Heat Wave Leads To More Power UseTe sustained heat wave province-wide is having an
mpact on electricity demand. On Saturday evening, BCHydro recorded an increase of 15% in the peak hourlyoad over Saturday last week. Te peak hourly load – the
highest hourly demand observed throughout the day –was 861 megawatts higher than the previous Saturday. OnSunday, there was an increase of 10% or 617 megawatts, inthe peak hourly load over the previous Sunday.
Te increases are more than the equivalent of running
an additional generating unit at the Mica dam and gen-erating station – one of the largest generating stations inthe province.
BC Hydro expects the higher than normal electricitydemand to continue throughout the week as temperatures inthe province climb. Although there is a signicant increasen provincial electricity load during a sustained heat wave,
BC Hydro still records the highest demand in the winter.

Tere are a number of ways British Columbians cansave money during the heat wave.
• Keep the blinds down: shade your windows andblock up to 65% of the heat.
• Use a ceiling fan: ceiling fans are the most effi -cient option for cooling. Ensure the fan is rotatingcounter-clockwise.
• Keep the clothes dryer off: hang your laundry todry and avoid the clothes dryer to keep unneces-sary heat out of your house.
