Ask somebody who knows all about it
Pumps are the main energy users in the industry, while almost every pump drive requires a coupling compensating
or shat misalignment and reducing vibrations causing problems. The coupling can have a major inuence both
on the operating expenses and the service lie o the pump. This is why KTR have extended their product range,
specifcally or pump drives, in recent times, so that they now oer the pump industry a ull portolio o torsionally
exible and torsionally rigid shat couplings, covering very high torque ranges.
Product Manager or the pump industry
For customers requiring a qualifed, technical support and
advisory service, wishing to purchase couplings rom one
single source, we have dedicated product managers or the
pump industry. As a result o this, we not only oer consul-
tation, but detailed support with the selection o the correct
coupling. KTR has sixty specialists working in our design
& engineering department using the latest CAD sotware
which enables us to design customers bespoke solutions
in a matter o hours. KTRs test bench is available or the
testing o entire drive systems including pumps. KTRs in-
ternational presence in every main industrial market assu-
res that users throughout the world get immediate support
whenever necessary.
Perect ft or every size
In addition to our extensive standard range o products, we
develop thousands o customised solutions every year. The
compact, maintenance-ree KTR couplings are used on
every kind o pumps, either or uid or gaseous media, on
vacuum pumps and compressors. Our range o applications
covers everything rom small water pumps to huge irrigating
plants and large turbines. They are also used in nuclear po-
wer stations, with LCD production and isocyanate oaming
processes. Last but not least KTR is one o the leading ma-
nuacturers o shat couplings or the chemical industry.

Our quality management system has been certifed since
1993 to DIN EN ISO 9001 now DIN EN ISO 9000-2000
our environmental management is in accordance with DIN
EN ISO 14001. This means that our couplings have not on-
lybeen tested or quality, saety and environmental compa-
tability, but also satisy the requirements or all preparations
starting with the correct selection o the products and the
reliable handling o orders. In addition, we have approvalsrom most o the main classifcation approval companies.
In our Research and Development Centre we are testing
new products to determine their technical parameters.
Based on such parameters we reproduce simulations o
torsional vibrations that are particularly important or pumps
and compressors. Our inhouse sotware ensures a sae se-
lection o the couplings. It goes without saying that the KTR
couplings correspond to the special requirements o the
pump industry, in particular API 610, 671 and 685.
KTR is actively associated with governing associations, or
example with the introduction o the ATEX product standard
94/9/EC, well-known as ATEX 95. The standard defnes
the use o products in ame-proo areas. We are here to
support you, to make sure that you adhere to every saety
standard and to advise you o the necessary markings. The

z For Pumps:
The torsionally exible jaw coupling ROTEX, the short,
axial plug-in, torsionally exible, ailsae jaw coupling
POLY-NORM and the non-ailsae POLY coupling as well
as the torsionally rigid, backlash-ree steel lamina couplings
RADEX-N and RIGIFLEX-N. The double-cardanic design
was developed particularly or pump drives. It corresponds
to API 610 or 671 and accepts temperatures between
-30 C and 280 C thanks to its all-steel design. For a non-contact torque transmission in pumps or aggressive and
toxic media the permanent magnetic coupling MINEX is
used. DATAFLEX has proven its worth as an accurate
measuring device or development and quality assurance.

z Innovations and special designs
Pump drives oten require compensation or large shat
displacements, particularly when delivering hot media. This
compensation cannot be guaranteed by single-cardanic
couplings, but only by double-cardanic couplings like
ROTEX ZS-DKM-H which was specifcally developed or
pump drives. This coup ling, which can be disassembled,
is able to compensate or high shat displacements, whilst
at the same time transmitting the torque saely and in this
way increasing the overall service lie o all adjacent compo-
nents and reducing the lie cycle costs (LCC) considerably.Since the shell hubs can be assembled -and disassembled
by means o 4 screws, ROTEX ZS-DKM-H in addition
acilitates the service.
Thanks to our wide range o spider elastomers, the jaw
couplings ROTEX and POLY-NORM meet with numerous
dierent demands. The latest materials are characterised by
highest temperature resistance and excellent resistance to
wear. They are resistant to hydrolysis and chemicals and
have excellent emergency running properties.
Another specifc type is ROTEX FNN with a an either

