nclusion of people with specialneeds has been a fundamentalprinciple of Reena since itsinception in 1973. Inclusion is the

foundation that informs all theplanning, programs and services thatReena offers. At Reena we strive for atime when the principles of inclusionand acceptance will be entrenched ascommon practice, and when peoplewith disabilities can fully participate ineducational, spiritual, communal, socialand recreational activities. It isgratifying to see these principlesbecome embedded in provinciallegislation and in Jewish communallife. We are delighted to tell you abouttwo special initiatives taking place overthe next year that do just that.

The Accessibility for Ontarians withDisabilities Act (AODA) of 2005 sets outaccessibility standards that willidentify, remove and prevent barriersfor daily living for people withdisabilities. We are happy to report thatReena’s proposal to the EnAblingChange program of the Ministry ofCommunity and Social Services hasreceived funding to design a pilotprogram to develop educational tools, resources and best practices forsynagogue outreach.

Many studies and anecdotalevidence support the importance ofpersonal faith and spirituality in thelives of people with disabilities andtheir families. Congregational life canact as a valuable support mechanism.Removing existing barriers insynagogues will improve accessibilityto the full participation in faith andreligion that other Ontarians mayenjoy.

While many synagogues are alreadyembracing people with disabilities, thisproject will support synagogue admini-strations in implementing policies andprocedures that are consistent with thecore principles of independence, integration and equality ofopportunity. Through the EnAblingChange program we will be able to

work within the Jewish community todevelop customer service trainingprograms to educate synagogues abouttheir responsibilities under AODA tomake their congregations barrier-free.We will offer training for ushers, boardmembers, volunteers and lay leadershipon the customer service standards ofAODA so they can meet theirobligations under the Act.

A long-term aim of this program is todevelop inclusion committees withinindividual congregations. Thesecommittees will reinforce the giventraining and take a leadership role incontinuing education after thecompletion of the project. We will assistin the implementation of policies andprocedures that support thesemeasures, and will work towards theestablishment of a city-wide inclusionnetwork. We will also create toolkitswith templates, tip sheets and samplepolicies and procedures, anddisseminate the toolkit to other faithand culture organizations for sector-wide compliance with AODA. This willreduce the costs, learning curve, andstaff requirements that may otherwiseinhibit sector-wide faith and culturalorganizations from offering fullparticipation to people with disabilities.

Reena is proud of the leadership roleit is taking in enabling synagogues tocontinue to be more inclusive andpleased to work with the province insupporting other faith and cultureagencies servicing people withdisabilities in meeting accessibilitystandards across the sector. Inclusion Week – February 2009The mission of the Inclusion Initiative ofUJA Federation is to lead and promotefull participation in Jewish life forpeople with disabilities and theirfamilies within the Jewish community. Its goal is to inform, inspire and engagethe entire Jewish community inachieving inclusion for people withspecial needs across the broad range ofcommunity life.

complex and highlighted a number ofthe critical parts.

The Developmental Services Act is 35years old. Bill 77, the Services forPersons with DevelopmentalDisabilities Act, if passed, wouldreplace the existing Act. The proposedlegislation recognizes that, with theright supports, individuals withdevelopmental disabilities can liveindependently and thrive in theircommunities. A clear definition of“developmental disability”, a changein the tone of language, more choiceand control over the supports received, and a change in attitude that is longoverdue, were some of the pointsCousins covered in her remarks.

She continued, “There are peopleand agencies that are overwhelmed bythe scope of change proposed by thenew legislation. But the changes needto happen to improve service, increasechoice and improve fairness forindividuals and their families. At theend of the day, agencies will continue

to deliver services. But, direct funding, application centres, and new eligibilitycriteria and definition ofdevelopmental disability, will all meanthat agencies must be flexible. Reena isone agency that consistently showsflexibility and the ability to respond tothe needs of those they serve. Theministry has no doubt that Reena willevolve to meet the challenges andseize the opportunities thatDevelopmental ServicesTransformation will bring.”

The annual meeting marked the endof Helen Vale’s term as Chair of theReena Board. “During my term asChair, I am thrilled to have witnessedthe creative solutions to age-oldconcerns to help families cope withhousing, summer activities, transitionfrom school to adulthood, the openingof three homes, the creation ofPathways to the Community and theintroduction of an integrated campingexperience for children with adevelopmental disability.” Helen

expressed her admiration for theReena staff who, under the leadershipof the indomitable President & CEOSandy Keshen, demonstrate a highlevel of expertise, commitment andcare in helping people with adevelopmental disability to live safelyin the community with dignity andrespect.

