INTRODUCTION
The "Federal Court Cases ' ''- study h.as two datafiles for 1962-1963 :and two datafiles for 1963-1964. Each datafile has one card of data for each' case. The N for the 1962-1963 criminal cases i~ 36,260. The N for the i962-l963 civil cases is 59,960. The N for the 1963-1964 criminal cases is 35,080. The N for the 1963-1964 civil cases is 61,670. The same codebook.is used for 1962-1963 and 1963-1964. The codebook has two sections each section representing one card of data for 1962-1963 and one card of data for 1963-1964. The first section is the "Federal Criminal Code;" the second is the "Federal Civil Cases."

PROCESSING INFORMATION
Originally, more than one code value was punched in some of the columns; When these studies were taped by the Survey Research Archive, there was no progra~ available to handle the multiple punches. If the punch was not valid on the IBM 360 system, it was converted to a blank. This is unfortunate because blanks were also used throughout these two files to represent missing data.
'The:~e are no present plans to recover the lost multiple punches. The user should be aware that a blank in a particular column could reflect a missing data code; or it could reflect substantive data that was lost during the taping process.