temperatures. This solution acilitates the assembly, saves
space and cost.
The use o new technologies allows us to oer special types
o steel lamina couplings RADEX-N and RIGIFLEX-N with
highly sti GFK or CFK spacers. This allows us to bridge
large shat distances without causing any weight problems
they are ideal or use on large pumps in irrigation systems.
Most suitable or high torques is the torsionally exible,
ailsae pin & bush coupling REVOLEXKX which can be
used up to 400.000 Nm. It can be plugged in axially and
is extremely short so that it is able to meet very short shat
distance dimensions. REVOLEX KX compensates or axial,
radial and angular shat misalignment. Its elastomer ringsare resistant to petrol and oils and can be replaced whilst
still assembled.
Looking ahead Creating the uture!
The new BoWex GT coupling is closing the gaps between
applications within the pump industry. The new coupling
combines the advantages o the BoWex curved-tooth gear
coupling, customer approved or more than 50 years, with a
constructive novelty: a split sleeve - consisting o two shells.
This allows a new method o disassembly or maintenance
purposes. At the same time, the BoWex GT still achieves a
much higher capacity o radial displacements than conventio-nal products, inline with the double-cardanic principles o the
standard BoWex coupling design.

the right drive components, e. g. the new RIGIFLEX-HP
high-perormance coupling by KTR. Specifcally developed
or use in high-speed drive trains, RIGIFLEX
-HP con-fdently takes on the biggest o challenges your demand!
Brute orces acting reasonably
... means that the new RIGIFLEX-HP high-perormance
coupling operates as a backlash-ree component. As a
torsionally sti, low-maintenance all-steel coupling this
new design combines maximum stiness with the high-
est possible exibility which is ideal or ast-running drives
where high torque transmission and compensation or shatdisplacements is required. This makes RIGIFLEX-HP the
ideal coupling or all types o gas and steam turbines, high-
speed pump drives, turbo compressors, boiler speed pumps
and generators. Accordingly, suitable applications also in-
clude power station and energy technology, petro-chemistry,
marine technology as well as mining and tunnel building.
With standing the pressure up to 500 bar
High-power compressors oten operate at up to several
hundred bar compressed air. In particular, start shocks can
result in extreme loads and high uctuations in torque which
must be handled competently without damaging the overallsystem. This is where the new RIGIFLEX-HP proves its
worth: oering stability and exibility at the same time. No
matter whether its oil-ree pistons, screw or pendular piston
compressors, industrial gas or processed air compressors,
plunger or turbo compressors: RIGIFLEX-HP confdently
handles and excels under pressure!

Coupling selection steel laminae coupling
1. Permissible displacements:
Ka: Permissible axial displacementKw: Permissible angular displacementKr: Permissible radial displacement
The steel laminae couplings are selected in a way that the maxi-mum permissible angular excursion Kw may be compensated byevery laminae set. Consequently the maximum permissible angularexcursion of two shafts combined with each other is 2 Kw. The
maximum angular excursion or each laminae set is shown in thetable Technical capacity utilization.
Angular displacement
The permissible radial displacement Kr with distance g o the cou-pling elements is
Kr = g tan (Kw)
Radial displacement
In the table Technical data (RADEX-N page 20/21 andRIGIFLEX-N page 15/16) you can see the max. permissible radialdisplacements Kr or every size and type based on the given stan-dard lengths o the ange hollow shat as well as the permissibleangular displacement Kw o the coupling elements. The max. permissible axial displacements Ka or every size andtype are also mentioned in the table Technical data. The fgureso the permissible displacements indicated are dependent on each
other! With an increasing axial displacement Ka the permissible angu-lar displacement Kw decreases and thus the radial displacement
Kr. (See our mounting instructions www.ktr.com).

Selection o the coupling size
3. Drives with periodic torsional vibrations
For drives subject to dangerous torsional vibrations (e. g. dieselengines, piston compressors, piston pumps, generators, etc.) it is
necessary to perorm a torsional vibration calculation (please con-sult with our Engineering Department).3.1 Loading by rated torque
Taking into account the operating actor SB, directional actor SRand temperature actor St, the permissible rated speed must be atleast as large as the rated torque TN o the machine. The nominal torque TKN o the coupling is:
TKN TN SB St SR
TN = Torque o the machineSB = Operating actor (see table page 12)SR= Factor o direction (1,00=same torque direction;1,70=changing torque direction)
St = Operating temperature Temperature actor