Carolynn Morrison, Chair of theNominations Committee thankedoutgoing board members HeatherGoose, Steve Sherman and HelenVale. We Reflect on the Summer PastBy: Ann Szabo, Manager, Resource Managerm Outreach & Respite Services

Reena Foundation Awardsrank A. Wilson, Chair, reported that the ReenaFoundation had achieved much over the past year, due in no small measure to the strong team of

Board and Board Committees that the Foundation hasput in place. He highlighted the top three priorities forthe Foundation for the coming year.

First and foremost, is a major fundraising campaign toraise $18million to build the Reena CommunityResidence at the Wolf and Joseph Lebovic CommunityCentre. Under the leadership of Tobie Bekhor andIrving Feldman, this campaign will raise dramaticallymore money than the Reena Foundation has ever comeclose to in previous years.

Next, the Foundation remains completely committedto funding the Respite and Enrichment Programs atReena which last year equated to a cheque to Reena inthe amount of $400,000.

And thirdly, of equally high importance is to ensurethat the New Leadership Group of Reena Foundation, chaired by Steven Weisz, remains strong and vibrantand continues to attract the very cream of the up-and-coming philanthropic leadership.

He thanked outgoing members of the Foundationboard Ruth Berger, Judy Bronfman, Jennifer Jackson,Sheila Libfeld, Carolynn Morrison and SeymourSchwartz: and welcomed six new board members.

lthough summer has come and gone; let us take amoment to reflect and remember it at this time ofthe year. The warmth and excitement of the summer

programs at Reena will live in the memories of the children, youth and adults who attended them. Over 150 individualsparticipated in one or more of the summer programs thispast season.

Summer Recreation North and South ran for nine weekswith daily activities that included sports and recreation, artsand crafts, social skills, community outings in Toronto andYork Region; special guests who performed their magic forthe campers and staff alike. Each year this program grows incapacity and quality because we are able to offer it to morechildren and youth while keeping the program fresh andexciting. Unlike other camps that end at 3:00 p.m., SummerRecreation is open for business from 9-4:00 p.m., Monday toFriday. This program has fostered many youth to learn andgrow as volunteers, staff and participant, while providinginclusion in the community.

Although we had a lot of rain this summer, the campNorthland Experience will be remembered by the 17

children who attended one or more 10-day sessions in thebeautiful hills of Haliburton. They participated in all thecamp activities including water front frolic, rock climbing, arts and crafts, sports, evening programs and meals whilesleeping in their own cabins. For some children full inclusionwas on the roster. Four children joined in the last session ofcamp for full inclusion with some support from Reena staff. This was the third year we partnered with Camp Northlandand it will not be the last.

Another partnership that was fun and exciting thissummer was the Camp Arrowhead day camp on the shoresof Lake Simcoe. Many children did not have a lot of summeroptions available to them. We expanded our Sunday Friendsprogram by adding a summer session called Sunday in theSun that included four Sundays at the beautiful waterfront ofCamp Arrowhead and four Sundays at different beaches inthe GTA.

Reena’s Camp Northland and Sunday in the Sun programshave been funded in part by: Reena Foundation, the MiriamAlkin Memorial Fund, the Lorne and Carol Goldstein FamilyEndowment Fund and Donna and Howard Winik.

OPADD has been approved to become a member of theprovincial videoconferencing system available through theOntario Telemedicine Network (OTN). The approvalincludes acquisition and installation of a videoconferencingsystem that will allow the Ontario Partnership to connectwith its regional committees, local projects, partners andothers with an interest in aging and developmentaldisabilities.

The OPADD Project requested that the installation bemade at Reena. Reena hosts the provincial meetings ofOPADD and plays a pivotal role in ensuring that thepartnership is a viable and effective force for systemicchange.

The videoconferencing system will allow OPADD to linkinto other existing videoconferencing sites across Ontario. This will support greater participation at provincialmeetings for people across Ontario and ensure that eachregion has a voice at the table. People can travel to their

nearest videoconferencing site to link up with others acrossthe province.

This videoconferencing capacity can be used not only formeetings of the provincial table, but also meetings ofOPADD Task Groups and Regional Co-chairs. Thevideoconferencing facility can open new avenues fortraining and development of staff within the two sectors. For example, videoconferencing may be used to deliver anadapted U-First! training curriculum and portions of theReena/George Brown College Developmental DisabilitiesCounsellor program offered in partnership with Kerry'sPlace Autism Services, Montage Support Services, NewLeaf: Living and Learning Together Inc., New VisionsToronto, and The Salvation Army Broadview Village.

The installation is expected to be completed by midDecember. OTN will then provide training to identified staffat Reena who will take responsibility for use of the equip-ment. Videoconferencing should commence early in 2009.

