Austin, Texas-Over the river and
through the woods we went to
the state basketball tournament
in Austin. But his time we were
behind the wheel of the 2013 all-
new Lexus GS 350 and man let
me tell you it was some ride.
Yes the new Lexus is out early
with the 3.5 Liter V6 with direct
injection and port fuel injection
cranking out 306 horsepower
and 277 lbs per foot of torque.
Good mid-size numbers of 19 in
the city and 28 on the highway
with a combine mileage of 23
miles per gallon. The engine is
mated to a six-speed sequential
shift electronically controlled
transmission with intelligence
(ECT-I and paddle shifters/drive
mode select. The new Lexus is
equipped with front independent
double-wishbone and independ-
ent multi-link rear suspension
with gas pressurized shock
absorbers and stabilizer bar.
Vehicle speed sensing power
steering adds to what is already
super handling. Four wheel
power assisted disc brakes
brings this baby to a super safe
and swift stop. That four- sensor
four- channel anti-lock braking
system with electronic brake-
force distribution and brake
assist makes stopping as much
fun as taking off. All of this
comes thrusting to the pavement
on 17 inch nine-spoke Alloy
wheels neatly wrapped by P
225/50R 17 inch performing
tires.
In addition to all the normal
safety features the new Lexus is
equipped with whiplash injury
lessening front seats and driver
and front passenger knee air
bags. Other features such as
VSC, ABS and brake assist and
TRAC to name a few. Daytime
running lamps along with Bi-
xenon headlamps just round out
the state-of-the-art safety tech-
nology for this model.
Once you are inside the new
Lexus GS 350 you come face to
face with perforated leather
trimmed interior with 10-way
memory driver power adjustable
seats. Smart access keyless entry
and push button start/stop. Sure
the steering wheel and gear shift
knob are leather wrapped. Other
standard features include a
power tilt/slide moon roof with
one touch open/close.
When it comes to sounds you
know to look for an optional
Mark Levinson Premium
Surround Sound Audio system
with 17-speakers with 835 watts
with 7.1 channel architecture
digital amplifier and Green Edge
speaker technology. A special
HDD navigation with 12.3 inch
high resolution split screen mul-
timedia display and Lexus
Enform with destination along
with Nav weather, Nav traffic
sports and stocks. There is even
a pre-collision system and
dynamic radar cruise.
We could go on and on about the
new Lexus GS 350 but we think
you’ve read enough to check
them out at your Lexus Dealers!

Austin, Texas-Phil Forte scored
the first eight points and the last
eight points as Flower Mound
Marcus edged Fort Bend Travis
56-52 for the Class 5A state title.
The senior guard is one of the
purest shooters we’ve seen in a
very long time. He hit a jumper
and made six free throws to seal
the win, but it was also Forte
who hit one jumper and two
treys for the Marauders first
eight points as well. They won
for the 115th time against six
defeats in the past three seasons.
That landed them two state titles
and one state finalist appearance
as the seniors shed tears before
the start of the title game. With
their point guard A. J Lucky in
foul trouble Marcus bought time
and stayed close trailing by only
two points at the half. Travis
got off to a good start on a 5-0
run in the second half as Andrew
Harrison led Travis with 23
points. His twin Aaron Harrison
added 10 and was the only other
Tiger in double figures.
One of the keys was 6 feet 8
inch Nick Banyard, who grabbed
a game high13 rebounds to go
along with his 10 points and two
assists.
With both teams running a
patient offense with Travis only
taking 41 attempts at the basket
and connecting on 17 of them
while Marcus connected on the
same amount while attempting
two mores with 43 attempts.
The difference in the game was
at the foul line where Marcus hit
18 of 21 and Travis only 12 for
19. So few attempts lead to low
assists total as well with Travis
having only 6 and Marcus had
10.
Clearly a hard fought game with
four points separating the two
teams when the final horn
sounded at the Erwin Center
where a little more than 10,000
fans gathered for the Class 5A
game.
