This massive historic rehabilitation project combines three existing buildings in Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine National Historic Disctirct into a new center for the area’s booming start-up and entrepeneurship culture. The three separate buildings are combined to produce an eff icient catalyst for creative thinking and work. The program includes several large workspaces, a lecture hall, private huddle rooms, and permanant off ices for several of Cincinnati’s most prolif ic start-ups, including The Brandery and Cincy Tech. In addition, the building will house a restaurant, night club, a large mutlipurpose space, and a new roof deck and bar.

The project involved a multitude of evolving design strategies and priorities. Because of the age of the buildings and their array of functions over the last century, new conditions and challenges emerged throughout the investigation and design process.

Specif ic duties included f ield measurements and verif ications of existing conditions, photo documentation of historical and structural features, sketch-up modeling and rendering, schematic design, and detailing.

HISTORIC RENOVATION PROJECTS

Renovating historic structures is a multi-faceted process. From analysis of exsiting structures to the implementation of modern amenities and code, the importance of intelligent design in nationally signif icant neighborhoods and structures is constantly increasing. The historic core of Cincinnati is seeing an inf lux of young residents with dif ferent aesthetic and professional ideals. Urban revival, sustainability, and neighborhood cohesion are the driving factors behind the successful surge of historic renovation in these interesting neighborhoods of Cincinnati.

Specif ic duties included f ield measurements and verif ications of existing conditions, photo documentation, state and federal tax credit submissions, space planning, residential unit layouts, and submitting permit sets.

A new branch of the City College of San Francisco located at the border of two of the city’s most recognized neighborhoods. A fourteen story concrete and glass tower, the project was in collaboration with another local firm. A multi-level fritted glass mural serves as a dramatic base to San Francisco’s newest tower.

Specific duties include composition of the glass fritted curtain wall mural, composed of imagery meant to celebrate the unique history of the neighborhood and its people.

My thesis discusses the relationship between construction and nature. Unlike urban environments, national parks and monuments reign over man’s imprint, forcing architecture and civilization to take on a different language. The project, a year round visitor center located in the Glacier Basin Campground, a campground recently ravaged by mountain pine beetle and clear cut by the NPS, focuses on education, recreation, and individual exploration.

TRAIL : The trails of the park continue into the building, spliting it into two halves based on function. CIVILIZATION : Houses basic services and represents the more reserved side of a park trip.

WILDERNESS : Represents exploration in the park through interactivr exhibits and learning opportunities

This elective studio focused on the life and works of sculptor and designer Harry Bertoia. Located on his family estate in rural Bally, Pennsylvania, the final project focused on the relocation and expansion of a small barn and museum currently run by Bertoia’s son. The program consists of separate spaces housing permanent works of Bertoia and temporary installations from visiting artists. Site planning allows a separation of the museum from the residence on the south side of the site, where his son Val Bertoia currently resides. The form is based on Bertoia’s famous sculptures that play with controlled modular chaos and distinct connections. Each module houses a different form of art ranging from welded bronze to jewelry. The materiality of the modular form allows for a meshing with the wooded site.

ATH

This swimming and recreation area is a celebration of Danish culture. The canal is a lifesource for the city and is a focal point of day to day activites. This harbor bath is situated on the canal running through the neighborhood of Sydhavn in southwest Copenhagen. Diving platforms of varied heights separate swimming areas, while boat and kayak docks serve as other programatic elements. The form is based on the unravelling and warping of wood that occurs due to water. Spaces and elements arise from the deck like waves to become dominant formal features. The diving welll serves as the focal point, always in view from the approach to the immersion into the canal. The oblique entrance ramp serves as perhaps the strongest element, forcing the user to experience the form before experiencing the water.

This six month capstone studio focused on a culmination of skills learned in the first four years of architecture school. Termed SEC for Structures, Environment, and Construction, the project is a wellness center catering to the needs of students and faculty at Cranbrook Academy. There is a main focus on relaxation and spiritual well-being. The center includes aromatherapy pools, rooftop yoga studios, sauna and steam rooms with neighboring plunge pools, massage therapy rooms, and an adjacent residential structure. The volume is influenced by the sloping topography of the site, appearing to rise from the subtle wooded hills . The plan is influenced by the existing campus plan which focuses on courtyards and the merging of public and private gathering spaces.
