Sunday, October 15th & 16th – Recruitment Drive after all the
Masses at St. Aidan’s Church. I am asking for your help in making
sure that they run successfully. Please contact myself or any other
officer to offer assistance in any way that you can. In closing, I
implore every member to not hesitate in apprising myself or any
other officer of any advice or suggestions that you may have. This
is your council. Vivat Jesus, SK Peter Zayas, Grand Knight The
Right Corner: No more pencils, No more books, No more Teachers
dirty looks: Forget textbooks and handouts. Forget No. 2 pencils.
And if you're looking for curricula for science or English class,
go online. Classwork is guided and shaped by 21st-century tech
tools, providing an intriguing glimpse at what schools may look
like in the future. Artificially intelligent software is replacing
the textbook—and reshaping American education. Today students file
into a brightly lit classroom. Arrayed around its perimeter are
computers. The students take their seats, log in to their machines,
and silently begin working. At a desk in the back, is a screen that
displays a series of spreadsheets and data visualizations to help
the teacher track each student’s progress in real time. In many
classes, students write and edit reports together on an Internet
site that lets them collaborate from their individual netbooks. In
some classrooms, technology is transforming education into a
process that actively engages students by using new tools and
devices -- replacing a teacher-centered model with a
student-centered one. This example helps highlight the difference
between 20th century teaching and today's technology in education
movement. The goal of the former is to teach kids computer skills.
The goal of the latter is to find innovative ways to integrate
technology into the educational process. This new kind of education
plan calls for employing technologies that are used every day at
home and at work to improve the way students learn. But given that
most students are using technology after school and on weekends,
merely having computers available isn’t good enough anymore. More
and more experts are saying teachers need
to show students how to use computers to find information and
how to use technology to collaborate and present information. It’s
not that technology itself makes a difference, it’s how it is used,
how the teacher sculpts it. "The teacher is not the smartest person
in the room anymore if you have an Internet connection. Newer
high-tech teaching fundamentally changes the role of the teacher --
not a bad thing. Certainly children need to know how to handle
computers and should have access to some at some times, but more
crucially they need the ability to think logically, write clearly
and grasp the fundamentals of mathematics so they can evaluate
information from the vast bathroom wall of the Internet, can
understand and formulate complex arguments, and can understand what
spreadsheet formula is appropriate. To the average adult whose
middle school experience included filmstrips, mimeographs and chalk
dust, the typical day for middle school students may seem like
something out of a Vulcan finishing school or a scene from some
Back to the Future sequel. No More Pencils, No More Books - Just a
Tablet PC. Ken Lyons, Editor Chaplain Message: In a matter of a few
weeks, Americans will make decisions about the future of our
country. We do this annually by electing candidates to political
office. Every four years, nominees campaign for the highest office
in the land – the presidency, of course. The campaigning for the
presidency seems endless, especially when candidates declare their
intentions some eighteen months before the first ballots are cast.
And that’s to say nothing either of the enormous amounts of money
raised to become the next occupant of the White House. It’s enough
to disgust many Americans. They’ve had their fill and just wish it
would all end and quickly too. This feeling is intensified in 2016
because the candidates from the two major parties draw strongly
negative reactions with large sections of the American public. It’s
again – enough – to push some otherwise conscientious voters “to
sit this one out.” I write with the purpose of urging you not to
give in to the frustration and exasperation you may be feeling.
Instead, I exhort you to remember that our civic duties are not
always pleasantly exercised. Continued on page 5
-
Page 5 CLARION October 2016 Continued from page 4 Sometimes, we
have to assume our duties with something like a heavy heart,
grudgingly but surely because we value the common good above
individual predilections. Therefore, let me just mention a few
things as we approach our national day of decision on November 8th.
