ADD GASOLINE
° Fill fuel tank. Use fresh, clean, regular unleadedgasoline,_ (Use of leaded gasoline will increase carbonand lead oxide deposits and reduce valve life.
IMPORTANT= WHEN OPERATING IN TEMPERATURESBELOW 32aF (0aC), USE FRESH. CLEAN, WINTERGRADE GASOLINE TO HELP INSURE GOOD COLDWEATHER STARTING,
WARNING: Experience indicates that alcohol blendedfuels (called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol) canattract moisturewhich leads to separation and formation ofacids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuelsystem of an engine while in storage. To avoid engineproblems, the fuel system should be emptied before stor-age of 30 days or longer. Drain the gas tank, start theengine and let it run until the fuel lines and carburetor areempty° Use fresh fuel next season. See Storage sectionof thismanual for additional information. Never use engineorcarburetorcleaner productsinthefuel tankorpermanentdamage may occur.
CAUTION: Fill to within 1/2 inch of topof fuel tank to prevent spills and toallow for fuel expansion. If gasoline isaccidentally spilled, move machineaway from area of spill. Avoid creatingany source of ignition until gasolinevapors have disappeared.
Do not overfill. Wipe off any spilled oilor fuel. Do not store, spill or use gaso-line near an open flame.

, Tilling is digging into, turning over, and breaking uppacked soil before planting. Loose, unpacked soilhelps root growth. Best tilling depth is 4' to 6". A tillerwill also clear the soil of unwanted vegetation. Thedecomposition of this vegetable matter enriches thesoil. Depending on the climate (rainfall and wind), itmay be advisable to till the soil at the end of the growingseason to further condition the soil.
= For easier handling of your tiller, leave about 8 inchesof untilled soil between the first and second tillingpasses. The third pass will be between the first andsecond (See Fig° 14).
12
° Soilconditions are important for proper tilling. Tines willnot readily penetrate dry, hard soil which may contrib-ute to excessive bounce and difficulthandling of yourtiller. Hard soil should be moistened before tilling;however, extremely wet soil will "ball-up" or clumpduringtilling, Wait until the soil is less wet in order toachieve the best results. When tillinginthe fall, removevines and long grass to prevent them from wrappingaroundthe tineshaft and slowing your tUlingoperation.
° Do notleanonhandle. This takesweightoffthe wheelsand reduces traction, To get through a really toughsection of sod or hard ground, apply upward pressureon handle or lower the depth stake.
FIG. 14
CULTIVATINGCultivating is destroying the weeds between rows to pre-vent them from robbing nourishment and moisture from theplants. At the same time, breaking up the upper layer of soilcrust wiUhelp retain moisture in the soil. Best digging depthts 1" to 3"° Lower the outer side shields to protect smallplants from being buried.
• Cultivate up and down the rows at a speed which willallow tines to uproot weeds and leave the ground inrouqh condition, promoting no further growth of weedsancrgrass (See Fig. 15).
TINE SHEAR PINSThe tine assemblies on your tillerare secured to the tineshaft with shear pins (See 'q'INE REPLACEMENT" in theService and Adjustments section of thismanual).
If the tiller is unusually overloaded or jammed, the shearpins are designed to break before internaldamage occursto the transmission.
° If shear pin(s) break, replace onlywith those shown inthe Repair Parts section of thismanual
1 - Change more often when operating under a heavy load or in high ambient temperatures,2 - Service more often when operating in dirty or dusty conditions,
GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS
The warranty on this tiller does not cover items that havebeen subjected to operator abuse or negligence. Toreceive full value from the warranty, the operator mustmaintain tiller as instructed in this manual.
Some adjustments will need to be made periodically toproperly maintain your tiller. All adjustments in the Service and Adjustments section ofthis manual should be checked at least once eachseason°
Once a year you should replace the spark plug, cleanor replace air filter, and check tines and belts for wear°A new spark plug and clean air filter assure proper air-fuel mixture and help your engine run better and lastlonger°

TINE REPLACEMENT (See Figs. 24, 25 and26)
CAUTION: Tines are sharp. Wearoves or other protection when han-
g tines.
A badly worn fine causes yourtiller to work harderand digmore shallow. Most important, worntines cannot chop andshred organic matter as effectively nor bury it as deeply asgood tines. A tine this worn needs to be replaced.
NEW liNE WORN"lINE
FIG. 24
• To maintain the superb tilling performance of thismachine the tines should be checked for sharpness, wear, andbending, particu]arlythetines which are nextto the transmismon+ If the gap between the tinesexceeds 3-1!2 inches they should be replaced orstraightenedas necessary.
• New tines should be assembled as shown in Fig+26°Sharpened tineedges willrotate rearward from above.