Music with a differenceBy Robert Clarke, Support Worker

Dr. Reza Moridi, MPP for Richmond Hill andParliamentary Assistant to the Minister ofTraining, Colleges and Universities, addressed the Provincial Legislature onMonday, Sept. 22nd, 2008

Mr. Reza Moridi: I rise today to speak of anorganization known as Reena, a not-for-profit socialservice agency established thirty-five years ago thatprovides residential support for over 300 adults as wellas outreach programs that enhance the lives ofdevelopmentally disabled individuals. In addition,Reena provides valuable internships to post-secondarystudents. Every year, Reena offers close to 5,000 trainingplaces to 50 external agencies. Reena has established anaccredited program in partnership with George BrownCollege.

This summer, I had the privilege of attending thegraduation ceremony of Reena's developmentaldisabilities counsellor program at this college. I also hadthe opportunity of visiting Reena's facilities, including afamily home centre in Richmond Hill, and saw first-hand the dedication and contribution of themanagement, staff and volunteers.

I wish to thank all those who work in the field ofdevelopmental services. Due to their dedication andhard work, our society can move forward together andmore people will be able to live with independence, dignity and self-reliance.

It is my pleasure to acknowledge the contributions ofSandy Keshen, CEO; Carolynn Morrison, past chair;Tali Nizic, a vice-chair of Reena; and their colleagues inthe members' gallery.

One, two, three shouts the loud voice of Michael Raznickand the over eighty member choir (clients and staff) sing:

“Rise and shine and give G-d the glory, Rise and shine and give G-d the glory, Children of the Lord…”

With the skilful fingers of Sybil Rabinowitz, our musicvolunteer, clients and staff gather around the piano eachMonday morning for a time of inspirational singing. Werock the Battle Centre with songs like: “The more we aretogether, the happier we shall be” You are my sunshine,my only sunshine” and “Old McDonald had a farm.”

Music is designed to inspire and stimulate the mind topositive things. Every time we meet for musicappreciation, clients choose songs that they like to sing.Everyone sings joyfully, laughing and high-fiving oneanother for the choice of songs.

Songs are placed in groups and each group has itspurpose:

• Gross motor: movement activity of music• Oral motor/articulation: songs or activities to practice

blowing, tongue movement, lip rounding and specificspeech sounds.

• Language: songs and activities to develop vocabularycomprehension of language.

• Fine motor: finger-play activities and instrument use.Sometimes clients and staff may not produce the perfect

“Sound of Music,” but who cares about how long thenotes are held or how beautiful the facial expressions are,it’s all about making the week ahead of us work. Yes,music works; it plays a big part in our lives every Mondaymorning. Come and join us.

Special thanks to Karen MacKenzie-Stepner – Speechand Language pathologist and Sybil Rabinowitz –Volunteer Pianist – who greatly help uswith our Music Communication Program.

This program at Reena is enabledthrough contributions tothe Music EndowmentFund created at the ReenaFoundation. If you wouldlike to donate to theMusic Maker programplease call Shari at theFoundation office 905-764-1081.

O

September 5, 2008

I am a Reena Board member, but I am composing this

letter as a parent of a Reena client.

I attended the Reena Impact Day on September 5, and I

feel compelled to tell you about its impact on me.

This was such a wonderful event! Every individual from

Deloitte was enthusiastic and welcoming. They

participated with such fervour and spirit. Their passion

was infectious; this was clear on the faces of the Reena

clients. Quite honestly, it was difficult to determine who

was enjoying themselves more. I was so moved by the

generosity of the Deloitte individuals and by their

dedication to Reena.

For too many corporations, the commitment to inclusion

is a mere platitude. It is evident that, at Deloitte, that

commitment is met by generous, steadfast action. Please

convey to everyone at Deloitte this parent’s appreciation

for their efforts.

Thank you, Esther Yermus

Synagogues embrace Reena Clients

t is with deep sadness that we announce that oneof our young Outreach clients has passed away.Avi Spiegel was a happy 12-year-old boy who had

attended our Summer Recreation as well as theSunday Friends Club for several years. You couldusually see Avi walking around theBattle Centre with his worker,Arvin. He always had amischievous smile on his face.

Avi loved coming to programs atReena and always enjoyedparticipating in all the activitiesoffered, in particular he lovedswimming and water play. Avi hada way of lighting up the room, andmaking everyone feel welcome. His friends and staff would always take time to greethim, and spend a moment with him.

He will be greatly missed by all. Our thoughts arewith his parents, Malka and Elliot Spiegel, at this time.

He will be sadly missed by all hisfriends and staff, but in particularby Winifred Carney who was hissupport worker for over 10 years. They loved to go out to the movies(the picture show) to eat, and to goto the theatre. They also went outfor long walks in theneighbourhood.

From the moment George moved into Crestwood hebrightened up the place with his lively singing voice.George loved music and was always singing. Heseemed to know the words to every song ever written.Parades were his favourite entertainment. Georgealways spoke about parades he had either been to orwas going to and would sing parade type songs inanticipation.

