Summary reports of the results are available on our website un- der Information For/Current Parents. As mentioned previously, the Board and senior staff will be using the results to set priorities and directions for the next Strategic Plan. Year 7 students will shortly be using an iPad for their studies. The College Learning Technologies team and a number of staff have been planning how best to use these new technologies in class contexts and the Year 7 students will take part in a trial that will involve using the iPads in all their lessons. It is important to note that just because a particular technology exists, does not necessarily mean it can be used to enhance learning. Our Year 7s will help the College plan for the effective use of these devices in the classroom. Needless to say, staff involved in the trial are very excited to be using the new devices and have spent a considerable amount of time in preparation and in professional development. Special thanks to those students who have volunteered as ‘iAssist’s’ to help with the implementation of the iPads. Next term, Year 9 students will be given the opportunity to trial the use of the iPads in their learning context. Over the last few weeks students in Years 9 and 10 have attended information sessions regarding the next important steps in their secondary school careers. The courses on offer at Kormilda are necessarily diverse to cater for the interests of our students. It always surprises me that there is a perception that some courses are of more value than others, and in particular that NTCET is perceived as not as rigorous as IB. My Year 11 NTCET mathematics class would certainly disagree. Of great interest to parents and students at these information sessions are the uni- versity destinations of our recent Year 12 graduates. I include below a graphic that illustrates the extraordinary futures our students are being prepared for. You will note that a large number of graduates are choosing to study at Charles Darwin University. The College is developing a strong link with the University and I encourage students and parents to attend the Open Day at CDU this weekend. Leadership Advice Clontarf Academy Seniors get advice from the Prime MinisterKormilda’s senior Academy members took part in a Clontarf Leadership Day earlier this term.

Programme Coordinator Mr Charlie Shannon reports: with young men repre-senting so many di erent communities, it was a great sight watching the group bond and work together to achieve the targets set in each activity and, in partic-ular, the communication levels on the way to completing each task was impres-sive. Former AFL star player Michael McLean gave an inspirational talk on the challenges of taking on a leadership role early in the day, whilst Damian Hale, drew upon his experiences in federal politics and the NTFL to help broaden the group’s knowledge on decision making and leadership. However, before clos-ing, Mr Hale reached for his mobile and called in a little extra support. On the other end of the telephone was the Hon Julia Gillard, MP and Prime Minister of Australia. Ms Gillard spoke about leadership as the boys huddled around the speaker phone. Apparently, the looks of surprise on the faces of these young men were priceless as they tuned in to the Prime Minister.

Participants were: Cody Anderson, Jonus Babui, Austin Barney, Keanu Bob, Ty-rone Burns, Terrence Darby, Brandon De Santis, Jake Dudgeon, Jake Farrell, Ma-cauley Jabiard, Dakota Knight, George Kypreos, Darcy McBean, Scott McDinny, Relston Namarulga, Bevan O’Keefe, Harvey Rosewood, Owen Turner, Raymond Tipungwuti, Stanislous Tipungwuti, Boaz Thompson, Stephen Woodhouse and Allan Woolley.

Host Families Needed 17 - 23 OctoberKormilda College will be hosting a visit from one of our Indonesian part-ner schools, SMAN 15 Surabaya, from Monday 17 October to Sunday 23 October 2011. Kormilda College families are invited to provide accom-modation for one or two Indonesian students aged between 15 and 17 years during this visit. This is an ex-cellent opportunity to meet someone new and learn about their life and culture, as well as sharing your own culture and life with them. Please contact Ms Kathryn Luscher for more information (Email: [email protected] or tel: 8922 2557).

Annual Headmaster’s Cricket MatchThe annual Headmaster’s Cricket Match featured on the KCG earlier this month. The Headmaster’s XI; Ryan Ackers Captain, Adam Bayley, Terry Bayley, Steve Rudd, David Woerner, Mitch Mullen (alumni); Peter Bajcic, Jarrod Wiese, Martin Willoughby, Bar-ney Schwerin, David Jackson (sta ).

