Image Intensified (I2) Systems


The NVG with Gen III night vision image tube is typically worn either head or helmet-mounted. When used with optional helmet mount, goggle will automatically shut off in the stowed position. An integrated infrared (IR) LED illuminator provides short range illumination allowing such activities as map reading, night repairs or maintenance tasks in extreme darkness.

AN/PVS-7Night Vision Goggle (NVG), (M963)

These compact/lightweight Gen III binoculars can be handheld or helmet-mounted. Automatic brightness control and high light tube cut-off protection. Particularly suited for operations where depth perception is critical for mission performance such as controlling land vehicles and boats at high speeds and is submersible to 66 ft. An integrated IR LED illuminator provides short range illumination allowing such activities as map reading.

The M24 binocular provides 122m field of view at 1,000m range (7o) and is the auxiliary field binocular for the U.S. Army and the U.S.M.C. Like the M22 binocular, the objective focus is "fixed" at infinity, enabling the operator to rapidly scan for targets, regardless of range, without having to adjust focus.

The Clip-On Thermal Imager (COTI) is a small, lightweight night vision goggle accessory designed to provide long-wave thermal imaging thereby significantly enhancing the operator’s current image intensification capability. The COTI attaches accurately and reliably to the night vision goggle and is precisely aligned to the intensified image providing immediate thermal capability to the operator already equipped with a night vision device.

Night Vision I 2 View Fused View

The FGS combines the light amplification capability of Image Intensification (I2) devices such as AN/PVS-15 night vision goggles with the heat sensing capability of thermal imaging systems. The FGS allows the operator to adjust the viewed image from 100% I2 to 100% thermal, or a varying mix of the two. The system amplifies available light and thermal signatures and fuses them together to produce a clear image under adverse conditions. The FGS provides unparalleled image resolution in situations where active infrared (IR) illumination is not an option.

The ENVG is a helmet-mounted dual waveband monocular that uses the latest in technology developments. The ENVG provides the operator with significantly improved targeting and identification in all battlefield conditions and light levels. The ENVG uses image intensification technology fused with thermal imagery, thereby bridging the gap in performance and capability for both of these sensors. The ENVG is based upon the combat proven Insight Fusion Goggle System (FGS), and is compatible with aiming lasers operating in the near infrared wavelengths.

The STORM is a weapon-mounted, battery operated laser rangefinder with integrated infrared (IR) illumination and aiming lasers (IR and variable), and a Digital Magnetic Compass (DMC). It may be used to display target location as geo-spatial coordinates (grid or slant). When weapon-mounted, the visible aim laser enables the STORM to be aligned with existing optics, and the IR illuminator and IR aim laser facilitate target acquisition and aiming in low ambient light conditions.

The SLAM-R is a ruggedized laser rangefinder with integrated visible and IR lasers for aiming and illumination. SLAM-R is based on the field proven STORM rangefinder currently in service (AN/PSQ-23), but is specifically designed for use on manned and unmanned vehicles and crew-served weapons.

The Handheld Laser Marker (HLM) is a small, lightweight device that emits NATO Band I/II compatible coded laser energy to quickly mark and handoff targets for engagement with precision guided munitions. HLM’s coded laser energy is easily detected by spot-tracker equipped aircraft and reduces target handoff times from many minutes to only seconds.

Applied Optics Center (AOC) keeps pace with the rapidly- changing requirements needed for precision band, edge placements, environmental durability, and performance stability. The coating chambers at AOC are eight times the size of most common chambers and gives L-3 Warrior Systems a competitive advantage in producing high volume custom optics where "slice and dice" is not an option. Very large optics can also be coated in these chambers, up to 24" diameter.
