G'day again folks and welcome to the Schoolies issue of the Kuta WeeklyBali's Premier Weekly Newspaper and isn't it great to see the youngAustralians traipsing around town with Bintang tank tops on, holding theobligatory green bottles with almost all being adorned with a tattoo ofsome sort. I find it strange that the youngies of today seem to think it's aright of passage to have a tattoo and the number of young women withthem is astounding. It's ok when they are young and have skin that youcan bounce a fifty cent from, and yes it looks great, however what

happens when the skin loses its ping and the forces of gravity start to take effect ?? I think in years to come unlessthese chicks try to keep themselves in good shape they will end up doing their best to keep their body covered upfor no one to ever see. I imagine that wouldn't be a great way to grow old and raise kids Mummy why don't youwant to swim with me at the beach HHHmmmmm food for thought. So for now we can only enjoy and appreciatethe tattoos that are on the island at the minute and be thankfull that they are having absolutely no problem with notcovering up while they frolic in the pools and enjoy the beach. I find no greater pleasure than to enjoy the innocentcompany of a young person that has just finished a few hard years of study and exams and is on the island to partyand is doing their best to be a grown up. The words of wisdom that you hear when you listen to a schoolie talk aboutwhat they plan to do in the immediate future are great. Some just want to travel for a few years then knuckle downinto work and start their lives with others (usually the girls) wanting to get home and start grinding at a careerstraight away. They have the most innocent ideals and after hearing these stories a few times I have actually lea rntto just listen. I have made quite a few long term, very good friends from Schoolies that have travelled to Bali for theend of year break up which I have met over the years here on the island.

For the amount of friends that I have made over those years that are or have been schoolies, I reckon there wouldhave to be at least a thousand times as many drunken usless, foolish stupid immature other schoolies that I havewatched act in a manner befitting to an animal and actually, come to think about it, I don't think I have seen ananimal act as stupid. Some of them come to Bali and just lose the plot. They say most che ck in at the airport andcheckout their brains. The media back home absolutely bashes the crap out of Bali and these crazy Schoolies don'tdo anything to help, as they just keep on being stupid and driving the media bandwagon that constantly bashesBali. I don't like to see the island slammed any more than the next guy (excluding Squirtell and his rambles onoccasion) but seriously if you are a School leaver and you happen to stay sober enough to read this blog, Please tryto represent Australia in a manner that is befitting to Australians. The people of Bali are a humble lot and don't needyou to remind them that your mummy and daddy gave you more to spend on this trip than they earn in 6 months.Anyone who gets a kick out of saying this to a hard working Balinese should be taken to the airport and sent home. The only reason that these people even entertain you is because they want to earn the money. Do you think that anynormal working person that you know would put up with you drinking yourself into oblivion then abusingeveryone you come across, then jumping into a taxi and vomiting everywhere. You wouldn't do it in Australia so Iquestion why the stupid few would do it here.

There is a volunteer crew that comes to Bali each year and works with the police, consulate and many hotels to tryand keep the behaviour of the schoolies at an acceptable level and help any of them that may find themselves introuble. They do a great job and they are c alled the Red Frog crew. You cansee their info on page 28 which we are happy to sponsor to help make Balisafe for the many Schoolies that come here. Ok folks that's about my lot forthis week so I will leave you all to ponder and enjoy until next week. I trust themost of you stay safe, happy, healthy and always do your best to remember,Stay real, Stay Loyal or Stay Away From Me,

    Enjoy Your Week,ALIASJ.

    Reducing Fatal Snakebites in IndonesiaIndonesia Needs to Developa R a n g e o f P o i s o n o u sSnakebite Serum Vaccines

Dr. Tri Mahawani, an expert insnake bites and toxicology from theDoc to r Ramlan Hosp i t a l i nSurabaya (East Java) , told

Metrobali.com that Indonesia needsto develop monovalent vaccines asantidotes for poisonoussnake bite.

D r. M a h a w a n i , aspecialist in the emergencytreatment of snake bites, said: At this time Indonesiaonly has a polyvalent snakevenom serum (SABU) used totreat all types of snake bites, but not monovalent varietiesto be used in the treatment ofbites from specific poisonoussnake species even thoughmonvalent serums have beenproven very effective.

