Marching to the End! K-T District Moving Forward

I would like to thank all of you for your long dedicated hours and for the time you have devoted in

living the pledge, “K-T has a New Attitude” as we continue to promote the new brand,

#KidsNeedKiwanis. You have been inspirational and as I continue to travel throughout

Kentucky and Tennessee promoting Governor-Elect Leigh’s goals we can take great pride in

being a part of one of the greatest Kiwanis Districts in the United States.

I want to say thanks for the increase in attendance at our Mid-Year Conference, District Convention, and our

Governor’s visits.

As we Kiwanians start our 101st year as a Kiwanis district, we want to continue helping the moms and babies,

and I would urge you to focus on giving all you can to our K-T Foundation. I am excited about our K-T

Foundation and I hope that every club will be supportive through their gifts.

In our district I have heard and I have seen. I have seen the playgrounds. I have seen how you have given to

Service Leadership Programs, food banks, backpacks and many other causes. I have seen you give thousands

of dollars and thousands of hours because you believe #KidsNeedKiwanis. Your help is needed even more.

Your help is needed in growing our Kiwanis family. Invite your friends, community leaders, and family members

to join us because they, too, will know and believe that #KidsNeedKiwanis.

This coming year we have a great opportunity to work with Governor Leigh, Governor-Elect Dale, and Vice-

Governor Russ to grow and Brand the Kiwanis name all over the Kentucky-Tennessee District. His team is

ready to carry that lighted torch.

I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Governor Chuck and his lieutenant

governors for the magical year we have had. I want to thank Margie Bingham for her

hard work, and for coordinating the members of her team, Fran and Vivian.

Governor- Elect Leigh Chagnon

I think it was a great convention. I have heard many compliments praising the workshops, speakers

and the Governors Banquet. Chuck’s idea to have the Blues Brothers appear was a brilliant way to

start the evening entertainment. We were extremely fortunate to have Kiwanis International

President-Designate Jane Erickson with us. She offered many enthusiastic words of encouragement

for which we were most grateful.

We have been given some large goals from International for the coming year (900 new members and

12 new clubs), goals I know we can attain with everybody’s assistance and hard work.

In closing I want my lieutenant governors to know how honored I am to have such an energized

group of Kiwanians helping me lead our district to great heights this coming year. Everybody

remember, #KIDS NEED KIWANIS.

District Secretary- Treasurer Fran Marion

Secretaries, continue doing those monthly reports. The current secretaries will remain in the system until October so that the September report and the annual report can be completed by the 2015-2016 secretaries. The 2015-2016 secretaries should also send to the District Office by October 30 the Distinguished Form for 2015-2016.

Reminder: New member adds must be reported by September 30 (it is advisable that this be done by September 28 in the event of a computer glitch) and non-returning members are to be deleted by October 10 (it is advisable that this be done by October 8 in the event of a computer glitch) The board approved a KY-TN New Member Add Fee of $5.00 per member for all of 2016-2017. We must ask all clubs to finish and submit their club by-laws before the Mid-Year Conference in February 2017. This is a requirement from Kiwanis International for all Non-Profit Clubs. I want to thank all of you for your prayers this week. My mother passed away Sunday night with a massive heart attack. After cremation, and when we can get a date approved, I will be transporting her ashes to Arlington National Cemetery. Thank you for all the hours you give to your communities. #Kids Need Kiwanis Fran

#Kids Need Kiwanis

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A KIWANIAN?

It is time to stop remembering – to stop reflecting on our past achievements.

Too frequently when I visit clubs, I hear about the “Glory Days.” Those are the clubs whose members dwell on the things that brought those clubs to greatness, and I am convinced that they have done great things.

However, your club’s future begins today, not yesterday or tomorrow! We need to be looking forward to what's next; to what we can do that is relevant now.

Are your club members having “dream sessions” on a regular basis? Do you ask your fellow Kiwanians what their goals and ambitions for your club are? Are the members of your club willing to change what needs to be changed rather than just changing those things that are easy to change?

Sometimes we have to think outside of the box. We need to think creatively. I challenge all of us to be unique, to be different, to be a Kiwanian.

In your service,

Dale

Crawford Middle School Builders Club Every year the Crawford Middle School Builders Club is given the responsibility of taking care of the school flag. Mr. Jones, our Principal, honors us by allowing the club to raise the flag in the morning and take it down in the afternoon. This is a huge responsibility and one that we take seriously.

On August 22, 2016 we had our first Builders Club meeting and we reviewed flag etiquette. We invited the Bryan Station High School ROTC cadets to review how to fold the flag, carry it, raise it and take it down. It’s always a wonderful meeting during which students teach students flag skills. The students always ask questions about the flag; “What do the colors stand for?”, “When do we fly the flag at half-mast?” This year, I took this opportunity to talk to the students about the history of the flag. They specifically enjoyed the section about the last time the flag was redesigned.

As you may remember, in July of 1960, President Dwight D Eisenhower commissioned a new flag and a star was added for Hawaii. The President asked citizens to send to the White House designs of possible flag options.

Robert Heft had offered a new flag design for his school Social Studies project. He took an American flag and sewed two more stars on it. He received a B- for the assignment, because the teacher didn’t like the fact that he had added stars to the present flag of our country.