It’s time to rebuild for Marcus
with 12 seniors one junior, one
sophomore and one freshman on
the team. Coach Danny
Henderson and his staff will
have some work to do to get
back here again. Jack Holden,
Sean Campbell and Mark
Wheeler are the only three guys
coming back next year.
Graduating this spring is John
Malone, Jared Hamilton, Matt
Ledford, Jacob VanNattan,
Austin Parish, Cody Apfel, Phil
Forte, Jordan Johnson, Nick
Banyard, Marcus Smart and
Tanner Backus.

TAIJE JORDAN
LANCASTER
Houston, Texas-When it comes
to hurdles many people are
unaware of just how much dif-
ference there is in the 100 hur-
dles and the 300 hurdles. While
covering the 61st running of the
TSU Relays we talked with
Dallas Lancaster super star Taije
Jordan about those races. Jordan
won the 100 meter hurdles in a
time of 14.33 and claimed the
300 hurdles in 42.75 and made
her third trip to the nationally
ranked Relays. “I’ve been here
three years and it’s great to be
able to go against some of the
best in the nation”. Jordan went
on to say it’s a good opportunity
to get Lancaster name back out
there and make a statement.
“Yes sir we are back to stay and
next year I plan to attend Baylor
University and run track before
going to Medical school to
become a pediatrician”. She also
wants to go to the Olympics in
the 100 hurdles. Having a love
for taking care of babies and lit-
tle kids, Jordan says it’s a dream
come true to be able to live her
dream. The lovely and talented
young lady is ranked number
one if the nation and she finds
that amazing. “Ha Ha, I really
don’t know what to make of it
because all I want to do was stay
in the top three and then get to
state and win”.
The 100 hurdles is her favorite
mainly because it fast and quick
and she had five year experience
running this race. She also runs
the 300 hurdles and she talked
about the differences in the
races. “Conditioning is required
in the 300 because if you get off
to a slow start you can mentally
get back into the race, but in the
100 meters quickness and tech-
nique is the key in order to win”.
Since the 5th grade she has
always wanted to attend Baylor
University. “Every since I say
them at the Texas Relays when I
was a kid, I’ve always wanted to
run track for the Lady Bears”.
But first she has an opportunity
to defend her state title in the
hurdles this May.
MARCUS SMART-FLOWER
MOUND MARCUS
Austin, Texas-With the game on
the line Marcus Smart got
behind Fort Bend Travis defense
and slammed the ball home as
his team ran off 10 straight
points. They went on to win
their second straight Class 5A
title with a 56-52 win over
Travis. Coming into the tourna-
ment with only two losses in
their 39 games the Marauders
kept it close then exploded for
22 points in the fourth period to
win the game at the end. Smart
had eight rebounds and hit on
seven of nine foul shots for his
15 points in 30 minutes of
action. We spoke with him after
the game to get some of his
thoughts. “We expected the
game was going to be physical
and the officials let us play and
sometimes I thought it was a lit-
tle too much over looked”. The
talented young man praised his
teammate Phil Forte who scored
a game high 24 points and
walked away with the M.V.P.
“Without a doubt sir, he
deserved it all year long. Phil
has been doing that for us and
not getting the credit he
deserves; we are a complete
team with good coaches and
even our trainers do their part to
help us win games”.
When asked about going against
the Harrison twins from Fort
Bend, Smart said he knew it was
going to be a tough game. “We
knew going in we were going to
have to play very hard in order
to win this game”. A big stop
down the stretch and Smart
made a big time layup and the
momentum shifted to Marcus
and they went on to win.
After the game Smart was turn-
ing flips and we noticed his
build we had to think maybe
football. “Well I played football
all the way to my 5th grade year
but basketball is my game, but
the flips came from working out
with my brother who is gymnast
and he taught me a few things”.

LEWISVILLE-MARCUS
Austin, Texas-Flower Mound
Marcus High School won the
state’s Class 5A title again. This
time it was a 56-52 victory over
Fort Bend Travis before 10,000
fans at the Erwin Center. Coach
Danny Henderson is assisted by
Kenny Boren, Brian Blackburn,
Craig Owen and Eli Rodriguez
and the Marauders are a startling
115-6 the past three years. After
their win over F.B. Travis, we
talked with him about that five
point second period they had.