    The doctor said that

    m e d i c a l p e r s o n n e l i nIndonesia need to undergotraining to understand theentire range of snake venomsin order to use monovalentvaccines effectively.

This is the focus of ourattention, because at this point thereare only 27 people (in Indonesia)with a sub-specialty in snake bitesand I am the only doctors with aspecialty in toxicology, explainedDr. Mahawani.

The doctor went on to exposethat snakebites in Indonesia are a

frequent occurrence. Base ondata gathered between 2011-2014form hospitals in five cities (Malang,Surabaya, Serang, Batam andMerauke) there were more than 200cases of snakebites each year with40% of the cases proving fatal.

This total, explained Dr.Mahawani, may be higher because

only cases treated at hospitals wererecorded, while those at communitymedical centers (Puskesmas) aresometimes not recorded.

Because of this, Dr. Mahawaniis working with The IndonesianInstitute of Sciences (LIPI) andBiofarma to develop monovalentvaccine serums that will form part ofa 2015 national science

competition. We are seekingto win the prize of 500 million rupiah(US$41,600) to pay for researchover the coming five years, shesaid.

The monovalent serumvaccines that will be developed bythe team will be for the specific typesof poisonous snakes found in

Indonesia necessarilydifferent f rom thosecurrently produced inTha i l and , Ma lays i a ,Singapore and Australia.

    Con t i nu ing , Dr.Maharani said, We hopethat (Indonesian) medicalpersonnel will possessknowledge, skills andnetworks in handlings n a k e b i t e s t h e r e b yincreasing the number ofthose saved from deathr e s u l t i n g f r o msnakebites.

T o i m p r o v enetworking, Mahawaniand her team will launch inDecember accounts in thesocial media for thediscussion of how to

handle snakebites and socialize theuse of monovalent serum vaccinesfor use by practitioners, academicsand the general public to seekinganswersm on questions aboutpoisonous snake bites.

Auss ies pip Proteas in f inal one dayer Aus tral ia retur ned to the top of the worl d oneday rankings after survivi ng a dramatic latebatting collapse to beat South Africa by twowick ets at the SCG on Sunday.

The tense victory sealed a 4 to 1 series win for Australia as they build momentum to the World Cupwhich starts in less than three months.

A classy 82 from ShaneWatson, a superb 76 fromopener from Aaron Finch, featuring several coverdrives and Steve Smith's 67looked to have laid theplatform for a comfortablevictory as the hosts lookedwell set to reach their rainadjusted target of 275.

But an inspired spell ofbowling by left-arm spinnerRobin Peterson (4 for 32)saw Australia slump from 4for 264 to 8 for 267 beforeJames Faulkner (6) hit the winning runs a t the start ofthe final over.Watson hit two sixes and seven fours to

show some timely form with the Test side for theopening match against India in Brisbane onDecember 4 named on Monday. But the 33 year oldmissed out on a century when he tried to take onMorne Morkel once too often and was caught at deepmid wicket by Rilee Roussow.

Smith, who hit a match winning century at theMCG last Friday and an unbeaten 76 in the thirdmatch in Canberra, was handed a reprieve on 20when he was called back to the crease after beingbowled by a Kyle Abbott delivery that was a noball. But it was another excellent all round display

from the Sydneysider, who earlier grabbed thewicket of David Miller and took a fine catch to dismissFarhann Behardien.

However, Glenn Maxwell, George Bailey andMatthew Wade would not have enhanced theirchances by playing reckless shots to put their side introuble. An excellent 107 from South Africa opener

Quinton de Kock and somepowerful lower order battingfrom Behardien (63) helpedthe Proteas finish on 6 for 280.

    After a strong start thet o u r i s t s ' m i d d l e o r d e rstruggled against somedisciplined bowling, slumpingfrom 2 for 164 to 5 for 206 withPat Cummins continuing hisgood form with figures of 3 for54.Watson said he was happyto hit some form with the bathaving not scored a 50 in oneday internationals for morethan a year.

"It's not a great stat, is it? But it was nice get

some runs, for sure," Watson said. "I've not playedtoo much one day cricket over the last year and it wasnice to see the good work I have been putting in to allcome together.

