The surfing contest will anchor an extreme sports festival that will run in Jeffreys Bay and environs during a one week period. This follows in the wake of the cancellation of the 6-star rated surfing event that forms part of the ASP World Tour. Billabong South Africa General manager Ernest Bendeman is upbeat about the tourna- ment. “In the absence of an ASP-rated event this year we would like to continue to support South African surfing,” said Bendeman. “This will ensure that the town of JBay has the opportunity to welcome surfers and visi- tors during the July School Holidays.” In its inaugural year this year, the contest will be presented as a Specialty Surfing Event, with an entry field of 64 surfers. The contest organisers are set to make an announcement in the next few days about some possible secondary divisions to run concurrently within the main surfing event. “It’s unfortunate that this event is at such short notice, but we’re going to pull a rabbit out of the hat and make it work,” said JBU Club Chairman Arthur Joubert. “We are con- fident that this competition will grow from strength to strength over the next few years and establish itself as a premier tournament on the surfing calendar.” The tournament is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa. THE long wait for Jeffreys Bay’s firstgovernment high school will soon beover as construction is in full swing
since the beginning of February this year.
After years of struggling with transport toand from high schools in Humansdorp - whichsaw many learners hitchhiking due to unaf-fordable transport costs or bus drivers strik-ing - more than seven years of planning arefinally bearing fruit with the construction ofthe first technical high school in the Kouga.
The long wait was due to the schools infra-structure backlog in the province.
The Eastern Cape Department of Educationand the Kouga Municipality attended the offi-cial sod-turning on Monday, marking the be-ginning of the end of the educational crisis inthe Kouga.
It is estimated that work on the school, tobe called the Jeffreys Bay ComprehensiveHigh School, will be finished on June 15, 2015.
The school, costing R80 million, will caterfor both academic and technical subjects. Itis specifically built between Tokyo Sexwaleand Ocean View to be central and cater for allresidents of Jeffreys Bay and surroundingtowns.
According to Johan van Dyk, regional di-rector of the Department of Roads and Public
Works, construction will take place in threephases.
“The first phase of the double storey buildingwill see the opening of 22 classrooms to accom-modate 1 000 learners, a media centre, securitybuilding, road network, water tower, fencingand an administration block,” said van Dyk.
“The second phase will see the constructionof workshops and sport facilities, while a hos-tel to accommodate 400 learners will be builtduring phase 3.”
Councillir Phumzile Oliphant said on Mon-day: “Today is a historical day. It marks thebeginning of the end of an educational crisisfacing the Kouga.
“This technical high school will address vari-
ous problems in the area and act as a catalystin response to the type of challenges we face inthe agricultural and fishing industries.
“This school will not only be open to learn-ers from Jeffreys Bay, but we encouragelearners from across the Kouga region to en-rol at the new school.”
According to Mzoleli Mrara, chairperson ofthe portfolio committee of the Department ofEducation, the school is more than just aproject. “It must also leave a good legacy forthe community - a legacy that will addresspoverty and unemployment in the area. Theschool must not be an ivory tower. It mustchange the face of the area and benefit themost disadvantaged communities.”

KOUGA Municipality is once again gear-ing up to train local young people whowould like to become lifeguards.
The training programme is an initiativeof the municipality’s lifesavers at DolphinBeach and will start in May.
Two of Kouga’s lifesavers, Zweli Mafutaand Bruce Macomas, are qualified exam-iners for Lifesaving South Africa.
They will test participants at the end ofthe training. Those who pass the exam willreceive a Swimming Proficiency Award(SPA) which is a world-wide recognisedlifesaving qualification.
A lifesaving club, the Jeffreys Bay Life-saving Club, was established last year in
preparation for the training. Membershipis open to anyone aged 16 to 30.
While participants should ideally be fit,you don’t need to be able to swim to enrol.Swimming lessons, from novice to ad-vanced, will be part of the training rou-tine.
Registration is free. Those interested can contact Zweli at
0 073 872 9943 or Bruce on 0 078 607 9206.Alternatively, visit them at the lifesavers’kiosk at the play area at Dolphin Beach,Jeffreys Bay.
The kiosk is open from 9am to 5pm,Mondays to Fridays, and from 9am to 1pm,Saturdays.
Train to be a lifeguard PAVEMENT-NIGHTMARE SOONTOBEOVER
Walking down Main Street in Humansdorpis like facing an obstacle course. Ifresidents are not dodging pot holes, theyare trying to avoid uneven heaps ofcement where the pavements were fixed. However, according to municipal spokesperson Mfundo Sobele, this pavementnightmare will soon be something of thepast. “The real problem is business ownersusing the pavement as a loading zonewhen it is not designed for such. Becausethere are services running underneath, thethin surface cannot absorb the pressure ofvehicles and gives in after a while. A jointmeeting between our technical, traffic andtown planning departments will take placewithin the next week to discuss variousoptions of dealing with the problem. Wewill consult with business owners and wehope to receive the necessary cooperationwhen we need to implement.”PHOTO:MONIQUE BASSON

