PREFACE

The 10th International Congress on Catalysis (1Oth ICC) will bc held in Budapcst,Hungary, through 19-24 July,1992.

The Congress is organized under the auspices of the Council of the Intcrnational Congrcsson Catalysis, the Hungarian Catalysis Society and the Chcmistry Section of thc FlungarianAcademy of Sciences.

TNTRODUCTIONOn behalf of the Organizing Cornmittee, we have the honour to welcomc you as

participants of the 10th International Congress on Catalysis in Hungary, a country now, two

years after the change of regime, the 24th Member of thc European Community and

Associate Member of the European Communíty. Aíter prcvious congresscs he|d at four-

year intervals in various parts of the world, in Philadelphia (1956), Paris, Amsterdam,

Moscow, Palm Beach, lxrndon, Tokyo, Berlin and Calgary, it is now our great privilege to

organize the ICC.f irst t ime in Budapest. You wil l see Budapcst in summer although many

of vou may have been acquainted with our capital through somc scicntific an<l othcr

cultural events. The Organizing Comrnittee hopes your stay in Hungary will be cnjoyablo

and you will have a chance to see the sights of our lovely capital and some spots of intcrcst

in the countryside as well.International Congresses on Catalysis have ahvays givcn spccial emphasis to

hetcrogcneous catalysis. The programme of the 10th International Congress on Catalysiswil l focus on New F-rontiers in Catalysis including "nontradit ional" catalyt ic materials and

environmental catalytic problems. The contributions cover a wicle rangc of lundarnontal, applied, industrial and engineering aspects of cataiysis. The extending range and high

efficiency of industrial techniques for observing cata|ytically imp<lrtant surÍaces arc aiso

evident in the programme."fhe Organizing C.ommittcc decidcd to follow thc tradition of previous Congrcsscs

to anange no more than two parallel sessions. We have increased the nurnber of postcrssomewhat to accommodatc a total of about 470 papers from 38 countrics. Even so, thisrequired sometimes painful decisions in choosing frorn the 764 abstracts submitted. ThcOrganizing Committee is most grateful to the Members of the Paper Selection Committccand to the panel of referees who helped to make these choices.

Assistance in meeting the expenses of the Congress has come from a number of

sources to lvhom the Committee is most grateful.Valuable assistance with local arrangements has been provided by a number of

persons in the catalysis and engineering community in Budapest ancl at major Hungarian

Universities and Chemical Companies. Although having been sometimes only periphcrally

interested in catalysis, they have been eager to ensure the success of this importantgathering in Budapest.

The layout of the Budapest C.onvention Centre seemed particularly well suited to anaccompanying exhibition which is being included in the 1Oth ICC.

We hope that you find the scientific programme outstanding, thc excellcnt socialevents rewarding and Budapest will provide beautiful and fascinating environment for yourstay. We are pleased to have the opportunity to host the 10th International Congress on

Catalysis and our Committee sincerely hopes that you will be able to attend. We will makeevery effort to make your sojourn in Hungary pleasant and memorable.