Proteas skipper AB De Villiers, who missed thegame due to a rib problem, said his side was hurtingafter losing the series by such a wide margin and hisbowlers needed to improve their discipline. Ten noballs across the course of the series cost his sidedearly.De Villiers wants the problem cleared upbefore the start of the World Cup."It's unacceptableand it shouldn't happen, it's not good enough, hesaid.

Lewis Hamilton wraps up world titl e number 2.Lewis Hamilton is King of theTrack again. Under the dark sk yof Abu Dhabi, fireworks greetedthe 29 year old Stevenage boyturned global superstar as onlythe fourth Briton to win multipleFormula One world titles.

The fourth in line to anotherthrone, Prince Harry, went to the pitwall to tell Hamilton over the radioLewis, thank you very, very much fornot making the British public sweat. You are an absolute legend. Welldone, mate.

The team then came on to tellHamilton he was Mercedes Benz'sfirst champion since a chap calledJuan Manuel Fangio, in 1955. Fangiowas the greatest of them all, butHamilton is hardly a slouch.

The build-up to the racewas tense. Would Hamilton holdon to his lead of 17 points, orwould Nico Rosberg spoil hisday? But it was, as HRHobserved, all in control longbefore the 55th and concludinglap. So much so that Rosberg, suffering battery problems, waslapped by Hamilton on thepenultimate circuit. Hamiltontook the victory, with Rosberg14th, and the title by 67 points.Double scoring, the great prerace fear, was immaterial.Andwhen it was over, Rosbergsought Hamilton out and held him, congratulating a friend who hasturned into a bitter rival in the course ofa captivating nine months. It was atypically gracious gesture from thevanquished man.

As for Hamilton, his name canbe added to Graham Hill, Jim Clarkand Sir Jackie Stewart in the

pantheon of British double titlewinners . S ix years separa teH a m i l t o n ' s f i r s t a n d s e c o n dchampionships , but now thegreatness he promised as a rookie ofprodigious gifts has been rewarded asrichly as his talent warrants. The racehad been set up perfectly by Rosbergsearing to pole position by 0.386sec.Saturday has been the German's dayfor most of the year.

But it is Sunday that counts andHamilton took little more than a blink

of an eye to roar into thelead.Rosberg trundled off the grid.Hamilton powered ahead, swept to hisright in front of his colleague and flewthrough the first left-hand corner. Bythe time Rosberg came round it,Hamilton was virtually in Dubai, oranother planet. All weekend Hamiltonhad exhibited tell tale jitters, givenexasperated answers in pressconferences and issued falseprotestations about being cooler thanan ice cold bintang on a hot Baliafternoon.

    Al l th os e wo rr ie s we redispatched to the file marked 'i' fori r r e l e v a n c e i n o n e f a u l t l e s smove.From that moment, theoutcome seemed inevitable. And thatis rare with Hamilton, a man who hasproduced more drama over the years

than ITV. Still, how must it have felt forHamilton's family who were late, surprise arrivals in Abu Dhabi.

His father Anthony paced upand down, as his wont. His pop stargirlfriend Nicole Scherzinger, stepmother Linda and brother Nic, in aMercedes top, were all in the garage, their eyes fixed on the timingscreens. But before the sun had set, inthe twilight of this dusk to night race,H a m i l t o n h a d e s t a b l i s h e d acomfortable lead. By his first stop, 10laps in, his advantage was 2.7sec.Rosberg stayed out a lap longer but itdid him no good on rubber that wasonly getting worse.

Rosberg's engineer Tony Rosscame over the radio to explain theirremedial strategy Keep the gap tohim (Hamilton) manageable and we'llgo long. But within minutes, theGerman veered off track. That was

was about to suffer with hisenergy recovery system (ERS).Hamilton came in for new tyres as hisown time was briefly dippingScherzinger's bottom lip quivered, buthe only needed to be re-shod.

He came out and zoomedstraight past Rosberg, who had yet topit again. Both men were totally fairand clean. Hamilton was away. NowRosberg had just one chance, namely,to score heavily enough to take thetitle if Hamilton were to stop.

Just get me into the top five orsix as safely as possible, he said.

