Termite facts

•Australia has approximately 300species of termite, of which about15 are likely to cause damage tothe structural timbers of houses.

•Termites are more closely relatedto cockroaches than ants.

•Of the three groups of termites(dampwood, drywood andsubterranean), subterraneanspecies cause by far the mostdamage to timber in service.

•The most common areCoptotermes, Schedorhinotermes,Nasutitermes and the giantnorthern termite Mastotermesdarwiniensis.

•Some species of timber areresistant to termites, but none is termite-proof. In practice, anystructure containing wood isexposed to possible subterraneantermite invasion unless protectivemeasures are taken.

•Termites will often damagematerials they cannot digest suchas plastics, rubber, metal or mortar.Primarily, this damage occurs whenthe indigestible items areencountered in the termites' search for food.

•Apart from a few grass-eatingspecies which forage in the open,all termites remain within a closedsystem of underground galleries orcovered runways that extend fromthe central nest to food sourcesabove or below ground.

•The gallery system of a singlecolony may exploit food sourcesover as much as one hectare,with individual galleries extendingfor up to 50 metres.

•Each termite colony is divided intothree castes: workers, soldiers andthe reproductive or alate caste.

•The alates are the potential kingsand queens of new colonies. Unlike the other two castes, theyhave eyes, functional reproductivesystems and wings. They leave the colony in swarms from spring to early summer or late summer to autumn.

•Traces of swarming alates areamong the few obvious signs oftermite activity. They normally swarmat dusk and may be attracted tolights at night, and are commonlyfound in spider webs.

Thismanual shows all the differentways in which Kordon can beinstalled to ensure that thewarranty is valid – and that Kordoncan be expected to remaineffective for over 50 years. How Kordon works

Kordon contains deltamethrin,a synthetic pyrethroid that killstermites which come into contactwith it. Equally importantly, though,deltamethrin is a powerful termiterepellent, so termites are veryunlikely even to approach thebarrier and attempt to breach it.

The deltamethrin is impregnatedinto a fibrous webbing which isthen laminated on both sides.

The top orange 200-micron plasticlayer provides the moisture vapourbarrier, while the bottom blackplastic layer encapsulates,protects and completes thephysical termite barrier.

Kordon is classified as a buildingproduct and it is approved for use in local government areas wheresoil termiticide treatments havebeen prohibited.

The extensive testing of Kordon byBayer and various independentauthorities has established thatthe barrier should remain effectivefor over 50 years – the commerciallife of a building.

Bayer back those findings withKordon’s 10-year $100,000structural timber replacementwarranty against termitepenetration when correctly installedby a currently accredited Kordoninstaller.

Once the building project iscompleted, Bayer and theaccredited installer provide acomplete set of documentation tothe building owner. Thesedocuments include:

Warranty


This warranty is granted by Bayer EnvironmentalScience ("Bayer") (ACN 000 226 022) of 391-393Tooronga Road East Hawthorn Victoria in respectof the installation of Kordon Termite Barrier("Kordon") in the Building.

This Warranty covers damage by SubterraneanTermites ("Termites") only.Bayer warrants that Kordon shall restrict the entryof Termites into the Building through the Kordonbarrier for a period of ten (10) years from the dateof installation ("Warranty Period").This Warranty covers damage by Termites tostructural timbers and internal timbers BUT DOESNOT INCLUDE damage by Termites to:

(a) chattels of any nature whatsoever including (butwithout limiting the foregoing) antiques, heirlooms,paintings, artwork; and(b) any pergolas, wiring, extensions to the Buildingand outhouses.

If Termite infestation of the Building occurs as aresult of the failure of the Kordon and damage byTermites is caused to structural timbers and/orinternal timbers fixtures and fittings during theWarranty Period, Bayer will without charge to theOwner:

(a) repair the Kordon barrier where practicable;(b) cause the repair or replacement of structuraltimbers and/or internal timbers so damaged.

To the extent permitted by the Law of the State orTerritory in which the premises are located:

(a) the liability of Bayer under this Warranty islimited to a maximum of $100,000.00 in respect ofany one (1) warranty claim.(b) All representations and other warranties expressor implied and whether arising by virtue of Statuteor otherwise are excluded or limited as stated in thisWarranty.

This Warranty shall only have effect if the Kordon isinstalled by a Bayer Accredited Installer.

OWNER'S RESPONSIBILITIESThe Owner of the Building during the WarrantyPeriod ("Owner"), at the Owner's expense, arrangefor thorough and regular inspection of the Buildingfor the presence of termites at intervals notexceeding 12 months by an accredited/licencedTimber Pest Inspector.Where the Termite risk is high (e.g. North of the26th parallel) more frequent inspections (3-6months) should be undertaken.These inspection recommendations comply withthose outlined in AS 3660 Termite ManagementSeries and AS 4349.1-1995, Inspection of buildings.If Termites are detected or are found to havebreached the Kordon barrier, the Owner must,within 7 days of such detection, notify Bayer.

EXCLUSIONS This Warranty shall be void and have no effect in any ofthe following circumstances:

The Kordon barrier is damaged, modified, bridged orotherwise interfered with by any person or any act, fact,matter or thing beyond the reasonable control of Bayer.The Building is structurally modified, altered or otherwisechanged in any way which would or may diminish theeffectiveness of the Kordon as a Termite barrier.If at any time during the Warranty Period, the Owner

(a) allows or fails to prevent accumulation of: (i) wood, rubbish or timber against the Building; AND (ii) finished ground level around the Building to aheight which does not comply with the terms of theInstallation Manual.(b) allows the barrier dividing the soil surface and thestructure of the Building formed by the Kordon to bebridged or broken by any other material or matterthrough which Termites may by-pass the Kordon andinfest the Building.

Termites shall enter the Building through any mannerother than by a breach of the Kordon barrier.If the Kordon is installed other than by an BayerAccredited Installer.

Bayer will grant additional specific warranty conditions where requiredto accommodate high density, commercial constructions, governmentbuildings, etc on documented request.