First, by all means, vote. See your way to selecting a presidential
nominee, but if after trying you still cannot cast a ballot for
President, vote for other candidates who are vying for offices
“down ballot.” Whom we send to Congress to legislate on our behalf
makes a big difference, as does the men and women who stand for
election in state and county races. We always get the government we
deserve. So, don’t sit this one out! Second, be informed about the
issues and the positions of the candidates. Read about these
matters in the print media, tune into televised debates, consult
voting records and arrive at your own considered, prudential
judgments and then act on them. Third, and most importantly, don’t
vote by bracketing your faith; vote by drawing on your faith. Our
faith gives us principles and standards to evaluate the stated
positions of candidates. Among these is the inviolability of the
dignity of human life – every life, including the ones we can’t see
in their mothers’ wombs. The right to life is the foundation for
all the other rights we enjoy. Candidates who are not right on the
right to life must not get our vote. And we cannot forget two other
crucial issues, either. These are marriage properly understood and
religious freedom for all citizens. We cannot compromise on these
non-negotiable truths of human nature. Remember, we are Knights of
Columbus. Our fraternity, men, rests solidly on pro-life and
pro-family convictions. Let’s see what we can do by putting our
convictions into social policy in this election cycle! Msgr. Bob
Batule Council Chaplain Around the Council: Congratulations are in
Order: We wish to offer congratulations to Our Italian Couple of
the year Ed and Markey Pappalardo. On the arrival into the world,
Miss Olivia Ann on Thursday August 25, to Billy and Kathleen
Wisniewski. Congratulations to Steve and Jenna Roche on their
recent marriage. Congratulations to Mike and Donna Curley on their
20th Wedding Anniversary. Congratulations to Chief Squire Nicholas
Librandi as he continues the tradition of our Squires Circle. He
has also been a dedicated Squire and a fine officer. He will serve
his Circle and our Council well. Congratulations to Matthew Kelly
for his service as Chief Squire.
He has been a fine leader and dedicated Squire. I expect he will
prove to be a valuable Knight. Ken Lyons, Editor Golf Outing Thank
You: I want to express my sincere appreciation for the wonderful
support of our Annual Golf Outing Fundraiser. It is through the
effort of our golfers and especially our golf hole sponsors that we
are able to achieve the first principle of the Knights of Columbus,
Charity. Your financial aid during this time will provide double
the impact as it will be applied to the core mission of our council
in helping those individuals and organizations in need as well as
providing resource funding for future endeavors. Thank you again,
your donation is an affirmation of the kindness and humanity that
still exists in the world today. Kindest regards, Ken Lyons. Golf
Chairman Octoberfest: I want to thank everyone for their well
wishes. I went to the doctor yesterday. I must stay off and elevate
my left foot for 10 days. Also I will be in a cast 6 weeks so I
won't be at the Council for a while. I especially want to thank PGK
Kenny Lyons for stepping up to run the Oktoberfest in my absence. A
food basket was donated by Columbiettes and a beer stein was also
donated by Brother Tom Hayden. I want to extend my heartfelt
appreciation to Tom and the Columbiettes for their donations.
Raffles are a critical piece to all successful Council’s events.
Tom Kelly Italian Night Dance: On Saturday, October 8, 2016 we will
hold Our Annual Italian Night Dance at 8pm. Featured are an open
bar, antipasto, a multi-choice buffet, dessert, and a live band for
your dancing pleasure and prizes all for the low price of $50 per
person. For additional information please see flyer on page 12.
This year’s honorees will be Ed and Markey Pappalardo. Ed and
Markey belong to St Aidan’s church. They were married on October
25, 1985. Markey has a master’s degree in computer science and is
web administrator as well as an adjunct professor at Hofstra.

Page 6 CLARION October 2016 Continued from page 5 Ed made his
first degree on December 7, 1995, his sponsor was Tom Kelly. After
making his third degree in March of 1996, Ed got involved in the
council by helping out wherever help was needed. Throughout his
twenty years in the council, Ed has served as the Lecturer and a
community director for Williston Park. They have three children.
Edward, Nicholas, Caprianna. All attending Hofstra. On their first
date Ed asked Markey what she felt like eating for dinner, she
replied anything with mozzarella and tomato sauce on it. And she
has never tired of it. Or Ed either. Words cannot begin to express
what a huge honor and privilege it has been for me to know both Ed
and Markey, our 2016 Italian Couple of the Year. Ken Lyons,
Editor
E-mails, E-mails by the Dozen: So, you’ve been asked to buy
raffle tickets to the Octoberfest or Italian Night Dance by the all
time E-mail chairman of the board, Tom Kelly. Never believe for one
moment that this unique individual would sit slothfully by waiting
for others to ask him for raffles to the up-coming events. Tom is
willing to express his leadership by asking friends, family, and
acquaintances to make gifts of a size consistent with their ability
to give. In the end, the success of fund-raising campaigns hinges
on leadership, and that leadership starts with Tom Kelly. Brother
Knights are the campaign solicitors of first and last resort. They
are the most important fund-raising resource an organization has.