3.2 Passing through resonance
The peak torque TSR arising while passing through resonance mustnot exceed the permissible maximum torque o the coupling TKmax.
TKmax TSR
3.3 Loading by vibratory torque
The permissible vibratory torque o the coupling TKW must notbe exceeded by the maximum periodic vibratory torque o themachine TW.
TKW TW
Selection o the coupling size
2. Drives without periodic torsional vibrations
For example centriugal pumps, ans, screw compressors, etc. Thecoupling selection requires that the rated torque TKN and the maxi-
mum torque TKmax are reviewed.
2.1 Loading by rated torque
Taking into account the operating actor SB, directional actor SRand temperature actor St, the permissible rated speed must be atleast as large as the rated torque TN o the machine.
The nominal torque TKN o the coupling is:
TKN TN SB St SR
TN = Torque o the machineSB = Operating actor (see table page 12)SR= Factor o direction (1,00=same torque direction;
1,70=changing torque direction)St = Operating temperature Temperature actor

Factor 1,00 1,00 1,00 1,10 1,25 1,43
2.2 Loading by torque shocks
The permissible maximum torque TKmax o the coupling must beat least as high as the sum o the peak torque TS and rated tor-que TN o the machine taking into account the operating actorSB, temperature actor St and directional actor SR. This is valid incase that the rated torque o the machine is super-imposed by ashock (e. g. starting o the engine). For drives with A. C. motors andlarge masses on the load side we would recommend calculationsby our simulation programme (please consult with our EngineeringDepartment).

Securing the spacer
Since our main idea with the development o RIGIFLEX-N was to com-ply with the standards o API 610 and API 671, the spacer is securedby a saety catch, too.In case that the laminae break the spacer remains within the coupling. In general the removable part is supplied along with a laminae set pre-assembled by the manuacturer.
RIGIFLEX-N laminae
RIGILFEX-N laminae are waisted laminae sets arranged in layers. Theyare connected to the hubs or anges, respectively, in an absolutelybacklash-ree ft by means o positive-locking set screws. The number o the layers o individual laminae allows to vary torques, displacement fgures and stiness or special designs.
RIGIFLEX-N couplings are used on such applications which require areliable and maintenance-ree torque transmission with shat displace-ment at the same time.RIGIFLEX-N was developped or pump drives in particular. This cou-
pling system corresponds to the regulations o API 610 and may besupplied in accordance with API 671 optionally.(API = American Petroleum Institute)Torques rom 240 Nm to 280.000 Nm are available in 15 sizes oran optimum adjustment to the dierent applications.

RIGIFLEX-N with spacer rom CFRP
to bridge lager shat distances with a very avourable weight ratio.
Assembly
The spacers o RIGIFLEXR-N have with drawing screws, serving ordisassembly and assembly. The screws make sure that the adapteranges are drawn in the direction o the spacer and consequently slip
o the centering in order to assure a radial disassembly o the spacerincluding the laminae sets.
NON SPARKING LIGHT
Basically the NON SPARKING LIGHT couplings o KTR are providedwith a saety stop as described in the API 671 standard. In this way itis assured that sparks cannot be produced by rotating coupling parts, since the spacer is kept inside the coupling in case that the laminae ails.Furthermore a special washer rom stainless steel 1.4571 ensures thatno sparks can occur in the event o a laminae ailure.
Integrated overload protection
A clamping ring hub with integrated sliding sleeve is used. I too hightorques occur in the drive train, the clamping ring hub slips through onthe shat with the sliding sleeve. The shat is not damaged; the sleeveserves as wearing part that must be exchanged i necessary. The slipping torque can be adjusted through the tightening torque othe clamping screws.