PE Childline and Family centre - the largestchild protection organisation (NGO) in theprovince - recently celebrated the rebrandingand name change of the organisation.
The new name is Uviwe Child and YouthServices - Uviwe directly translated means“you are heard”.The current namechangewasbrought about
by two situations happening at the same time. The first situation was as a consequence of
disafilliation from Childline SA, while the sec-ond was the ongoing severity and widespreadoccurenceofchildabuseandsexualassault cas-es in communities.Whilst financial survival has become a day-
to-day struggle, its programmes remain key toprotect the rights of children in the Emtro. Theseverityandwidespreadof child abuseandsex-ual assault requires new, “out of the box” solu-tions. It iswithin this context that PEChildlineand Family Centre adapted its structure, serv-ices and partnerships.“We knew we were the biggest, we knew we
were good, but ‘Were we excellent?’ was thequestion we asked ourselves,” said OkkieSteyn, chairperson of Uviwe. He says having their own identity gives them
somuchplaywhere theyneed togooutandhelp.
Toassist themwith thedevelopmentof anewcorporate identity andnewbrand strategy theycontracted the expertise of Strategy Advertis-ing. The namewas proposed by two staff mem-bers of Uviwe through an internal brandingcompetition which was won by NomfunekoBungu and Phakamile Qobo.Warren Upton from Strategic Advertising,
said during the media briefing it was really anhonour to work with Uviwe. “They are such aspecial bunch of people to work with,” he said. The new logo represents a number of funda-
mental aspects that Uviwe stands for. The col-ours used are all vibrant, playful and speak ofhope for a brighter tomorrow in each child orfamily that is touched by the organisation. All their services remain the same - they
have only been improved. The focus area remains thewellbeing of chil-
dren in every community, and the service pil-lars include:.Champions of children’s rights - Every childis valued in its community and should be pro-tected and nurtured for a better community inthe future.Empowering communities - Starting atgrassroots and building communities that areeconomically self-reliantAgents of hope - Passionate about the poten-
tial in every child and the ripple effect it hason that child’s community
.Accessing new partnerships - Collaboratingwith the community, other organisations, sponsors and those who share the same enthu-siasm for the upliftment of the local communi-ty.
“We want to continue as champions for chil-dren’s rights.Wewant tostop tellingasadstorylike others, but celebrate the positive changemade in the lives of children thereafter,” saysAnna-Louise Olivier (director of Uviwe).

A “chokkamuseum”will soon be a real-ity once the Andejach, a retired chok-ka boat, has been restored to its
former glory.
The old Andejach ended up in the St FrancisBoatyard after it was replaced some years agoby the “new” Andejach, built to modern speci-fications by boat builders on the West Coast. The boat was named after owner-skipper
André de Jager, who knew the sea like thepalm of his hand and spent many years work-ing the ocean. Johan and Rita van Vuuren, owners of the boatyard donated the boat toJames and Karen Jooste from Little VeniceAdventures who will restore the boat. “Weare extremely happy that the Andejach willstay part of our community. We have been ad-vised many times to demolish it, but justcouldn’t,” a happy Johan said.“The boat is very old and neglected. It was
touch and go when Duncan Leithbridge jrmoved it to our premises in St Francis Drive, and we have to thank him for delivering theboat in one piece,” says James, who was also
injured during the move. “It will take a longtime and loads of money before we can openour “museum”, but it is our contribution toprotect this part of our heritage.”Port St Francis and St Francis Tourismwill
work with Little Venice Adventures to pro-mote and establish the Andejach as an iconfor the industry. “We will use it as part of ourPort Tours,” says Sam Bester of the Sustaina-ble Seas Centre, who runs these tours. “To re-ally understand what our fishermen endureat sea, youneed to get onto a chokkaboat your-self and see how small the working space andsleeping quarters are. People are not allowedonto aworking boat inside the Port, sowe can-not wait to get them onto the Andejach.”“Other than for educational purposes, the
boat will be used for children’s and other par-ties.”Anybody in the industry who might have
old equipment to restore this icon to itsformer glory must please contact James orKaren. “Any help will be appreciated, and wewill give then the necessary recognition.”For more information, contact Karen at

