy lost 2-1 to Hammarby IF in a match played in Stockholm, Robbie Keane converting a penalty for the lone goal.

MLS GAME INFORMATION
CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire are looking to make their first appearance in the MLS Cup Playoffs in three seasons when they start their second campaign under head coach Frank Yallop. The Fire recorded an MLS-record 18 draws a year ago on their way to a ninth-place finish in the Eastern Conference with 36 points. TEAM NEWS
The Fire ended their preseason schedule with three draws in three matches in the Simple Invitational in Portland, including draws against both the host Timbers (1-1) and Vancouver Whitecaps FC (1-1), the finale on Saturday.
The Fire concluded their preseason with a 1-0-4 record. The Fire set an MLS record with 18 draws in 34 league matches in 2014.
Here’s the Fire team from the preseason finale: Sean Johnson, Lovel Palmer, Jeff Larentowicz, Eric Gehrig, Joevin Jones, Harry Shipp (Kingsley Bryce 82), Chris Ritter (Matt Polster 72), Shaun Maloney, Matt Watson (Michael Stephens 67), Kennedy Igboananike (Shahdon Winchester 68), Quincy Amarikwa.
The match against the Timbers in the Portland event was the first of the preseason against an MLS side for the Fire. The club’s lone tally came through an own goal.
The Fire concluded the preseason with three goals from their five official preparatory matches. Quincy Amarikwa and trialist Shahdon Winchester netted goals, the third coming from an own goal.
The Fire conceded just two goals in their preseason matches, beginning the preparation matches with three consecutive clean sheets, all against European opposition (Norwich City FC, Queens Park Rangers [both England]; Stabaek IF [Norway]).
“I think there have been multiple back lines and everyone who's played has been part of the clean sheets,” defender Jeff Larentowicz said. “I think at this point the coaches are looking for the best combination ... Some guys played longer minutes so I think we're moving toward a back four, but again everybody is kind of in the mix there.”
Designated Player David Accam missed out on the final two preseason matches after suffering a groin injury in the match against Stabaek IF in Portland. Accam returned to Chicago for treatment ahead of the team’s return following the tournament.

DeLaGarza (questionable) – foot GAME PREVIEW: The LA Galaxy will train at StubHub Center this week ahead of opening kick for the 2015 MLS Regular Season. The Galaxy are scheduled to kick off their 20th season in MLS when they face the Chicago Fire on Friday, March 6 at StubHub Center live on UniMás beginning at 7 p.m. PT. The match will mark the 40th time that the Galaxy have faced Chicago in the MLS Regular Season and just the second time the clubs will face each other in the opening game of the season. The previous match also occurred when the Galaxy were the returning MLS Cup champions as the clubs played on March 3, 2013. The Galaxy are 9-8-2 all time in opening matches. In 2014, the Galaxy went 12-1-4 at StubHub Center during the regular season, scoring 44 goals and allowing just 14. 20TH SEASON IN MLS: Friday’s game will mark the first in the Galaxy’s 20th season in Major League Soccer. Since 1996, the Galaxy have scored a League-leading 951 goals, just 49 away from becoming the first team to score 1,000 goals in MLS with an overall record of 281-199-114 in MLS Regular Season competitions. GALAXY’S 2014 DOMINANT HOME RECORD: Last season, the Galaxy went 12-1-4 at StubHub Center during the regular season and 3-0-0 during the MLS Cup Playoffs. They are currently riding a 19-game unbeaten streak at StubHub Center in MLS competitions, with the last loss coming on March 8, 2014 against Real Salt Lake in the team’s home-opening match. The Galaxy outscored opponents 44-14 at StubHub Center last season, with a season-high 6-0 win over the Colorado Rapids on Sept. 9. A LOOK AT THE GALAXY ROSTER: Of the 30 players that were on the Galaxy roster at the end of the 2014 campaign, 24 are returning to the team, including nine of the 11 starters for MLS Cup. The players who are no longer with the club are Landon Donovan, Marcelo Sarvas, Rob Friend, James Riley, Chandler Hoffman and Kyle Venter. Donovan and Friend announced their retirements, Marcelo Sarvas was traded to the Colorado Rapids in exchange for allocation money and an allocation ranking, Chandler Hoffman and Kyle Venter were waived and James Riley’s contract expired. As of Wednesday, March 3, Steven Gerrard, who will join the Galaxy in July, is the only announced addition to the Galaxy. FIRST TO FIVE: On December 7, 2014, the Galaxy defeated the New England Revolution at StubHub Center to become the first team to win five MLS Cups, having previously won the MLS Cup in 2002, 2005, 2011 and 2012. Galaxy Homegrown Player Gyasi Zardes scored the game’s opening goal when he scored in the second half before New England leveled the game late. In extra time, MLS MVP Robbie Keane scored the game-winning goal to give the Galaxy the historic 2-1 victory.
