Introducing Kumera Active Drive™Kumera’s commitment to research
and development is continuously resulting to new products and
solutions. Latest achievement of Kumera’s R&D team is a new
drive solution for girth gear applications. The solution has been
named as KAD, which stands for Kumera Active Drive™.
KAD is designed to ensure optimal load distribution on girth
gear teeth throughout years of operation without a need for high
accuracy alignment. This compact solution utilizes the full load
capacity of the valuable girth ring while providing maximum
usability and serviceability with minimum space requirements.
Conventional girth gear drives have significantly high demands
when it comes to alignment accuracy. When
KUMERA Active Drive™ is utilized, the only accurate dimensional
requirement needed at installation is the tooth backlash. The
lateral alignment tolerance is as rough as 3 mm / 100 mm.
KUMERA Active Drive™ independently optimizes the tooth contact
by constantly modifying the alignment of the drive unit. This
enables girth gear load ratings that are unreachable for
conventional drives.
Allowed by the exquisite structure of KUMERA Active Drive™, a
user friendly backlash adjustment system is integrated to the drive
unit. Adjustment is performed simply by rotating a single
adjustment screw. The resulting backlash can be calculated in
relation to revolutions of the adjustment screw.
Turnkey Delivery for Limestone Kiln in FinlandIn the middle of
2013 Kumera was selected as a supplier to modernize demanding
limestone kiln drive system in Southern Finland. The nearly 80
meters long kiln with diameter 3,3 meters had 20 years old drive
system with all the components approaching the end of the life
cycle.
Environment issues, easy maintenance and high efficiency were
the key issues when selecting and designing the new drive unit.
Instead of having all the components on separate foundations Kumera
designed the new drive system so that the main pinion is located
directly on the low speed shaft of the main
gearbox. As well the auxiliary drive with diesel engine and
necessary couplings and brakes were integrated to the main gearbox.
This design enables easier adjustment of the main gear teeth
contact. No other alignments are needed when the whole drive
package can be lifted and adjusted as one unit.
Girth Gears from Kumera ChinaKumera has met yet another
milestone in the development of its operation in Kunshan, China.

Finland and investment to advanced 5-axiles CNC machine center,
Kumera China is now able to manufacture and deliver complete Girth
Gear applications. The delivery capacity today includes complete
package from girth gear and main drives to lubrication system,
auxiliary drives, clutch, brake and coupling.

Drum Pulper Gear Production Start-up in Kumera ChinaRPV-2x425Z
was the first totally new product to have production ramp-up in
China without previous manufacturing experience from Kumera’s
European locations.
Two different using positions and size of the gear unit made
assembly and the test run more challenging than for the standard
gear units. Global specialist team was in place for assembly and
test run. The casting housings for RPV-2x425Z were the largest
manufactured by Kumera China with a total width of 2490mm and
weight of 1,65 tons. The gearwheels and shafts, including the heat
treatment and special teeth form requirements were produced
according to proven Kumera standard processes.

Meeting IMO Emission Standards with Kumera Marine Green
Drive™
Kumera AS is contracted by Vard Brevik and the Norwegian tow
boat company Buksér og Berging AS to develop,
engineer, test and deliver a 2-step main propulsion
mechanical
transmission with multiple power take offs. The new invention is
instrumental in Buksér
og Berging’s strategy to meet the International Maritime
Organization’s (IMO) rules for reduced NOx /SOx emissions in 2016
with developments based on traditional mechanical solutions.
The drive is designed to employ the two diesels separately one
at the time or in parallel giving maximum power transmitted. The
main transmission is 3.4m in width weighing about 8 ton each.
The Kumera scope of supply for Buksér og Berging AS includes a
port and starboard mechanical power transmission. The delivery is
scheduled for mid-September 2014. The know-how and technology of
making gears for twin engines have rested with Kumera for many
years with many reference projects.
Kumera Hydraulic Clutch serie ranging upKumera develops new
hydraulically engaged clutches to cover needs of new Kumera AS’s
marine Green Drive. New types scale up to range of the current
NKH-clutch serie. Nominal torques for the new clutches are 30 and
65 kNm. Design is made in co-operation between Kumera Norway and
Finland. New clutches will be used in the main propulsion line.
Handling of the thermal loads, cooling, controlled engaging
disengaging and wear are the key issues to fulfill the high
requirements of the new Green Drive. New clutches will pass heavy
endurance tests before accepted to use in ships propulsion
line.
Kumera Gearbox to Gasturbine at Helsingin Energia Power
Plant
The power plant operates as a national disturbance reserve and
is an important part of preparing for the need of rapid disturbance
reserve. The stand-by power plant uses fuel oil to produce
electricity and the capability is 120MW. The use of the gearbox is
to transmit the power from diesel engine to the turbine during the
startup. Between the diesel engine and main gearbox there is
already Kumera LX-gearbox raising the diesel engine rotation speed
to the correct level.
The delivery scope of the contract is the main gearbox with
installation. The base of the gearbox is welded steel structure
housing. Because of the high diameter and high rotation speed of
the shafts, all the shafts are supported with tailor made sliding
bearings. All the gearwheels are using double helical toothing to
allow the maximal transmittable torque and to avoid the axial
loads. All the tooth contacts are pressure lubricated to ensure the
proper lubrication and to
transfer the heat. This maximizes the teeth lifetime. Sliding
bearings are also pressure lubricated and they are equipped with
separate high pressure support oil flow to allow the low speed
rotation.
Gearbox is epuipped with connection for the existing auxiliary
drive, which allows the gearbox to be used with low rotation speed
to cool and rotate the turbine after the use or for the maintenance
work. The input shaft is