Description o coupling
Explosion protection use
RADEX-N couplings are suitable or power transmission in drives inhazardous areas. The couplings are certifed and confrmed according toEC standard 94/9/EC (ATEX 95) as units o category 2G/2D and thussuitable or the use in hazardous areas o zone 1, 2, 21 and 22. Pleaseread through our inormation included in the respective Type Clampingring hubs (clamping hub without dowel screw only or category 3) usedin hazardous areas must be selected in a way that there is a saety os = 2 rom the peak torque o the unit including all operating parame-
ters to the torque o rictional engagement and to the nominal torque othe coupling. Examination Certifcate and the operating and mountinginstructions at www.ktr.com.
HubSpacer
The RADEX-N is a backlash-ree, torsionally rigid and maintenance-ree all-steel coupling. The laminae that are extremely rigid in sense orotation are made rom high-strength, stainless spring steel and enablea compensation or high displacements with low restoring orces. By
reason o the all-steel design the RADEX-N can be used in drives withtemperatures o up to 280 C.
FEM-optimized laminae orm
The steel laminae packings rom stainless spring steel were developedon the basis o FEM calculations. Under consideration o the necessarypossibilities o displacements o the coupling the optimal orm regardingtorque transmission and torsional rigidity was aimed or. The ftted ormo the steel laminae at the outside diameter is the result o this optimi-zation calculation.
Laminae packings with dowel screws
The heart o the steel laminae coupling are the laminae packings andtheir connection to the hubs or spacers. High-strength, special dowelscrew that are alternately screwed with hubs and spacer enable a com-bination o rictional engagement and positive locking. Thus a high powerdensity with simultaneous easy displacement and low restoring orcesis guaranteed. Due to the special constructive design o the RADEX-Ncomponents the laminae packings are artifcially prestressed. Herebythe torsional rigidity o approx. 30 % is enabled and at the same time theknown problem regarding the axial vibrations o the spacer is avoided.

Delivery condition
RADEX-N are delivered as individual parts (can be delivered assem-bled on request). The hubs can be supplied unbored or with fnish boreand keyway or with a rictionally engaged shat-hub-connection.The shat-hub-connection needs to be inspected by the customer
(consult with KTR, i necessary).
Assembly and operating advice
(Please see our mounting instructions KTR standard 47110 see www.ktr.com.) For the assembly it is important to make sure that the laminaesets are assembled ree rom distortion in axial direction.
I the fnish bore is machined by the customer, the concentric and axialrunning tolerances have to be observed (see sketch below).
Balancing:
On request o the customer the RADEX-N couplings can be balanced. For most applications this is not necessary due to the accurate machi-ning o the coupling. Please consult with KTR or any urther questions.
Saety regulations:
The coupling must be selected in a way that the permissible couplingload is not exceeded in any operating condition. For that purpose acomparison between the actual loads with the permissible coupling cha-racteristics has to be perormed. The customer must protect rotating parts against unintended touch (Sa-
ety o Machines DIN EN 292 part 2). Please take precautions that thereis a sufcient coupling protection in case o a racture o the couplingcaused by overload.
Installation:
RADEX-N couplings are designed or horizontal installation. Forvertical installation the spacer has to be supported (see sketch below). Please contact.

Spiders our innovation T-PUR
KTR has developed a new standard material or its spiders. The improved polyurethanematerial T-PUR is resistant to signiicantly higher temperatures and has a considerablylonger service lie than the previous polyurethane material. From the visual point o viewwe have characterized the material T-PUR by the colours orange (92 Shore-A), purple(98 Shore-A) and pale green (64 Shore-D). The previous spiders made rom polyure-thane in yellow, red and natural white with green ends will still be available. Up to sizeROTEX 90 inclusive single spiders are used. For ROTEX couplings rom size 100 to180 the spider consists o DZ tooth segments as a standard. The single spider will stillbe available in these sizes as an option.
Explosion-proo use
ROTEX couplings are suitable or power transmission in drives in hazardous areas. Thecouplings are certiied and conirmed according to EC standard 94/9/EC (ATEX 95) asunits o category 2G/2D and thus suitable or the use in hazardous areas o zone 1, 2, 21and 22. Please read through our inormation included in the respective Type ExaminationCertiicate and the operating and mounting instructions at www.ktr.com.
Perormance
In contrast to other lexible couplings, the intermediate members o which are subject tobending stress and are thereore prone to earlier wear, the lexible teeth o ROTEX cou-plings are subject to pressure only. This gives the additional advantage o the individualteeth being able to accept considerably higher loads. The elastomer parts show deorma-tion with load and excessive speeds. Suicient space or expansion should be ensured(see drawing deormation with load). The maximum torsion angle with ROTEX couplings o any size amounts to 5. They canbe itted both horizontally and vertically.
General description
ROTEX - couplings are torsionally lexible and designed or positive torque transmis-sion. They are ail-sae. Operational vibrations and shocks are eiciently dampened andreduced. The two congruent coupling halves with concave claws on the inside areperiphally oset in relation to one another by hal a pitch. In addition, they are designed insuch a way as to enable an involute spider to be located between them. The teeth o the spider are crowned to avoid edge pressure i the shats are misaligned.ROTEX couplings are capable o compensating or axial, radial and angulardisplacements o the shats to be connected.
ROTEX - couplings are characterized by small dimensions, low weight and low mass mo-ments o inertia yet transmit high torques. Running quality and service lie o the couplingare improved by accurate all-over machining.Their application is ideal or transmitting torque while damping torsional vibrations and
absorbing shocks produced by the uneven operation o certain prime movers.

