Introduction1) To be able to determine

the correlation of diesel inhalation, alcohol consumption, and sugar intake with the time needed to learn the course of a maze

2) To be able to determine the effects of diesel inhalation, alcohol consumption, and sugar intake on coordination.

Results

Table 1. Effect of Alcohol Intake on Learning and Coordination

* 0.2 mL volume of 5% and 10% alcohol were administered through an improvised tube

Mouse Observations Time to Finish Maze (mm:ss)

1 (5% alcohol)* Normal movement speed, but kept missing the right path

7:50

2 (10% alcohol)* Lacking coordination in movement, followed the same path over and over again

More than 15 minutes

Control Normal 2:20

*amount of diesel 8 mL in Petri Plate covered in gauze

Mouse Observations Time to Finish Maze (mm:ss)

1 (15 mins.) Slow movements, didn’t eat food

03:01

2 (30 mins.) Slower movements, didn’t eat food

12:41

Table 3. Effect of Sugar Intake on Time to Finish the Maze

*A 15-minute cap was placed on the time, and Mouse 2 was not able to finish the maze.

Mouse Observations Time to Finish Maze (mm:ss)

1 (50% glucose) Faster movement, ate the food at the end of the maze

3:30

2 (5% glucose) Fast movement, hyperactive, climbed over the maze

15:00*

Control Normal 2:20

Discussion

a. Alcohol Consumption- Ethanol as a central nervous

system depressant- Nigrostriatal pathway- Memory, attention, sleep,

coordination, and judgment- Coordination: alcohol impairs

reaction time and mental acuity

- GABA and NMDA

Page 9: KOTAGIRI MELODY, LIMGENCO MARTHA, MENDOZA MIGUEL, NEVADO PAOLO, SANDOVAL PATRICIA, SOLIVEN MONIQUE Effects of Diesel Inhalation, Alcohol Consumption and.

Discussionb. Diesel Inhalation- Diesel vapour inhalation:

effect on the mobility - Hydrocarbons : decreases

the sensitivity of postsynaptic neurons ; hypoxia

- Respiratory depressionc. Sugar Intake- Increased blood sugar levels

in their blood- Influence memory, motor

function and sleep patterns

 Conclusion

- Study verified hypothesis about alcohol effects - Sugar intake results induced hyperactivity but does not

give a direct relation to coordination and learning patterns

- assumption: hydrocarbons are responsible for the sluggish movements of the mouse.

- long-term effects may also develop from regular and high - concentration exposure of diesel fuel ﴾e.g. lipoid pneumonia).

- A detailed study is therefore recommended to determine the specific compound(s) in diesel fuel and the pathway impaired by this compound(s) which cause the signs of toxicity.