There is no greater strength in a fund-raising campaign than an
individual ready and willing to lead, and no greater weakness than
one which sees fund-raising as someone else’s job. So I say bring
on the E-mails. Ken Lyons, Editor Council’s Food Drive Report:
There are many less fortunate people than I who live an indigence
life, and by no choice of their own. Helping these people has
become a mission of mine. Many people don’t realize how many ways
there are to make someone else’s life enjoyable. Many of these ways
are very simple and can take very little time and effort. The only
thing a person needs is to be a caring individual of not only
yourself, but others. Giving money vs. donating food may sound
avaricious to some. And I understand the argument, but there is
something about the spirit of compassion which is sharing food.
It's a different psychology of here's a can of food as opposed to
here's a dollar. And it doesn't have to be that tradeoff. The idea
of providing money instead of food was not new. Cash can get to
people where food cannot. Giving love to someone is what makes me
feel good inside. I can keep this feeling in my heart and I
know
they feel it in theirs. Every day that I have food, shelter and
water I think of someone less fortunate. 100% of all the money we
collect goes to Corpus Christi Parish Outreach. It doesn’t have to
cost a person a lot of money; it is the gesture that counts. If
everyone just chips in a little bit, the world would be a better
place for those who are less fortunate. When a person gives love to
someone less fortunate than themselves it is a wonderful feeling.
People really don’t realize how fortunate they are until they look
at the less fortunate in world. They are everywhere. It doesn’t
only happen in another city. It can happen in your own community. I
will always continue to be a giver. Whether it is by a monetary
donation, lending a helping hand, a hug, or a just pat on the back,
I enjoy the love I feel from doing this. The smile I see or love I
feel in my heart is the most rewarding experience I can ever have.
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave
me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” (Matthew
25:35) Ken Lyons, Editor C & B News: On Sunday, Sept 18th the
Council once again participated in the Williston Park Street Fair
with a recruitment drive and selling C & B books. We had a very
good day selling a total of 25 books. On Sunday, Oct. 2nd, the
Council will once again participated in the Mineola Street Fair
selling C & B books and a recruitment drive. Last year we had a
great day selling a total of 54 ½ books. I want to offer my sincere
thanks to all the brothers who came out to man our table: Between
the two street fairs, Mineola and Williston Park, we have had great
success in the past with our C & B sales totaling of 88 C &
B books sold. There is no reason why with a little effort we can
surpass that number this year. Volunteers do not necessarily have
the time; they just have the heart. Jim Corrigan PGK C & B

All Brother Knights should make every effort to attend. PGK, John
Mallon, DGK Supreme News: In the weeks following the devastating
flooding in southern Louisiana, recovery and rebuilding efforts
have moved to the forefront. Thanks to the generosity of people
like you, the Knights of Columbus has collected more than half a
million dollars to support those affected by the flooding. These
funds have been used to provide for immediate needs such as food
and cleanup supplies, as well as rebuilding materials and other
items. Along with offering this financial support, Knights have
personally reached out to the flood victims. Although the media no
longer prominently features the devastation, the people of
Louisiana have a long road ahead. Much needs to be done to rebuild
homes and lives. Please do not let these victims be forgotten and
consider donating what you can to help. Thank you for your
continued financial and prayerful support. Knights of Columbus 1

News: Thank you for your continued efforts to serve our fellow man.
We have played and continue to play a
major role in our Church and Community. We need to keep our
ideals of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, Service to our Church,
community and mankind should be our focus. We must bring our faith
into our homes and strengthen our family’s commitment to our church
and the teaching of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Pope Francis
asks, “Who is making an effort to strengthen marriages, to help
married couples overcome their problems, to assist them in the work
of raising children and to encourage the stability of the marriage
bond?” The answer, is the “Knights of Columbus.” I ask of you to be
a motivating factor in growing our Order so we will be able to
address those who are living in poverty. We must keep charity our
focus, caring for those in need. Schools are now open and the
winter will soon be upon us. Many children will be going to school
cold and hungry. We as a Faith Based Catholic Fraternity must do
what we can to give these children essentials to attend school. Let
us make sure that no child goes to school hungry by stocking the
shelves of local food banks through our “Food for Families”
program. Let us provide coats for our students through our “Coats
for Kids” program so they can attend school and play in the snow
comfortably and protected from the cold. Let us partner with our
local Catholic and Public schools by offering our time as
volunteers to assist in the overall education of our children. We
should also be raising funds for our Catholic schools to assure
that they will continue to provide a faith based education for our
children. Remember that our State has a matching grant program for
our Catholic Schools and a scholarship program for students
attending Catholic Schools. Our youth is a reflection of the
generations that came before them. We must show our children that
we, the Knights of Columbus Family, care about them and want them
to be educated, grow in character and realize that the way to
self-fulfillment is through Love of God and their neighbor. Let us
keep pray that our children will have a future filled with hope,
love, peace and God’s Love. Vivat Jesu! Bob Weitzman, SD

Welcome to Corpus Christi Council #2502. As a new member of our
council, we hope you serve in many ways. You may request a hard
copy or join our ever growing e-mail list to receive your monthly
edition of the Clarion newsletter. Through it, you will start to
become familiar with the people and activities that make your
council special. There are so many ways for you to get involved,
join a committee, become a volunteer bartender, help sell raffle
tickets at the many social events, attend at least one meeting per
month, the opportunities to get involved are out there for you to
choose. I think the best part of what our council does is have fun!
