Seniors and Youth Working Hand-in-Hand!!

Our seniors day program is making baby blankets for First Steps

Housing. “First Steps” provides safe housing for young moms and

pregnant women. Also, in conjunction with the program the

Quispamsis Girl Guide troop came in to visit & entertain our

residents and with the scraps from the blankets they helped make

dog toys that will be sold in support of the SPCA.

A Friendly Reminder

The sun is out and so are the children playing in

the playground! Please slow down and take

your time in the parking lot and the long drive

way to Squire Drive. Our residents may be out

walking/wheeling and many of them will want

to see the playground.

Bulk Food Purchasing Program

Why buy in Bulk??? There are many benefits – specialty items that are

not available at a retail store and the cost savings!! If you have

sampled a particular food item at a restaurant or at one of our parties, chances are

you can order it in bulk to try at home.

1. Please contact Ruth McQuinn at 847-1131 x2446 for further details.

2. Orders placed and paid for by Friday afternoon will be delivered on the

following Monday.

4. If quantities are too large, please consider sharing with a friend or co-worker.

Another wonderful example of what a great

family the Kings Way Care Centre staff &

residents are, is their willingness to give.

With more and more food being sent out to

our Centennial School families each month,

some staff members have stepped up and are

donating amazing foods for our residents to pack in the back packs! Those

of you who have already donated, we thank you from the bottom of our

hearts. If you are interested in donating here are some items to consider:

bagels, loaves of bread, crackers & cheese, packages of dry noodles, cans

of pasta sauce, apple sauce, pudding, minute rice, juice boxes, fruit such as

raisins, apples, oranges, clementines and vegetables such as carrot sticks

and celery sticks.

On the last Thursday of each month,

Kings Way Care Centre residents fill

backpacks for children, whose families

are in need, ensuring that they will have

food for the weekend.

The Eden Alternative - It Can Be Different

The Eden Alternative Philosophy of Care is guided by a set of Ten Principles.

This month we will explore Principle #5, the 3rd of the Antidote Principles.

We hope you are enjoying these informative tidbits on Eden!

The Eden Alternative Principle #5

An Elder-centered community imbues daily life with variety and spontaneity by

creating an environment in which unexpected and unpredictable interactions and

happenings can take place. This is the antidote to boredom.

With 70 -75 people living in one "house", a certain amount of routine and predictability creates

a good environment for people with cognitive-communication impairment. Routine gives

residents an opportunity to improve independence and safety. However, without variety people

may start to disengage. There is a balance that must be achieved.

Staff, volunteers and families all need to create environments where everyone can find the

variety and spontaneity they need to fill the empty moments of the day. We need to be equipped

to be in the moment and not just focused on checking off our list of tasks for the day. It

takes trust and it takes strong relationships. Welcoming the community through activities

and entertainment; visiting families, pets and children; and simply being open to the

unexpected makes for daily spontaneity. Unexpected and unpredictable interactions and

happenings can take place naturally. This plague is hard for us busy adults to understand

sometimes. Being bored sounds really good at times, but imagine if you were never able to

end the day saying "you'll never believe what happened today" again? Would that be a life

worth living? Even in our boredom, we still have lots of variety and spontaneity. We just need

to create that same experience for the Elders at our homes.

Three things we can all do to help promote variety and spontaneity:

1. Recognize the value of variety and spontaneity and find ways to cultivate them

2. Remain flexible when spontaneous events interrupt regular schedules

3. Appreciate and enjoy these elements when they occur rather than just tolerate them or be

"thrown for a loop" when they happen