PERDE, motorfietse, vierwielmotorfietse, fietse en voete . .

TWO friends from Cape Town have embarkedon a nearly 6 000km walk, not only to raisefunds for those less fortunate, but also to bea blessing in the lives of people they meetalong the way.
Darryl (37) and Antony (35) embarked ontheir Feet4Feat journey from MuizenbergBeach in Cape Town on March 1 and almosta month later they reached the coastal townof Jeffreys Bay. From here they continuedtheir journey to Port Elizabeth.
“We walk so that we may learn to believe, and perhaps, we could fix some of the thingsthat are so wrong in the world” said Darryl.
“Our freedom can only be changed by uschanging our minds about how we see things, from the trying realities of our times, to themagic of the moment. We endeavor to alterforever the way we see our world and doing
what we can, to be the blessing we believe theworld to be.”
So, who do they help?“Anyone we can, really. If we can generate
some money, we can go to families out therethat are really struggling. We aim to identifythose that need to be helped. There are peoplethat are desperate, humble about it, and needit most. There are thousands out there. Itwould be a dream to help all of them, but whynot begin by helping those we can help now?Perhaps that too, like all things, will grow in-to what it really is meant to be,” said Darryl.
”We aim to assist those we meet, bringsome love, joy and relief to those that deservesome blessings.”
According to Darryl they will carry a SouthAfrican flagwith them for their entire journey.“We carry our flag with us, so that if we realiseour dream of meeting Nelson Mandela, we willgive him the flag from a grateful nation. Theflag will be full of signatures from the people

Within each and every person there are competing desires. And we play
different roles. We are pioneers, yearning for the wild. And we are mothers
and fathers, with families to care for. We are country bumpkins and we are
city dwellers. We explore. And we nest. We live indoors+outdoors. We
combine the mud with the tar.

FARMERS of Patensie have takenhands with Kouga Municipality todevelop soccer talent among theyouth of Ramaphosa Village.
The Patensie Citrus Football Club was for-mally launched at the Dan Sandi Hall onApril 18.
The launch was a festive affair, with mainsponsor Patensie Citrus handing over equip-ment and kit to the club, including soccertogs, bright orange jerseys, shorts, socks andfull protective clothing for the goalkeepers.
Two soccer nets, ten soccer balls, kit bagsand water bottles were also donated.
Patensieward councillor PatrickKota saidthat thevillagehadneverhada formal soccerclub, but that soccer had always played a bigrole in its sports culture.
“Patensie is known for the quality of itsrugby players. One of the reasons we havesuch incredible rugby talent is because theyoungsters start off by playing soccer beforemoving on to rugby when they’re older. It istheir formative years in soccer that givethem the edge on the rugby field,” he said.
The club consists of 48 players, aged from12 to 19years old, and is chairedbymunicipal
official Amos Mabukhane.Mabukhane said the clubwas testimony to
what could be achieved if communitiesworked together.
“The farmers are part of this community. They help to create jobs and opportunitiesfor those who live here. That is why it is im-portant that we, as a community, look afterour citrus industry,” he said.
Soccer player Luvuyo Kota echoedMabukhane’s words: “Wemust support eachother and walk hand in hand towards abright future.”
Gerhard Uys of Patensie Citrus said it wasa privilege for the company to be involvedwith the new soccer club.
“It is special to see somanyyoungpeople andpotential here today. We are one community. We live and work together. We will be watch-ing the progress the players make,” he said.
Mabukhane said the club was also gratefulto theGamtoos FarmersAssociation, headedby chairman Spes du Preez, and local farmerGert Rautenbach. Rautenbach paid theclub’s registration fees for the Cacadu Castleleague.
