The importance of ancient Sri Lankan cultural events and traditions associated with the "new year" was beautifully communicated to the audience using traditional songs, dance events and a short drama. Although the musical lasted for over an hour, the performers managed to hold the attention of the audience till the end. The main event for the night was the special lecture delivered by Professor J.B Dissanayaka, who was also the chief guest of the event. His speech for the day was centered on the traditions ("avurudu sirith") associated with New Year activities. KSM AVURUDU SANDAWA 2016 April 2016 He spoke on how these traditions have evolved since the ancient past and how these traditions are interconnected with the day to day activities of a typical Sri Lankan family. The last few hours of the event was kept open for the members of the KSM to display their aesthetic skills. Both individual and group performances from members of various age groups managed to provide a pleasant "avurudu" atmosphere. The organizing committee sincerely hopes that this event was a memorable one to each and every participant. COUNSELLING IN CLINICAL PRACTICE Dr. ShiyamaArambepola. Consultant Psychiatrist Teaching Hospital, Kandy

Counseling is a client focused way of helping. It is a form of psychotherapy and it develops skills within the client to help themselves.

In counseling we help the client to identify a problem, clarify conflicting ideas and support the client to identify alternative behaviours and help to deal with situations. Counseling could be practiced in five main steps.

1. Preparation

2. Initial session

3. Subsequent sessions

4. Building on success

5. Concluding the therapy

In preparation phase the counselor identifies the main point of the problem and tries to clarify it. Then the counselordiscusses with the client and agrees upon a proper and a realistic goal for the counseling sessions. Identifying the main goal that the counseling sessions should be focused on is the most important part in counseling. Then one has to discuss how to identify whether the pre-set goals have been achieved. The hard part is to understand how to achieve theagreed goals and build on the sessions. Once the agreed goals have been achieved, the counselor can end the therapy. The main way of conducting counseling sessions is by asking the client open ended questions. For example questions such as “How?”, “Why?”, “What happened?” etc. The counselor should develop a certain set of qualities prior to the counseling session.

As Carl Rogers has mentioned “It is important to maintain genuineness, unconditional positive regard and empathy during every counseling session”.

At the end of the counseling sessions, the client should possess adequate resources to cope with and resolve any other problems which may occur in their life.

1 Blood cultures 2 Citrate tube 3 Serum tube 4 Lithium Heparin tube 5 EDTA tube 6 Fluoride - oxalate

Correct puncture site Before performing venipuncture, alcohol should be allowed to air dry (haemolysis) Prolonged tourniquet time can lead to an increase in various chemistry analytes, including serum protein, calciumand lactic acid (haemoconcentration of blood at the puncture site) Avoid drip arms (diluted sample) As a general rule all the specimens must be centrifuged and separated within 2 hours of collection.