“The big problem was A.J.
Luckey got into foul trouble and
he initiates our quick hitter”.
Coach Henderson went on to
credit Travis on some pretty
good defense to add to their
offensive woes in the second
period.
As we talked more with
Henderson we learned his guard
Phil Forte makes “600 threes a
day and I do mean makes not
just shoots 600 but makes 600
treys a day. His work ethic is
unbelievable I kid you not”.
Another big task for Marcus was
dealing with the Harrison twins.
“It’s nearly impossible to stop
those guys and our man to man
defense based on helping out
played with them but they get
you in foul trouble because they
can drive to the box so well”.
ROYCE JOHNSON-DALLAS
KIMBALL
Austin, Texas-The Knights of
Dallas Kimball High School
made their 9th trip to Austin and
won for the second straight year
in a row. They came from
behind to beat Jack Yates High
School 78-75 on the strength of
a 14-4 run in the last three min-
utes. “When we were down two
points we told Torrey (Henry) to
drive but he thought we said
shoot so he hit the big trey giv-
ing us the lead”. The Lions then
turned the ball over and
Shannon Lilly Jr. took over from
there. “We knew somehow we
were going to find a way to win
the game. Our kids are hard
workers and I thank God for
their effort out there today”.
Johnson who is the son of the
legendary Goree Johnson
reminded the media that the
Dallas Metro-Plex is going to be
tough for many years to come.
“We love our rivalries with Jack
Yates and now that they are
going to be 3A they will still
have to play the Dallas Metro-
Plex in order to win the state
Wilmer-Hutchins and several of
our 3A schools are good solid
programs”.
In talking with Johnson we also
learned he knows when to hold
them on what most thought was
a bad call. He rushed up court
and admits he was glad he didn’t
say anything to the officials.
This group has only three sen-
iors and look for them to have
something to say about the state
title for the third straight year in
2013. “We have a good young
group of kids and they are will-
ing to work hard and our staff
with be ready to go again.
Johnson is assisted by Toby
Daniels, Ryan Foppe, Robert
Jacobs and Bo Johnson.

Austin Texas-During our cover-
age of the 2012 Boy’s state tour-
nament, I had the opportunity to
interview Mark Cousins the cur-
rent University Interscholastic
League Athletic Director regard-
ing the state of athletics in
Texas. Here are some of his
responses.
Question-Many fans in theDallas area are concernedregarding greater Houstonschools competing in the RegionII-Dallas area. Did the U.I.L.try to ease this problem?Response-The regional align-ment is always difficult for theU.I.L. and that’s not necessari-ly the exploding populationwith Harris County and theHouston population. It dealswith West Texas and theDallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex. Each region has eight districtsand we have to fill those up. Westart in the north and west, goeast and end up in the south. We lost a district in thePanhandle. We had two dis-tricts out there and we had tomake some decisions to movedistricts in Region II. We haveto the same on number of dis-tricts in Region II along withadding a district from CentralTexas.Question-Is a 6A division loom-ing for Texas?Response-I don’t think so. If
you look at the basketball
tournament, we have six con-
ferences. Conference A has
been split into two confer-
ences- Division I and II along
with eleven man and six man.
In track and field, we’re going
to add six conferences in the
next six months. In those
sports where we have 1100-
1200 schools participating, we
already have six conference;
we just don’t call them 6A.
The biggest problem we have
is creating severe travel prob-
lems for our schools. The talk
is about breaking off schools
with over 5,000 by themselves
or the schools over 3,000 by
themselves but the reality is
there just aren’t that many
schools with the numbers to
justify doing that. We have to
justify doing this and the
numbers just aren’t there at
this time.
Question-Is the medical screen-ing for high school athletessomething that will continueunder your leadership?Response-That is something
we have been concerned with
for a long time. While Dr.
Breithaupt was the U.I.L.