GALAXY ADD GERRARD: In January, the Galaxy announced the signing of Liverpool and England legend Steven Gerrard, who will join the club in July following the Barclay’s Premier League. The midfielder joins the Galaxy after leading Liverpool to 10 major trophies over the past 15 years, including the UEFA Champions League (2005), UEFA Cup (2001), UEFA Super Cup (2001, 2005), FA Cup (2001, 2006), FA Community Shield (2006) and League Cup (2001, 2003, 2012). Individually, he has earned honors as the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Young Player of the Year (2001), PFA Player of the Year (2006), Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year (2009), PFA Fans’ Player of the Year (2001, 2009), PFA Team of the Year (2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2014), FA England Player of the Year (2007, 2012), UEFA Club Footballer of the Year (2005) and FIFA’s Ballon d’Or Bronze Award (2005). ZARDES RECIEVES USMNT CALL: LA Galaxy Homegrown Player Gyasi Zardes continued to excel this offseason when he received his first call up to the U.S. Men’s National Team by head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. He made his first appearance January 28, 2015 when he appeared as a second-half substitution in a friendly against Chile. On Feb. 8, he earned his first start when the U.S. took on Panama at StubHub Center, earning a man-of-the-match performance after recording an assist. 2015 BLUE ON BLUE SECONDARY KITS: LA Galaxy released earlier this week the team’s 2015 Blue on Blue secondary kit, which will be worn during the course of the 34-game MLS Regular Season. The kit features different shades of blue with yellow highlights on the sleeves. Additionally, the Galaxy are selling a 10-month calendar featuring players A.J. They kicked off the initiative with an LA Galaxy Build Day with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles. The following week, the Galaxy participated in the 2015 National Education’s Read Across America Day with Los Angeles Area Schools as the Galaxy helped read Oh, The Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Suess. NEXT UP: The Galaxy will travel to Portland to face the Timbers on Sunday, March 15 at 4 p.m. PT, broadcast live on Fox to a national audience.

In 2013, then-Galaxy midfielder Mike Magee scored a hat trick as the Fire fell 4-0. In 2014, Benji Joya and Quincy Amarikwa tallied for the Fire but the Men in Red fell 3-2 to Chivas USA. The two sides met once during the 2014 season, battling to a 1-1 draw at Toyota Park on June 1. Jeff Larentowicz converted a penalty kick in the 68th minute after Quincy Amarikwa was fouled in the box before Landon Donovan equalized for the visitors in the 74th minute. The Fire are 15-19-5 all-time in regular season matches against the Galaxy, including a 6-10-3 record in matches played on the road. The last time the Fire won at The StubHub Center was a 3-2 victory over the Galaxy on Aug. 1, 2010.
A LOOK AT THE FIRE The Chicago Fire enter their 18th season of MLS play after a busy offseason. With two-time MLS Cup champion and two-time MLS Coach of the Year Frank Yallop at the helm, the Men in Red made a slew of changes, shoring up the roster with three Designated Player signings, adding Kennedy Igboananike, David Accam and Shaun Maloney. With a distinct local flavor, the Fire added Michael Stephens, Eric Gehrig and Homegrown Players Collin Fernandez and Patrick Doody, bringing the number of players with Chicago ties on the roster to seven. Although there were a number of changes, the Fire return a strong core of players including captain Jeff Larentowicz, U.S. international Sean Johnson and 2014 MLS Rookie of the Year finalist and Homegrown Player Harry Shipp. ATHLETICO INJURY REPORT: March 4, 2015 Out David Accam – Groin Strain Razvan Cocis – Foot Strain Mike Magee – Hip and Knee Surgery Patrick Nyarko – ACL Surgery PLAYER TRANSACTIONS OUT 10/25/14 – M Logan Pause announces retirement 11/18/14 – Decline options on defenders Marco Franco, Patrick Ianni, Hunter Jumper, Steven Kinney, Gonzalo Segares and Bakary Soumare; midfielders Alex and Sanna Nyassi; and forwards Robert Earnshaw, Matt Fondy and Florent Sinama-Pongolle. 12/18/14 – Juan Luis Anangono transferred to Universidad de Guadalajara 12/31/14 – Loan ends for Benji Joy and Grant Ward 12/31/14 – Contract expires for Victor Pineda 1/20/15 – GK Kyle Reynish traded to New York Red Bulls IN 8/28/14 – M Collin Fernandez signed as a Homegrown Player 10/29/14 – D Lovel Palmer re-signed 11/18/14 – M Patrick Nyarko re-signed 12/2/14 – F Kennedy Igboananike signed as a Designated Player 12/3/14 – D Joevin Jones signed 12/9/14 – M Michael Stephens signed 12/10/14 – D Eric Gehrig acquired via trade with Orlando City SC 12/19/14 – M/F David Accam signed as a Designated Player 12/22/14 – D Patrick Doody signed as Homegrown Player 12/30/14 – D Adailton signed 1/5/15- F Guly do Prado signed 1/25/15 – M Alex re-signed 1/25/15 – M Shaun Maloney signed as a Designated Player 1/27/15 – GK Jon Busch signed 2/4/15 – D Matt Polster signed

