At 36, his baby-faced looks may belie the countless hours of man- ual labour, but Harvey never forgets what he took out personally. One of his old work- mates there, the late Billy Brenner, taught him a vital life lesson. By instructing Harvey how to strip out old engines and service earthmoving gear, he also instilled in him the idea of doing a job properly. Harvey attributes his early apprenticeship to the successful music ca- reer that followed. With seven Golden Guitar Awards and 300,000 al- bums sold, Harvey has become one of Austra- lia’s most enduring coun- try music stars. Never one to forget, the first song on his new al- bum, Built to Last, pays tribute to Brenner. ‘‘Billy taught me about getting things right from the start and always said that if you take your time, it’ll last forever,’’ Harvey says. More tangible lessons were learnt during Harvey’s young years digging for gold. Long days at work would fin- ish at the local pub, where a music-loving landlord would encour- age Harvey to pick up a lone guitar and entertain the other miners. ‘‘He’d tell me that as long as I kept singing I’d never buy a drink,’’ Harvey says. ‘‘I’d play requests for miners all night and they’re a tough crowd, so I thought if I can enter- tain all these blokes in this rowdy pub it might be worth making a go of it full time.’’ Harvey’s break came during a trip to Tamwor- th in 1998, where he won his first country music award with singer Tanya Self for their duet Drive Away, before signing to Warner Music. While much of Harvey’s songwriting can be traced to the min- ing pub at Fosterville, these days his inspi- ration is his local water- ing hole in Bateau Bay on the Central Coast. New songs like Hair of the Dog, One More Beer and The Bay Hotel sug- gest Harvey is still prone to perform for the odd schooner. ‘‘I love a party and a drink but not as much as I used to because the hangovers hurt too much these days,’’ he says with a laugh. Other tracks from his seventh album, Falling into Place, unleash his usual mix of good times and catchy choruses. It’s a vibe the singer carries into his live shows. He is set to tour in the coming months.