The council picnic, the trip to Belmont, the annual baseball
outing. And in September the football season begins, with brother
knights sharing stories of their favorite football team often
resemble a “can you top this” competition. I know that life gets
busy, but I personally hope you will make time to come to our next
meeting. The Grand Knight and any of his officers will be happy to
introduce you to other members who share your interests. Ken Lyons,
Editor Insurance Corner: Long Term Care is an Important Piece of
the Puzzle: Many financial consultants and retirement authorities
emphasize the need for long-term care (LTC) insurance for estate
preservation and family protection. While many commercial life
insurance companies have gotten out of the long-term care business,
the Knights of Columbus considers LTC a very important piece of the
family protection puzzle. The Order has been actively offering our
members this product for nearly 15 years without a premium increase
on current policyholders. Members who wisely purchased a LTC plan
from the Knights in 2000 are still paying the same premiums today.
Even better, our LTC coverage is backed by the full strength of the
Order, which remains rooted in our strong Catholic values. Talk
about stability when it counts. Remember, long-term care policies
are underwritten based on your health, and you most likely will
never be any healthier than you are today. Long-term care insurance
covers custodial care
generally not covered by health insurance, Medicare, or
Medicaid. The coverage which pays for some or all of the costs of
nursing homes, assisted-living facilities and home health care for
people unable to take care of themselves. According to experts,
more than two-thirds of individuals 65 and older will require some
kind of long-term care. The median annual cost for a private
nursing-home room is $91,250, and round-the-clock home care can top
$170,000, according to a new cost of care study. If we have not
spoken about your need for LTC coverage in your family portfolio,
please take some time out of your schedule to meet with me. Whether
you’re 18 or 80, the Knights of Columbus has products that work for
you and your family. You owe it to your family to make sure that
their future is secure. I look forward to meeting with you and
discussing your needs for protecting your family’s future. Will

[email protected] Fourth Degree News: Brother Sir Knights;
It is with great honor and humility that I accept the office of
Navigator. I look forward to a year of dedication and commitment to
the principles of our Order; Charity, Unity, Fraternity and
Patriotism. As we begin our fraternal year, let us remember that
the Order lives and breathes through the good work and dedication
of our membership. With that in mind, let us not forget that if you
know a brother who has not yet joined the 4th Degree, now is the
time to approach them and have them take the next step. The 4th
Degree exemplification will be held on Sunday, October 9th at the
Marriot in Melville, Long Island. Now is the time to act. If you
know a brother Knight who is interested in becoming a member of the
4th Degree, please contact me or the comptroller, Charles Pranci,
as soon as possible. Lastly, please remember that I and my officers
are here to serve you. If there is anything that you should need or
should you need the services of the Honor Guard, please do not
hesitate to contact us. Our next schedule meeting will take place
on Monday, October 17th at Holy Family Council in Hicksville.