Actually, he would have needed fifth tohave had a hope in hell. How am Ilooking?, he inquired, while lyingseventh and fading. Not good at themoment, he was told. What the helldoes that mean? What do I need to

do?. Just drive flat out. It wastruly the most pathetic exchangeof the season.

But it was not the last of itssort. Hey guys, what's goingon? he asked. The car

switched off and now the throttleis all over the place. Get mybrake pedal back now please.Rosberg was told to retire, butvowed to drive on regardless.Felipe Massa tried hard to catchHamilton but he had to settle forsecond, a place ahead of hisWilliams team-mate ValtteriBottas. So the glory went to

Hamilton, and who can say he did notdeserve it? He is an extraordinaryBritish sportsman at something likethe peak of his powers. His 11 wins toRosberg's five is a fair reflection of hissuperiority.

He can be moody. His jewelry isnot to everyone's taste. But there is nodenying sheer ability when you areprivileged enough to see itfirst hand.He has also worked hard, carvingthrough the field after the bugler hadsounded the Last Post at the end ofseveral qualifying sessions.

    A m a r k o f H a m i l t o n ' sachievement is that he beat Rosberg,who, through dedicat ion andwillpower, made his talent go evenfurther than nature intended.

But, as in their karting days, itended up with Lewis Hamilton P1,Nico Rosberg P2.

    Mr Myles said yesterday: We

I would say America was myfavorite purely because it is Englishspeaking.

However, he added: It isexpensive in New York. We spent4,500 just to get in and sit at a table inone place in New York. We gotsmashed.

For his birthday in September,Mr Myles briefly returned to Herefordfor a Great Gatsby-themed party for350 people, complete with

Hindu people in Bali perform rituals to prayfor their safety and prosperity. These rituals arealso a representation of honour, perpetuation,

and protection. One of the rituals is Tumpek Uduhceremony. Also known as Tumpek Wariga, tumpek bubuh, tumpek pengatag, and tumpekpengarah, Tumpek Uduh is held 25 day beforeGalungan (a holy day celebrated once every 210days on Balinese calendar).

Tumpek Uduh is the day to worship thegod of vegetation, celebrated as ceremonialevent of blessing trees with porridge and otherofferings. The sacred ritual aims to remind peopleof how important plants are as their staple foodsource. The ritual also reflects human pleas forGods guidance in growing and keeping plants.

Offerings in Tumpek Uduh are presentedto God (Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa) inmanifestation of Sangkara (god of vegetation). InHindu concept, Sangkara is believed to be theone who creates plants for human needs. Asgratitude and appreciation to Him, humans mustlove all kinds of plants. Tumpek Uduh is anappreciation for harmony, for harmony letshumans live their lives in this world, somethinghumans have to be grateful for.

Honour ing and apprec ia t ing themotherland, especially the plants, are the ways forhumans to love nature and surr oundings becausehumans cannot live without them. Plants give lifeto humans, as most human needs come fromplants, like food, shelter, and clothing. That is thereason for devoting Tumpek Uduh as the day forplants.

The celebration of Tumpek Uduh does notpropose Balis nature only; it celebrates the entireworlds. Tumpek Uduh has been held for a longtime, even before the emergence of awareness ofpreserving nature and the environment, before thebeginning of Earth Day, before December wascommemorated as the national month of tree

planting. Balinese local wisdom of appreciatingplants is an inherited tradition. However, nowadays rituals and traditions

are simply done as ceremonies. In fact, Balicontinues having environmental issues, such asunstoppable natural exploitation. The rituals canbe viewed as superficial instruments followed byno-action-talk-only. In order to give a contextual, total , deeper meaning to the r i tuals ,reactualization of Balinese traditional wisdom isvery essential. Therefore, Tumpek Uduh shouldbe able to bring up this reactualization.

Be careful, though, as amisunderstanding could backfire on you. You'll be feelinggenerous and eager to splurge on yourself and others. Don'tforget to put some money to aside to help shore up yoursavings. You are truly in your element and ready to take the world bystorm this week. A bright and very sociable focus on yoursign suggests you'll be personally involved in launchingplans, sharing ideas, and organizing get-togethers andother events as the excitement builds around Thanksgiving. When it comes to finances, this is an excellent time to planahead. You're naturally generous by nature, but you may bequite frugal when it comes to purchasing life's little luxuriesfor yourself.