1 Drives without periodical torsional vibrations
e. g. centriugal pumps, ans, screw compressors, etc. The couplingis selected taking into account the rated torques TKN and maximumtorque TK max.
1.1 Load produced by rated torque
Taking into consideration the ambienttemperature, the permissible ratedtorque TKN o the coupling has to cor-respond at least to the rated torque TNo the machine.
1.3 Load produced by torque shocksThe permissible maximum torque o thecoupling has to correspond at least tothe total o peak torque TS and therated torque TN o the machine, takinginto account the shock requency Zand the ambient temperature. This applies in case i the rated torqueTN o the machine is at the same timesubject to shocks.Knowing the mass distribution, shock direction and shock mode, thepeak torque TS can be calculated. For drives with A. C.-motors with high masses on the load side we
would recommend to calculate the peak driving torque with the helpo our simulation programme.

Coupling selection
The ROTEX coupling is selected in accordance with DIN 740 part 2. The coupling has to be dimensioned in a way that the permissible couplingload is not exceeded in any operating condition. For this purpose the actual loads have to be compared to the permissible parameters o thecoupling. The torques T
KN/T
Kmaxmentioned reer to the spider. The shat-hub-connection has to be investigated by the customer.
2.Drives with periodical torsional vibrations. For drives subject tohigh torsional vibrations, e. g. diesel engines, piston compressors, piston pumps, generators, etc., it is necessary to perorm a torsionalvibration calculation to ensure a sae operation. I requested, weperorm the torsional vibration calculation and the coupling selectionin our company. For necessary details please see KTR standard20004.
2.1 Load produced by rated torque
Taking into account the ambient tem-perature, the permissible rated torqueTKN o the coupling has to correspond at least to the rated torque
TN o the machine.
2.2 Passing through the resonance
range
Taking into account the temperature, the peak torque TS arising when the resonance range is run throughmust not exceed the maximum torque TKmax o the coupling.
2.3 Load produced by vibratory torque shocks
Taking into account the ambient tem-perature, the permissible vibratory tor-que TKW o the coupling must not beexceeded by the highest periodical
vibratory torque TW with operating speed. For higher operating requencies > 10, the heat produced by dam-ping in the elastomer part is considered as damping power PW.The permissible damping power PKW o the coupling depends onthe ambient temperature and must not be exceeded by the dampingpower produced.

Coupling description
Explosion-proo use
POLY-NORM couplings are suitable or the use in drives in hazardous areas. The couplings are certifed according to EC Standard 94/9/EC (ATEX 95)and belong to category 2G/2D, are confrmed and thus suitable or the use inhazardous areas o zone 1, 2, 21 and 22. Please read our inormation in therespective Type Examination Certifcate and the operating and mountinginstructions under www.ktr.com.
Variety o Options
The coupling can be adapted to many applications due to the many options thatare possible with the building block arrangement. The POLY-NORM compo-nents o a given model can be mixed and matched with each other to obtaindierent shat distances using the same basic component.
On request, we can provide customized variations o the POLY-NORM to ftyour needs or example, our POLY-NORM overload coupling with RUFLEXtorque limiter. Just ask us!
General description
The POLY-NORM coupling is a torsionally exible, shear type shat coupling. It has an axial plug-in design with a unique short over all length. The POLY-NORM can be used in nearly all types o machinery and is ideal or the pump
industry. The POLY-NORM coupling compensates or shat misalignment o all kindsand saely transmits the torque.
Function/Design
The coupling consists o two hubs, with fngers separated by elastomericelements. The hubs are assembled blindly plugging the hub fngers into eachother axially and the elastomer ring is trapped in a groove between both cou-pling hubs. The compact POLY-NORM coupling transmits torque with theelastomer in compression.Shat misalignments, vibrations and shock loads are eectively absorbed by thePOLY-NORM.The coupling is maintenance-ree and used in general machinery, the pumpindustry and in compressors. Torques o up to 26,800 Nm are stocked in 17dierent sizes and 7 designs. In addition to the standard coupling models, angedrop out center and spacer options are available in many variations.