Robert liked his new flag option. He sent the same design to Washington and it was selected for the construction of our new flag. When the teacher learned that the President had selected Roberts’s flag, she changed his grade. ”I guess if it’s good enough for Washington, it’s good enough for me. I hereby change your grade to an A.” Susan McVey

Each honoree selected the charity that would receive his or her $750 award, and the awards were given on behalf of each honoree. Superintendent Day chose “Love out Loud,” a faith based after school program. Superintendent Raines selected the YMCA’s Backpack Blessings that sends nutritious meals home with students for the weekends. Superintendent Reese selected Catoosa Children’s Fund that provides for needy students.

Fort Oglethorpe’s Kiwanis Club Past President Dwight Watt presented donation checks to 2016 Distinguished Service Awards Honorees Melody Day, Denia Reese and Damon Raines for their charity.

Kiwanis Club of Ft. Oglethorpe

The Kiwanis Club of Fort Oglethorpe honored School Superintendents Melody Day of Chickamauga, Damon Raines of Walker County and Denia Reese of Catoosa County. They were each awarded the 2016 Distinguished Service Award on April 13 at the Walker County Civic Center. Nearly 300 guests attended the ninth annual luncheon. One hundred percent of the money raised at the silent auction this year was donated. Additional funding from the club was also donated, making a total donation of $2, 250.

KIWANIS CHARITY GOLF EVENT

“2016 was the most successful Kiwanis Charity Golf Outing in our history” said Phil Smith, Golf Chairman

of the Kiwanis Club of Tellico Village. “The Golf Outing was held on August 27, 2016 at the Toqua Golf Course.

“We had 30 foursomes, the most in our history, thanks to the excellent pre-event coverage by The Connection

and The News Herald, one of our Corporate Sponsors. “Chick-Fil-A, another sponsor, provided the lunch.

“Altogether, we had 110 sponsors for the event,” said Phil. “We had 48 prizes for the golfers thanks to the

generosity of our sponsors. “The golf outing is our largest charity event for the club,” said Phil. We estimate that

this year’s Kiwanis Charity Golf Outing will gross over $19,000, all of which will be distributed to local charities

after expenses.

“The Pro Drive, where a professional golfer from the village, Adam Jacob, hits a Tee-shot, raised nearly

$900 for the Smokey Mountain Service Dogs and the Kiwanis Key Club also raised money from the event. “We

could not have pulled this off without the dedication and hard work of our 100 + and the generosity of our many

sponsors of the event” said Phil.

Kiwanis One Day: Think you won’t make a difference? Think again.

Each year, Kiwanis clubs around the world join in a day of service. Starting in

the 2016–17 administrative year, Kiwanis One Day will be held on the fourth Saturday of

October. In 2016, Kiwanis One Day will be observed on October 22.

The Kiwanis International board decided to move the annual Kiwanis One Day observance to

October to align with future sponsorship opportunities.

Clubs that held a Kiwanis One Day event in April 2016 are not required to hold a second event this

year. Clubs seeking ideas for the October observance could consider participating in Trick-or-Treat

for UNICEF as a Kiwanis-Key Club event. Clubs that wish to participate in the Legacy of Play

contest, held with partner Landscape Structures Inc. can start planning their submission to

win US$25,000 worth of playground equipment available in that contest.

Kiwanis One Day is a great opportunity to bring together the Kiwanis family of clubs to focus on

local community service. It’s an example of our belief that kids need Kiwanis–kids in the

community need Kiwanis to provide programs and services no longer available because of school

and municipal budget constraints, and kids who want to be in youth clubs need Kiwanis club

members as mentors to help them thrive, prosper and grow.

Start planning today for Kiwanis One Day: Tools. Got a game plan? Click to get one, including project ideas.

Media resources: customizable news release and Kiwanis 'Just The Facts' fact sheet. Visit

the public awareness page for tips and more resources on how to work with the media and

create awareness for your club.

Success stories. Watch videos of previous Kiwanis One Day events.

Contests. Kiwanians are invited to enter the Kiwanis One Day photo contest for the chance to

win a US$200 gift certificate to the Kiwanis Family Store. The Legacy of Play Contest with

Kiwanis partner Landscape Structures was held during the April 2016 Kiwanis One Day and

will be offered again during Kiwanis One Day 2017.

How will your club make a difference in your community on Kiwanis One Day? Let us know

at [email protected].

Is your club, division and district using the correct Kiwanis logo and wordmark? Did you know

Kiwanis has a brand and style guide where you can get the correct information regarding which one to use?

You can review the brand and style guide online and make certain your club is meeting all the Kiwanis-style guidelines. It’s important for all of us in Kiwanis to be consistent—in our clubs and in

the face we present to the public. That’s why we encourage clubs to use the official logo and wordmark on all materials.

If you’re not sure how to apply the brand to your club’s banners, advertisements or other print materials, visit our custom club logo website and complete the online form. You can also receive

special anniversary logos that mirror the special logo we created for Kiwanis’ Centennial Celebration in 2015.

The form takes the guesswork out of logo creation. You’ll receive a package of logos in files appropriate for print and digital use.