On the one hand, you'll be busy organizing and getting thingstogether. At the same time, a very marked focus on yourspiritual sector encourages you to relax and recharge daily.Use this opportunity to remember the year and how muchyou've accomplished. If you feel you've made mistakes, this isyour chance to reflect on how you might have done thingsbetter. You also have a chance to prioritize your goals, enabling you to zero in on those that inspire you most.

This is a fabulous time to expand your social horizons, movein new circles, and generally mix and mingle with peoplewho both inspire and entertain. The coming week can beexcellent for enhancing romantic opportunities, especially ifyou're looking for love. However, as both Saturn andMercury link with Neptune, it pays to be careful, as all thatglitters isn't necessarily gold. Later, Mercury edges intoSagittarius, making this the perfect time to network in orderto enhance business interests.

With Thanksgiving Day drawing closer, you'll be in your elementas your extended family shows up at your door. A focus on yourhome zone suggests you might be getting some unexpected yetvery welcome visitors, some of whom might be staying a while.Mars in Capricorn spotlights your organizing ability andencourages you to draw up plans and begin the preparations.None of this seems like work - more like the best fun ever! Thingsare about to get exciting!

With lucky Jupiter in your work sector and a fabulous lineup inyour career zone, things seem to be going your way this week. The cosmos encourages you to take a leap of faith, especially ifyou've been considering trying for a new job or expanding yourbusiness along other lines. It helps to get practical advice fromthose who have experience in what you're hoping to achieve. They may be able to save you time and money and help yousucceed more quickly.

Spiderbait are an Australian alternative rock bandformed in Finley, a small town in rural New South Wales, in1989 by bass guitarist Janet English, singer-drummerMark Maher (better known as Kram), and guitarist DamianWhitty. In 2004 the group's cover version of the 1930sLead Belly song "Black Betty" reached number one on the

ARIA Singles Chart. They have five top 20 albums: TheUnfinished Spanish Galleon of Finley Lake (1995), Ivy andthe Big Apples (1996), Grand Slam (1999), Tonight Alright(2004), and Greatest Hits (2005). The group have won two

ARIA Music Awards with the first in 1997 as 'Best Alternative Release' for Ivy and the Big Apples and thesecond in 2000 as 'Best Cover Art' for their single"Glokenpop". Since late 2004, the band has been onhiatus to concentrate on solo projects and their personallives although periodically returning for occasional gigs. The band released their first studio album in nine years, the self-titled Spiderbait in November 2013.

Early years In 1989, the three future members of

Spiderbait were performing together with Janet English onbass guitar and lead vocals, Mark Maher (better known asKram) on leadv o c a l s a n dd r u m s , a n dDamian Whitty(or "Whitt") onguitar. All grewup in the smalltown of Finley insouthern NewSouth Walesw h e r e K r a mand his second

cousin Whitty jammed together as schoolboys. WithEnglish on board, early rehearsals were held in sheds orbarns, Kram later recalled: "we were shithouse! We wereso bad ... I mean Janet had never played a note of music inher life". Kram taught English to play bass. Initial gigsincluded a friend's party as an unnamed b and where theyplayed "Freak Scene" and an AC/DC cover song. Theyperformed at the combined 21st birthday party for Kramand Whitty under the name Candy Spuds. They used thatname for only one gig and then used Spiderbaby.

In 1990, the trio moved to Melbourne, where Kram wasstudying at the Victorian College of the Arts School ofMusic. They soon became part of Melbourne's punkscene, playing gigs at venues like The Tote Hotel inCollingwood. Fellow alternative rockers The Meanies

The album reached number 14 on the Australiancharts, with singles "Monty" (September) and "Jesus"receiving extensive airplay on radio station Triple J. Thealbum title refers to a then-unfinished project by the Finley

Australian g roup to do so. In October 1996, the grouptoured Canada and played gigs in Los Angeles, New York, and Seattle in the US. The album's third single, "Calypso",

also achieved commercial airplay, and reached number13 in the ARIA Singles Chart in June 1997.