Athletic Director the medical
advisory committee recom-
mended and passed a required
concussion management pro-
tocol that our schools had to
follow. It was based on infor-
mation that was released form
the Brain Injury Association
of America. We’ve had a con-
cussion protocol for schools
since 2005. Our schools and
coaches have been aware of
this for several years. This
past year our medical advisory
commission changed our rec-
ommendation to the ational
Federation Concussion
Protocol. In addition, the
Texas State Legislature passed
a law as to how schools have
to deal with concussions and
how to proceed when students
are believed to have had head
injuries.
Question-Can the state tourna-ment be rotated among the citiesof Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston,Austin and San Antonio?Response-It is certainly some-
thing that can be discussed.
We will listen to all proposals.
We moved to a centralized site
for championship football
rotating between San Antonio,
Houston and Arlington. We
had the opportunity to move
some of other events to differ-
ent locations. We will look at
several things, discuss it and
makes decisions again based
on what’s in the best interest
for our schools and fans.
Mr. Cousins provided some
quality information to us and we
look forward to working with
him over the next few years. As
I promised from the beginning
of this column, I will provide
the information from the main
sources regarding athletics for
young men and women.
That’s just the way I see it!

Hey Houston, spring is here
again. That means definite
changes like daylight savings,
things starting to bloom, pollen
in the air, and kids will have a
spring break to refresh there
minds. You can believe me love
will be in the air, and like pollen
it will affect some worse than
others. With the kids maybe out
of the house for a week, you can
have a little togetherness time
with your mate. And with day-
light savings time you will have
a little extra time in the evening
for maybe a walk, or a quiet
time on the patio or the deck, or
to have your favorite drink as
you take a little time to commu-
nicate. Sometimes we tend to
forget or take our partner for
granted. Just because you’ve got
Mr. or Mrs Right hooked does-
n’t mean they will stay hooked,
if we don’t continue doing those
things to show them we are still
interested. Some people are
more needy than others. Rule
one, know your mate. Of course
every evening won’t be exciting,
and the sparks won’t always fly,
but you have to make a con-
scious effort. Recently on In the
Love Corner that airs on
Wednesday’s night at 8 pm,
there was a concern from the
female audience that they were
not getting enough attention, or
compliments from the other half.
It was to the point that they had
to get dressed up go out with the
girls just to get somebody to
compliment them, then they go
back home I guess to their mate
who didn’t do their job. Now is
that right I don’t think so. That’s
where communication comes
into play. Rule two talk to your
mate. Compliments should be a
natural occurrence, should be
but as we become familiar with
our loved ones we tend not to
take that second look, or go the
extra mile.
The top love songs for the
month are 1 Love Don’t Love
Nobody Spinners 2 I’m
Catching Hell Natalie Cole 3 I
Wanna Know Joe 4 When a
Woman’s Fed Up R Kelly 5
Let’s wait Awhile Janet Jackson
So until next time keep a little
love in your heart the look of
love in your eyes and don’t let a
day go bye without telling
someone that you love them
even if that someone is you.

While at a Booker T.
Washington High School foot-
ball game, we ran into former
B.T.W. standout Rev. John
Curtiss Gibbs and he had two
boys with him. After several
months of asking him he finally
brought them out to the
Studewood Cobras. By that time
John Gibbs Jr. was ten and too
tall to play junior varsity so he
played varsity little league foot-
ball with 11 and 12 year old
boys. The following year Gibbs
was 11 and didn’t play little
league and that team led by Zelt
“Peanut” Minor won the Super
Bowl. John’s younger brother
(William) won a Super Bowl
with the Cobras. But John got a
lot of good advice from Reggie
Washington another B.T.W.
graduate who coached the varsi-
ty Cobras to that Super Bowl
title. “What they taught me was
to be a leader and command the
attention of your team while in
the huddle”. Gibbs used that
same thing as he took over the
B.T.W. freshman team and then
on to the junior varsity squad
before getting a great deal of
varsity playing time as a junior.