CHICAGO FIRE – LA GALAXY CONNECTIONS Five members of the Fire have ties with the Galaxy. Fire head coach Frank Yallop served as Galaxy head coach in 2006-07. In 2006, Yallop appointed current Fire Head of Scouting Trevor James as a Galaxy Assistant Coach. Greg Cochrane, who joined the Fire via trade with the Galaxy on March 3, 2014, was selected 38th overall by the Galaxy in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. In his first season as a professional, Cochrane started nine of his 12 MLS appearances for the Galaxy, and started both CONCACAF Champions League matches in which he appeared. Cochrane also appeared once in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play. Chicago’s native son Mike Magee joined the Fire via trade with the Galaxy on May 25, 2013 after five seasons and two MLS Cup championship with the Galaxy. In five seasons with the Galaxy, Magee made 105 regular season appearances, scored 19 goals and added 11 assists. Naperville, Ill. product Michael Stephens signed with the Fire on Dec. 9, 2014. After a four-year collegiate career at UCLA, Stephens was selected in the first round (16th overall) by the LA Galaxy in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. In four seasons with the Galaxy, Stephens made 94 appearances, scoring two goals and tallying 12 assists in MLS play. Stephens also scored two goals in 17 CONCACAF Champions League matches and appeared in four Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup matches during his time in Los Angeles. CHICAGO FIRE ROSTER STATS Nine nations of birth are represented on the Fire roster: Brazil (Alex, do Prado, Adailton), England (Watson), Ghana (Accam, Nyaro), Jamaica (Palmer), Malaysia (Maloney), Nigeria (Igboananike), Romania (Cocis) and Trinidad and Tobago (Jones). Fourteen Fire players were born in the United States. Seven players currently occupy International Roster spots: Accam, Cocis, do Prado, Adailton, Igboananike, Jones and Maloney. Eight states are represented on the Fire roster. Illinois leads the way with six players (Magee, Stephens, Shipp, Ritter, Doody, Fernandez), with Gehrig hailing from northwest Indiana. Other states that Fire players call home: Georgia (Johnson, Kann), Pennsylvania (Cochrane, Larentowicz), California (Amarikwa), Nevada (Polster), Virginia (Nyarko) and New York (Busch). Fourteen players played collegiately. Two Homegrown products won national championships with their respective schools: Doody (2012 – Indiana University) and Shipp (Notre Dame – 2013). Four players have MLS Cup championship experience. Magee and Stephens won back-to-back titles with the LA Galaxy in 2011 and 2012. Amarikwa and Larentowicz were both part of the Colorado Rapids squad that captured MLS Cup 2010. CHICAGO FIRE MAKE TWO ADDITIONS TO TECHNICAL STAFF Chicago Fire Head Coach and Director of Soccer Frank Yallop made two additions to his technical staff, appointing Marc Bircham assistant coach and Adrian Lamb as strength and conditioning coach. Born in Wembley, England, Bircham joins the Fire after most recently serving as an assistant coach with English Championship side Millwall. A defensive midfielder in his playing days, Bircham, a Canadian international with 17 caps and one goal to his name, began his professional career with Millwall in 1996, amassing 104 appearances in seven years before transferring to Queens Park Rangers in 2002, where he made 152 appearances for The Hoops before joining Yeovil Town in 2007. After retiring in 2009, Bircham joined the coaching ranks when he took the reigns of QPR in 2009 where he served before joining Millwall in 2014. A Sports Studies graduate of Northumbria University, Lamb joins the Fire as the Strength and Conditioning Coach after previously serving in the position at English clubs Preston North End, Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa, and most recently with Toronto FC.