TO ADJUST CARBURETOR (See Fig. 28)
The carburetor has a highspeedjet and has beenpresetatthe factory and adjustmentshoutdnotbe necessary. How-ever, minor' adjustments may be required to compensatefor differences in fuel, temperature, altitudeor'load. If thecarburetor does need adjustment, proceed as follows.
In general, turning the idle needle valve in (clockwise)decreases the supplyof fuel to the engine givinga leanerfueVair mkture. Turning the needle valve out (counter-clockwise) increases the supplyof fuel to the enginegivinga richer fueVair mixture.
IMPORTANT: DAMAGE TO THE NEEDLES AND THESEATS IN CARBURETOR MAY RESULT IF SCREWSARE TURNED IN TOO TIGHT.
PRELIMINARY SETTING
o Air cleaner assembly must be assembled tothe carbu-retor when making carburetor adjustments°
o Be sure the throttle control cable is adjusted properly(see above).
• With engine off, turn idle needle valve in (clockwise)closing it finger tight and then turn valve out (counter-clockwise) 1-1/2 tUmSo
FINAL SETTING
° Start engine and allow to warm for five minutes,, Makefinal adjustmentswith engine runningat idle and drivecontrolbar in "DISENGAGED" position.
• With throttlecontrol lever in "SLOW" position, turn idleneedle valve in (clockwise) until engine beginsto diethen turn out (bounterclockwise) until encinerg'nunsrough. Turn valveto a point midway between those twopositions.
IDLE RPM ADJUSTMENT
° To adjust idle RPM, rotate throttle linkage counter-clockwise and hold against stop while adjusting idlespeed adjustingscrew to obtain 1750 RPM. Releasethrottle linkage.
ACCELERATION TEST• Move throttle control lever from "SLOW'' to "FAST"
position. If engine hesitates or dies, turn needle valveout (counterclockwise) 1/8 turn. Repeat test andcontinue to adjust, if necessary, until engine acceler-ates smoothly.
High speed stop is factory adjusted,. Do not adjust ordamage may result.IMPORTANT: NEVER TAMPER WITH THE ENGINEGOVERNOR, WHICH IS FACTORY SET FOR PROPERENGINE SPEED° OVERSPEEDtNG THE ENGINE ABOVETHE FACTORY HIGH SPEED SETTING CAN BEDANGEROUS. immediately prepare your tiller for storage at the end of theseason or if the unit will not be used for 30 days or more.
CAUTION: Never store the tiller with
gasoline in the tank inside a buildingwhere fumes may reach an open flameor spark. All?w the enpine to coolbefore storing m any enclosure.
o Clean entire tiller (See "CLEANING" in the CustomerResponsibilities section of this manual)°
° inspect and replace belts, if necessary (See belt re-placement instructionsinthe Service and Adjustmentssection of this manual),
° Lubricate as shown in the Customer Responsibilitiessection of this manual,
° Be sure that all nuts, bolts and screws are securelyfastened. Inspect moving parts for damage, breakageand wear. Replace if necessary.
• Touch up_all rusted or chipped paint surfaces; sandlightly before painting.
ENGINE
FUEL SYSTEMIMPORTANT: IT IS IMPORTANT TO PREVENT GUMDEPOSITS FROM FORMING IN ESSENTIAL FUELSYSTEM PARTS SUCH AS THE CARBURETOR, FUELFILTER, FUEL HOSE, OR TANK DURING STORAGE°ALSO, EXPERIENCE INDICATES THAT ALCOHOLBLENDED FUELS (CALLED GASOHOL OR USINGETHANOL OR METHANOL) CAN ATTRACT MOISTUREWHICH LEADS TO SEPARATION AND FORMATION OFACIDS DURING STORAGE. ACIDIC GAS CAN DAMAGETHE FUEL SYSTEM OFAN ENGINE WHILE IN STORAGE.° Drain the fijel tank.
° Start the engine and let it run until the fuel lines andcarburetor are empty.
. Never use engine orcarburetorcleaner productsin thefuel tank or permanent damage may occur.
- Use fresh fuel next season°
NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alternative inminimizing the formation of fuel gum depositsduring stor-age. Add stabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or storagecontainer. Always follow the mix ratio found on stabilizercontainer. Run engine at least 10 minutes after addi.ngstabilizer to allow the stabilizer to reachthe carburetor. Donot drain the gas tank and carburetor if using fuel stabilizer_
ENGINE OIL
Drain oil (with engine warm) and replace with clean oil.(See"ENG INE" in the CustomerResponsibilities section ofthis manual),,
CYLINDERS
° Remove spark plug,• Pour I ounce (29 ml) of oilthrough spark plug hole into
cylinder,
° Pull starter handle slowly severaltimes to distribute oilo• Replace with new spark ptug.
OTHER° Do not store gasoline from one season to another°° Replace your gasoline can if your can starts to rust.
Rust and!or dirt in your gasoline will cause problems- tf possible, store your unit indoors and cover it to give
protection from dust and dirt.
° Cover your unit with a su_able protect_e cover thatdoes not retain moisture. Do not use plastic. Plasticcannot breathe which allows condensation to form andwill cause your unit to rusL
IMPORTANT: NEVER COVER TILLER WHILE ENGINEAND EXHAUST AREAS ARE STILL WARM.
