Koh Samui, or “Samui” for vernacular speakers, is located in the Gulf of Thailand. It is the second largest island inThailand after Phuket and measures 25 kilometres at thewidest point. The main road runs along the beautifulcoastline and is approximately 51 kilometres long. Incontrast to the stunning beaches, the central part of theisland consists of a tropical, jungle mountain.
The island was inhabited centuries ago by shermen from China. Today the island is a melting pot of people cominghere from all four corners of the world. The island appealsjust as much to the mega-rich as the backpackerstravelling on a budget.
The largest and most popular area is located on the east side of the island and is called Chaweng. Chaweng, thecurrent hub of Koh Samui, is located near the airport andoers beautiful golden sand stretches, bars, restaurantsand shops. Nathos is located on the west side of the islandand is the old capital of Koh Samui. This is still the mainport, business district and the centre of the shingindustry. Wat Plai Laem is one of Koh Samui's most attractive temples. This fairly new sight was completed in 2004 andis a colourful complex with a traditional Thai-Chinesestyle. On Koh Samui you will get by easily with "Songthaews", motor bike taxis and taxis. The Songthaews are the mainmeans of transportation on the island and you shouldexpect to pay approximately 30-50Bath. They operatefrom early morning regularly during the day. The motorbike taxis are about the same price.
A exible way to discover the island is to rent a motorbike or Jeep. But be careful on the roads, Samui has thehighest road accident statistics in Thailand.

You can also use the metered taxis for getting around the island. Taxis are a bit more expensive than songthaews,but a great way for travelling comfortably. Insist on usingthe meter.
You can nd several pharmacies around the island. In Chaweng there are two Boots pharmacies. There are alsonumerous pharmacies in Lamai oering pharmaceuticals.
Opening hoursMost shops and restaurants on Koh Samui have long opening hours. The shops in Lamai and Chaweng aregenerally open from 11am-11pm/12am and in Bathon from10am-6pm. Banking hours are from 8.30am-3.30pm duringthe weeks.