The Ist XI were keen to take the tro-phy with a solid batting performance. Brett Totham (39) and Matt Vaughan (12) started the innings well. After several wickets fell, Jack Anstey (32) and Kieran Marchant (22) settled the middle order with some excellent running. Dylan Mullen’s 13 o 6 balls showed him to be a promising crick-eter. Ryan Ackers 3 wickets, Jarrod Wiese 2/6 and Adam Bayley 2/12 were the pick of the bowlers. In reply the Headmasters team David Woerner (48 no), Terry Bayley (44), Ryan Ackers (23) hit to all parts of the eld with one Woerner hit on the top of the mound paced at over 100 metres. Jake Levick 1/6, Jordaan Ludwig 1/6, Tayler Mul-len 1/14 and Michael Levick 1/14 were the pick of the bowlers. Thank you to David Barrett for umpiring, to Robyn Levick for scoring, Mr Woerner and family for a luscious gourmet barbe-cue, and to Mr Jackson for preparing such an excellent wicket.

The Headmasters XI 4/159 (15 Overs) defeated Kormilda Ist XI 8/156 (20 Overs)

Writer’s ClubDoes your child enjoy writing? Why not encourge him or her to join our Writer’s Club - a friendly collection of writers who get together on Fridays at lunch time to produce well crafted poems, prose and scripts, and to talk about writing. Our writers can enter competitions or just write for their own enjoyment, eat snacks and share writing experiences. Students from across all years seem to enjoy the experience.

Special thanks to Anna Priore of The Bookshop Darwin (formerly Angus and Rob-ertson) for her donation of weekly book prizes that are helping to encourage our students in their literary endeavours. The English faculty are delighted by the en-thusiasm of the students who are producing some amazing works.

Taylor Mullen Yr 11 took eight wick-ets against PINT and in doing so se-cured a place in Darwin cricket his-tory. Taylor took 8 for 26 against the top four side to become the youngest player in Premier Grade to grab eight wickets.

Grace Fuller Yr 8, and her team won a Bronze medal at the 2011 School Sport Basketball in Canberra last week. They convincingly defeated NSW, Queens-land and Western Australia.

Hanna Ninan Yr 7, was chosen to be the Mathletics Math Challenge NT Ambassador. With this prestigious ti-tle also came an iPad.

Visit by NT LibraryJohn Richards, Manager Reference Services, Northern Territory Library visited Year 11 IB students recently to discuss library resources in prepa-ration for their 4,000 word Extended Essay. The presentation began with an evidence exercise based on books and documents regarding the ships actually in Darwin Harbour when the Japanese attacked in February 1942. Working through the references to the ships in various sources it soon became apparent that a Norwegian ship was not in Darwin Harbour at all on February 19th 1942 but had been sunk in the Atlantic in 1941. Mr Rich-ards used this example to illustrate that students need to be very careful when accepting sources, in regards to their reliability. The presentation, in-cluding an overview of the resources available in the NT Library, opened more avenues for our students to explore their own research with con dence.

RAAF Recruitment DriveIt’s time to Rise...The Royal Australian Air Force dropped in last week as part of a recruitment drive. Bringing a Hot Air Balloon with them, and with winds constantly changing, the win-dows of opportunity for a ride also changed somewhat, but for those Kormilda stu-dents who did get a lift – the experience was fantastic. Thank you to the RAAF team for selecting Kormilda as the venue.

Year 10s take part in Indonesian Independence Day CelebrationsOn Wednesday the 17th August we visited the Indonesian Consulate to celebrate the 66th Indonesian Independence Day. On arriving we were excited to see the red and white banners decorating the grounds of the Indonesian Consulate. The formal proclamation of Independence was rich with tradition, and the ag raising ceremony was a special highlight. This was particularly interesting for us as Year 10 students, as we have been studying Indonesian ceremonies and festivals this term in class.

After the formal part of the ceremony we enjoyed eating some tasty Indonesian food prepared for us. It was enak sekali!