Faithful in Christ,

[email protected] Pro-Life Corner: Pro-lifers are the true
peacemakers of the world and that those who would support abortion
promote a false peace. The path to the attainment of the common
good and to peace is above all that of respect for human life in
all its many aspects, beginning with its conception, through its
development and up to its natural end. True peacemakers, then, are
those who love, defend and promote human life in all its
dimensions, personal, communitarian and transcendent. Life in its
fullness is the height of peace. Anyone who loves peace cannot
tolerate attacks and crimes against life. Those who insufficiently
value human life and, in consequence, support among other things
the liberalization of abortion, perhaps do not realize that in this
way they are proposing the pursuit of a false peace. The flight
from responsibility, which degrades human persons, and even more so
the killing of a defenseless and innocent being, will never be able
to produce happiness or peace. Indeed how could one claim to bring
about peace, the integral development of peoples or even the
protection of the environment without defending the life of those
who are weakest, beginning with the unborn. Every offence against
life, especially at its beginning, inevitably causes irreparable
damage to development, peace and the environment. Neither is it
just to introduce surreptitiously into legislation false rights or
freedoms which, on the basis of a reductive and relativistic view
of human beings and the clever use of ambiguous expressions aimed
at promoting a supposed right to abortion and euthanasia, pose a
threat to the fundamental right to life. “My concern is not whether
God is on our side, My greatest concern is to be on God’s side, For
God is always right.” Abraham Lincoln Ken Lyons, Editor
Prayer for the Canonization of Father Michael J. McGivney God,
our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and
orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be
an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the
generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life
and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely,
fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body
which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us
to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work
of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you
glorify your servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according
to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant
the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ
our Lord, Amen. Vocations: There seems to be broad agreement among
individuals that the ordination of married men is the only solution
for the shortage of priests. There is no evidence to support this
confidence, nothing to prove that there are thousands of married
men who would be qualified to be priests if only they could bring
their wives along. Indeed, one must wonder about the man who is
ready to bring his wife and children into such an institution as
the Catholic Church today. Moreover, is it really true that
celibacy is what is keeping young men away from seminaries?
Everyone seems to believe that this is true, so there is no ground
for seeking proof. Yet, in principle, another explanation might be
possible. Perhaps young men are not seeking out the priesthood
because no one is trying to recruit them. The answer to that
question, it appears to me, is to be found in a problem that social
scientists call pluralistic ignorance. Most priests as individuals
are happy as priests. As individuals they do not find celibacy a
serious personal problem. But some people believe that the majority
of priests are unhappy because for them celibacy is a serious
personal problem. Some priests simply will not try to recruit young
men into a group where morale is so low and where there is so much
dissatisfaction unless and until the Church changes the celibacy
rule. In effect they are engaging in a game of chicken with the
Vatican, defying the Holy See to change the celibacy rule or run
out of priests. Continued on page 11
-
Page 11 CLARION October 2016 Continued from page 10 The vocation
crisis may be a matter of smoke and mirrors. But the smoke and
mirrors have a very real consequence—an ever-increasing shortage of
priests. If the celibacy rule is abolished, fine. But let it be
abolished for good reasons—that it is right and proper and good for
married men to be in the priesthood, not because celibacy has
driven out of the priesthood most of those who have left and not
because celibacy as such is the cause of the vocation crisis. These
two reasons are nothing more than smoke and mirrors. Moreover, they
are false prophecies and those who proclaim them false prophets.
Ken Lyons, Editor Seminarians: If you feel a strong call to serve
Jesus generously with your whole life, and you want to be a
faithful son of Holy Mother Church and the fullness of her grand
tradition in all aspects of life, then you may be called to look
deeper into a vocation with the priesthood. Feeling strongly about
developing a filial devotion to the Blessed Mother under her title
of the Immaculate Conception, will help you to develop the purity,
humility, and obedience that you need in your life as a priest. You
should have a certain spiritual attraction for three patron saints:
St. Benedict, as the symbol of unity between faith and culture,
liturgy and life; St. Thomas Aquinas, as the beacon of fidelity to
the Church's doctrine and the papacy; and St. Francis de Sales, as
the gentleman priest of an ever-growing love for those in material
and spiritual distress. As a seminarian you should cherish the
fraternal community life, which is focused on the glory of God in
the liturgy and on a truly selfless life of charity to all. If you
are eager to learn and grow in spirituality and in understanding of
the treasures that the Church offers through her liturgy, doctrine,
and life in the world, and if you want to be docile to the rich
graces flowing from obedience and humility in receiving these
treasures from the wisdom of the Church, then Jesus, the Eternal
High Priest, will embrace you as a disciple of His Church. The
mission of the Church is to continue throughout history the
teaching of the eternal truths taught by its divine Founder and
handed down in an unbroken tradition from the Apostles and their
legitimate successors. It is this unbroken tradition
which, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, guarantees our
union with Jesus Christ who was, is, and always will be (Heb 13:8).
The Church desires to be in perfect continuity with this authentic,
unbroken tradition. Thus, they do not seek to recreate Catholic
tradition, but simply to pass it on to the members of the
Institute. This is living tradition in its true sense tradidi vobis
quod et accepi ("I pass on to you that which I have myself have
received") (I Cor 11:23). Ken Lyons, Editor Nassau Conference:
Worthy Brother Leaders in Nassau County, Please read the following