His break came after he went 10
of 11 against Yates in the 2010
Fiesta Booker-Bryant Memorial
Classic and won the ‘Rising
Star’. He recalls being mad
because he didn’t win the most
valuable player of the classic
ballgame. “My Mom told me I
just need to work harder and as
a senior you will have a chance
to get that M.V.P. trophy. Having
a growth spurt between the 7th
and 8th grade Gibbs returned to
B.T.W. for his senior year at
nearly 6 feet 6 inches. Thanks to
hard work all summer long he
felt good about beating Yates in
the annual classic and he did so
14-13 and yes he was awarded
the M.V.P. of the Fiesta Fall
Classic. “Sir I tell you it’s like a
dream come true for me to beat
Yates in this game and people
all throughout the community
were coming up to me and say-
ing aren’t you the quarterback at
Washington and you all better
beat Yates this year. Gibbs said
all he could do was promise
they would be ready when that
day came and they were.
With probably the best touch of
any passer in Metro-Houston
area since Andrew Luck from
Stratford and Andy Dalton at
Katy, Gibbs is probably quicker
and a much better running than
both of them.
Once the coaching staff at
Alcorn saw his stats they were
sold on the quarterback who is
now up to 6 feet 7 inches and
still might grow some more.
Going to Alcorn State won’t be
easy for Gibbs because between
Fred Air I McNair and the late
Steve Air II McNair there is
more than 24 thousand yards
and 150 touchdowns. But Gibbs
taking a chip of the block of his
proud father is more than ready
for the challenge and is staying
in shape by running track. “I
understand having weight on my
shoulders and we know it’s
some big shoes to fill at Alcorn
but I’m leaving for Mississippi
on June 6, 2012”. That’s two
days after he graduates from
B.T.W.
We are very excited for Gibbs
and we look forward to covering
him in the same manner we cov-
ered Steve McNair. By the way
we expect him to shine because
Studewood Cobras and B.T.W.
Eagles always give it their all
when it counts the most!
We have good one for you this
time around. He’s Booker T.
Washington senior John Gibbs
Jr. In the classroom at
Washington High School, he
likes his psychology class better
and says he has always been
good on this class. Holding to a
2.5 G.P. A. Gibbs feels he wants
to major in communications
when he enrolls at Alcorn State
University this fall. With a
desire to council young people
or work in public relations as an
adult, Gibbs feels he can do well
in that category. Fact is John is
the son of legendary B.T.W.
world class athlete Rev. John
Curtiss Gibbs who won a Rose
Bowl while playing at UCLA
after his days at B.T.W. in the
middle 70s.
But his mother Lorraine Gibbs
is his most driving force
because she had always been
right there at school with him
and his parents made sure he
stayed on the right course.
“They showed me the difference
between right and wrong and
saw to it that I followed their
rules all my life”. Gibbs went
onto say they always expected
the best out of him and he never
wanted to let them down. He
added he has always put God
first in his life and that has
helped him follow the right
path. On Sundays you’ll find
John over at Fallbrook Church
where Mike Pender is the pastor.
“It’s strengthen my faith on a
regular basic and it is shown me
the true light.
In his spare time Gibbs loves to
read short stories and actually
likes to read newspapers the old
fashion way. Following the
world of sports had been anoth-
er of Gibbs past times.
Despite being the quarterback at
B.T.W. Gibbs played basketball
and is ranked 12th in the nation
in hurdles and their 4 by 100
meter relay team beat Nimitz to
win the Barbara Jacket-Hoover
Wright 83rd running of the P.V.
Relays this past weekend.
We talked with Gibbs about his
choosing Alcorn State to further
his education and to play foot-
ball there. “There were other
schools that showed interest in
me, but Alcorn showed me the
type of love as in four-year
scholarship and an outstanding
football program and I felt truly
wanted at that school.
When asked about Barack
Obama becoming the first
African American President,
Gibbs replied; it truly gives all
blacks a good feeling knowing
they can be what they want to
be”.
Describing himself as a student
athlete first and foremost Gibbs
says he considers himself a
leader on and off the field and
loves the challenges life has to
offer.
We’ve known him since he was
ten years old and we know he is
going to do well at Alcorn State
University, because we are
going to follow him all the way!
