STRUCTURE + FORM1A Installation Fall 2009Design StudioIn collaboration with: Kemal Alladin, Giles Hall, Miguel Sanchez- Enkerlin and Milde MiskintyeProfessor: Rick Andrighetti

This installation examined the relationships present within structure and form. It is comprised of two main elements, a suspended canopy and a self supporting arch which both mimic the shape of waves crashing against rock. The boxes are bound in chains by snapping the the lip of one onto that of the box preceding it. By layering and folding shorter chains a rigid spine is created which allows a self suporting arch to emerge from the intital pattern laid out on the gallery wall.

ARCHITECTONICS

The goal of this project was to explore the basic principles of architectonics. In addition it served as our first real comprehensive architectural modeling experience. Each model was required to have basic elements such as a column, a beam a wall and a roof in addition these elements would serve to create a unique place of repose.

PAVILLION SSSEF Curvature CompetitionWinter 2010In collaboration with: Andrew WintersBuilding Construction + Visual CommunicationsProfessors: Terri Meyer Boake + March Cichy

Architectonics revisited. Every year students compete in the Structural Steel Edu-cation Foundations annual design competition. They are asked to design a struc-ture that enhances and displays the qualities of steel while following a specific theme. For this years competition the theme was curvature, however the design chosen by my group implemented rigid steel members arranged at different angles and heights to achieve fluctuation and fluidity.

OASIS1B Passively Designed RefugeWinter 2010Envrionmental DesignProfessor: Terri Meyer Boake

10

The Oasis project was an attempt to create a 100% passive refuge that maintains a sense of thermal comfort through materiality and experience. The main strategy was to move most of the building underground to re-duce contact with the sun. In addition the main pathway acts as a wind tunnel drawing wind into the spaces below while thermal mass works to retain heat at night.

WINDRUNNER1B Sustainable TrailerSpring 2010Visual Communications 3Professor: Mark Cichy

14

The Windrunner is a conceptual design that uses a breezeway to supply cross ventilation and ample natural daylighting across an open concept interior. In the spirit of a nomadic lifestyle the Windrunner is as adaptable as the user needs it to be, a table can become a peice of the floor and the bed can be retracted into the roof freeing up the space below.

HOUSE FOR A COMPOSER1A Small Scale HouseFall 2009Design StudioProfessor: Rick Andrighetti

18

As a seasonal home for different composers, the layout is as open and adapt-able as possible. The house can transform into a performance space simply by opening up the several sliding glass walls that look out onto the court. The court-yard plays an important role in the overall shceme of the house, acting as the main ‘audience’ space by creating an almost amphitheatre like effect at the heart of the home.

Both of these peices are expressionistic statements on the purpose of choice and the journey that such a simple concept can lead us on. Certain choices can open up infintie possibili-ties for us. While some of them may lead us to a dead end, others can open doors to new and exciting experiences.