Clients gave thanks this New Year by celebrating the yearpast with lots of food, drink and honey cake! The residentsof 21 Manadon enjoyed dipping apples in honey, thinkingahead to their New Year and all the things they would liketo accomplish.

Louise Atman, Mark Schecter and Renee Bloom enjoyedthe opportunity to attend Beth Tzedec’s holiday serviceswith many blessings from the Rabbi and community alike.Renee sang along to some of her favourite childhoodhymns and listened eagerly to the Torah and Shofarservices. Before leaving synagogue, both Renee and Louiskissed the Torah as the Rabbi came around, Max made timefor a prayer by himself and Renee made a special prayerfor her mother.

All three residents had many laughs and smilesthroughout the two days of services, and looked forwardto coming home and sharing their stories with theirhousemates.

Something tells us here at 21 Manadon that it will surelybe a Happy and Sweet New Year.

ver the past few issues I havefocused my message on themajor capital campaign that

we are now actively developing. Thiswill no doubt be the focus of all ourefforts over the coming 12 months aswe try to raise the funds required forthe new Reena Community Residenceon the Joe and Wolf Lebovic JewishCommunity Campus in north Vaughan.

We are very excited about taking onthis project – the biggest campaign thatReena Foundation has everundertaken.

It will take extraordinary leadership –and we have found just that in ourcampaign co-chairs, Tobie Bekhor andIrving Feldman. Tobie and Irving areactively seeking out a fundraising teamthat will help us meet the challenge ofan $18 million campaign effort. I inviteanyone reading this message, anyonewho agrees that the building of aresidence for people with disabilities inthe heart of a vibrant JewishCommunity Centre is good for peoplewith disabilities and good for thecommunity, to call us and get involved

in our fundraising efforts– we needyou.

It will also take a mobilizedcommunity. It has often been statedthat the measure of the greatness of asociety is how we treat our mostvulnerable. It is time. It is time that weall stand up and speak out for peoplewith developmental disabilities. It istime that our community acceptspeople with developmental disabilitiesin every walk of life. It is time that westop putting up barriers to integration.

UJA Federation, as a full partner inour campaign, has made a very boldstatement of acceptance by putting thenew Reena Community Residencefront and centre on The Joe and WolfLebovic Jewish Community Campus.Let us all follow that example and getinvolved – support the campaign andmake this project a reality. It will be thefirst of its kind in North America and itwill set the standard for care of peoplewith disabilities for generations tocome.

Get involved. Give generously.Thank you

I recently had the opportunity to sit with Leon and FranKieselstein and to discuss their desire to include Reena intheir estate planning. Leon and Fran were the recipientsof this year’s Family Philanthropy Award because of theircompassionate and generous support of Reena. Theywere eager to share their reasoning for including Reenain their wills because they hoped their story wouldinspire others to do the same. Here is their story.

“Daniel Duschinsky, a long timerecipient of services from Reena, ismy sister’s son.” began Fran. “Beforebeing introduced to Reena and thewonderful programs it offers, Dannywas introverted, lonely and afraid ofmany, many things that heencountered in day-to-day life. As aresult he did not get out and he didnot grow as an individual. In turn,my sister was very protective ofDanny, but always fearful of whatwould eventually happen to Danny. As parents of a child with adevelopmental disability it is aconstant concern. Most parentscannot comprehend the anxiety of notknowing what will happen to yourchild when you are gone. It was aconstant stress.

“Then Danny went on a BirthrightIsrael trip with Reena – it changedhis life. Danny became more and more involved with Reena andits various programs and today Danny is sociable and heintegrates easily with people. This has allowed my sister moretime for herself and allowed her to give Danny moreindependence. She now knows that Danny will be in goodhands.

“We have always considered ourselves to be a charitablefamily” says Leon, “but ten years ago we were not in a positionto give very much in the way of time or financial resources.Today we consider ourselves blessed and we believe that it isimportant to give back. We have chosen Reena as our focus, notonly because of Danny, but because we have seen first hand how

Reena can profoundly touch lives. We didn’t want to put ourfocus on a large organization where our gifts might beswallowed up in a giant bushel – it is great to see the differenceyour donation can make to a vulnerable life.

“We established The Kieselstein Family Endowment Fund afew years ago and we continue to support it whenever we can.Endowments will ensure that there is a strong and vibrant

Reena long after we are gone. Animportant part of building thatendowment fund for us is a giftfrom our estate. Our children areso proud to be a part of thissupport. We are now in a positionwhere our kids are grown andlooked after so we have includedReena in our wills – and it isimportant that our children willcontinue the tradition we havebegun.

“We truly believe that our livesstarted to get better when westarted to do things for otherpeople. We have seen first handthat you do get back in variousways what you give. But moreimportantly, we are not alone inthis world and we have anobligation to give back. We aretruly thankful that there is aReena and we are proudsupporters.”
