• During the war, Soviet Union had occupied much of Eastern Europe.

• Iron Curtain = “line” of separation between democracy and communism

5. The Marshall Plan• Goal: Prevent the

spread of communism by helping to restore Europe’s economies– In their best interest to

rebuild Europe and prevent political and economic instability

• Provided massive economic aid ($13 B)

occupied by American forces• Adopted a democratic

government, resumed self-rule and became strong ally of the U.S.

USSR’s Role:In response to NATO, created & controlled alliances

Countries: U.S., Canada, 10 Western European nations

Purpose: To defend against a possible Soviet invasion of Western Europe
