Globalisation, population change and migration

1. Know how globalisation has effected population

2. Understand how globalisation has led to population change

Page 5: L2 ap dtm 2013

Population Growth

• Exponential growth in last 100 years. • Globally population is over 7 billion now. • Asia and Africa currently have high rate of

growth. • China has 1.3b and India has 1.2b. • Population growth puts pressure on resources

in that area. E.g. China now has to import raw materials from …………………….

Population Change

• Any population can change due to two factors; …………………………………… and ………………………..

• Natural change is the difference between the birth and death rate. It could therefore be negative as well as positive.

• Migrational change could also be positive (UK) or negative (Poland) for a country.

Factors affecting Migration

• Migrants take with them beliefs, cultures and help to mix societies so are a key element of globalisation.

• Push factors help to turn people away from an area (e.g. ………………………………………………………)

• Pull factors help to pull people into an area (e.g. …………………………………………………………)

Demographic Transition Model

Page 12: L2 ap dtm 2013

Population growth over time

• The Demographic Transition Model • The Demographic Transition Model (DTM) is a

model used to explain the transformation of countries from high birth rates and high death rates to low birth rates and low death rates as part of the economic development of a country from a pre-industrial to a highly industrialised country.

The DTM continued …

• It is based on the American demographer Warren Thompson’s prior observed changes, or transitions, in birth and death rates in developed economies over the past 200 years.

• It shows;– 1. Change over space – different countries are at

different places on the DTM – 2. Change over time – a country should progress

through each stage of development over time. Globalisation, population change and migration

Population PyramidsA population pyramid is a graphical illustration showing the

distribution of various age groups in a population which normally forms the shape of a pyramid.
