Some Thoughts on the Sidra By Rabbi Michael Laitner
Kindness: ideal preparation for Rosh Hashanah
‘An Amonite and a Moavite shall not enter into the community of God. Even their tenth generation shall not enter into the community of God. Because they did not come forward to you with bread and water, on the way when you left Egypt and because they hired Bilam ben Be’or from Petor in Aram Naharayim to curse you… .’ (Devarim 23:4-5)
Amon and Moav were kingdoms situated on the eastern side of the River Jordan, to the north and south of the Dead Sea. Neither those kingdoms nor ‘Moavites’ or ‘Amonites’ have survived the sands of history.
Why is a failure to offer bread and water to hungry travellers in the desert serious enough to bar entry into the community of God, even up to the 10th generation?
The great medieval commentator, Rabbi Ovadia Seforno (aka ‘Seforno’) notes that Moav did in fact offer bread and water – but at a price (see Devarim 2:28-29). Moav added to its folly by hiring Bilam to curse us. Amon did not offer any refreshments at all. The Torah lists all of these infractions together to show how serious they were, since the common theme underlying them was a dislike of the Jewish people with intent to cause us harm.
Why though is Moav criticised for trying to cut a deal by charging for bread and water? Why should Moav lose out?
Another great medieval commentator, Rabbi Moshe ben Nacham (aka ‘Ramban’), notes that both Amon and Moav had benefited from the kindness of Avraham when Avraham went out of his way to help his nephew Lot , such as rescuing Lot after his capture at Sedom (see Bereishit chap. 14).
Lot was the founding father of Amon and Moav. Accordingly, the Amonites and Moavites should have repaid the favour to Abraham’s descendants, welcoming them with requisite chesed, kindness, rather than charging them. This may be why Amon and Moav are criticised for charging the Jewish people for bread and water.
Developing this theme, Rabbi Avigdor Nebenzahl, the rabbi of the Jewish Quarter in the Old City, writes that Moav and Amon’s lack of chesed is what stops them from entering the community of God (see the start of our quoted verses). Chesed is an inherent part of a Jew. Internalising our commitment to chesed, and putting it into practice through performing acts of kindness with particular attention to doing so as a mitzvah, is especially important preparation for Rosh Hashanah as we seek to strengthen mitzvah commitment at the core of our daily activities.
