L26 Tornadoes• What does a tornado look like?
• What is a tornado? • A tornado is a violent, rotating column of air stretching from a cloud to the
ground.
• Weather conditions needed to form tornadoes:• Warm, humid air mass meets cold, dry air mass• Cold air moves under the warm air, forcing it to rise
• What do we call a tornado that forms over water?• Waterspouts
Tornadoes
• What makes them dangerous? • Strong winds and flying debris
• Tornado Watch: tornadoes are possible in your area• Tornado Warning: tornado has been seen in the sky or on
radar
Safety: basement, bathroom, under heavy furniture, away from windows, or lie flat in a ditch
Hurricanes
Hurricanes
• What is a hurricane:– Large rotating tropical weather system
• How are they formed?– When wind traveling in two different directions
meet– Over warm ocean water– Energy comes from condensation of water vapor
evaporating from ocean
Hurricanes
• What makes them dangerous?– Storm surges: A dome of water sweeps across
the coast– Heavy rain = floods– Wind
• Safety: – Evacuate area– Cover windows with plywood– Stay indoors

Review:1. List 4 types of air masses.2. What does it mean if an air mass is warm
and humid?3. List the 4 types of fronts.4. Which front can bring weird weather (an
example would be hail)?
1. List 4 types of air masses.a) Maritimeb) Continentalc) Polard) Tropical
2. What does it mean if an air mass is warm and humid?a) Maritime Tropical: near equator and over water
3. List the 4 types of fronts.a) Coldb) Warmc) Stationaryd) Occluded
4. Which front can bring weird weather (an example would be hail)? What is happening to the air masses?
a) Occluded: warm front trapped between two cold fronts
