Cougars In KasloTere have been multiple cougar sightings in our area
this winter. Deer are the cougar’s primary ood source, and in the winter season deer and other prey animals areusing low elevation habitats. Cougars will ollow theirprey into these areas, which ofen overlap with our com-munities and agricultural lands.
In North America, roughly 25 atalities and 95 non-atalcougar attacks have been reported during the past 100 years. However, more cougar attacks have been reported in the
western United States and Canada over the past 20 yearsthan in the previous 80 (though this may be because thereare more people on the landscape than in previous decades).
Conicts with cougars are rare, but it’s a good idea toknow how to avoid encounters and what to do i you dosee a cougar. Te most important thing i you see a cougar
is to NEVER RUN.Te cat may thensee you as prey andgive chase. Speak ina loud and rm voiceto reinorce that youare not an easy target, and be prepared toght back in the veryunlikely event thatthe cougar attacks.
Managing oodattractants is alsonecessary, much inthe same way as orbears. Garbage, ruit, and pet ood attract small mammals that can then attractcougars to approach homes, and cougars are known to eatpet ood that is accessible (look at the picture o the prettykitty on your cat ood bag!).
Keeping a clean yard helps to keep wildlie away. Alsokeep your pets close to you and inside at night as they couldprovide a ood source or a hungry cougar or coyote. It’salso important to keep chickens locked up at night to pro-tect them rom cougars, coyotes, or bobcats which are alsopushed into low elevation habitats in winter.
Kaslo WildSaeBC educates on wildlie/human coexis-tence to keep wildlie wild and communities sae. Go towww.WildSaeBC.com or more ino.
Wildlie or saety concerns should be reported to theConservation Offi cer Service at: 1-877-952-7277.

In the early hours o a winter morning, February 3, 2015,Jean Stiven (Mom, Granny, Great Granny, Jean, ‘theHonourable Niz’), ollowed a path only she could see and
lef us here to continue our stories. Would that ours be asinteresting as hers…
Born in London, England in 1926, to Alec and Dorothy Nisbet (née Lupton), Jean grew up inOxord with her brother, Angus. She was a quiet, studious child with a yen or adventure; anavid reader, she did well at school. She went on to receive a Masters Degree (Chemistry) romOxord University (1947) and worked or a year as a research chemist. She enjoyed hiking, bi-cycling, Scottish country dancing and theatre. While at university Jean met and married DavidStiven, a Forestry student rom Scotland. Jean was embraced by the large, boisterous Stiven clan.In 1951, afer the birth o their rst child, Jean and David immigrated to Canada. David’s workled them to Auden, Sioux Lookout, Shoal Lake and Arden beore they decided to go overseasto work or the United Church o Canada. By this time three more children had arrived, David
had taken three years o theological training in Winnipeg and had been ordained as a minister.Troughout, Jean had maintained the household in ofen challenging conditions.
In her new role as minister’s wie, Jean accompanied the amily on a circuitous route throughWisconsin, USA, by sea to Portugal and on to spend ve interesting years in Ndola, Zambia(1961-1966) … all this with our children in tow. Teir fh child was born in Ndola.
Te amily returned to Winnipeg or a year beore spending two years in Kingston, Jamai-ca. Tere Jean taught at the local high school while the household expanded to include twoJamaican students, Pauline and Joan. Joan returned to Canada with the amily and was offi ciallyadopted in 1972.
Afer Jamaica, the amily spent another year in Winnipeg, where Jean took a job in a researchlaboratory at the University o Manitoba – a brie opportunity to apply her ormal education.
In 1970 the amily moved to Victoria, British Columbia, where, in addition to her amily andchurch (Gordon United) roles, Jean became a Medical Offi ce Assistant, a job she excelled atand thoroughly enjoyed. Te early-mid 1980s were dark years or Jean, with the death o twodaughters, and a divorce rom David.
Jean retired in 1987 afer meeting the second love o her lie, Gordon Davidson, an electricalengineer and inventor, who respected her vast knowledge and experience, and adored her.ogether they enjoyed many travels.
In 2013, afer Gordon’s death, Jean moved to Kaslo to live with her daughter, Fiona. Although
she could no longer write, she loved reading, being outside, and watching the birds and pass-ers-by; she loved owers, marzipan bars, and ice cream; and she loved the visits she had romamily and riends.
Her most remarkable gif to the amily was her love o words: reading, letter-writing, story-telling, crosswords… She held the extended amily together with her words – almost withoutexception they were quiet, thoughtul words. Someone with this love o words would, o course, have had a motto. Hers was Life is a Rich and Rewarding Adventure, and hers was.
Jean was pre-deceased by David, Gordon, Peggy, and Joan. Tose who walked with her as ar aspossible are her children Moira McIlwain (Ray), Jim Stiven, Fiona Anderson (Peter Chomitz),Shelagh Cronkite (George); Pauline Beaumont, Anne Walli, Diana Davidson; Don Ilich; BettyPerson; her grandchildren Ken, Andrew, Heather, Ruth; Iain, Alastair; Meg, essa; Colin,Graham, Jill; Genevieve, Mackenzie, James. Her great grandchildren Lauren, Kara; Claire, Sam;Danika, Keighley, Marek; Ray; Amélie; Nova, Raleigh; aryn, Owen; Deeken, Cedrick; theStiven clan (especially Bob and Marlene); her brother, Angus Nisbet; and her lielong riend,Dola Richardson.
And her words and wisdom will inuse our stories…
A memorial service will be held at Gordon United Church in Victoria, BCat 2:30pm, March 28, 2015
