5STRONGER COMMUNITIES FOR CHILDREN KNOWLEDGE SHARING SEMINAR SURVEY REPORT
Survey Response detail:
All respondents indicated it was good to have a public discussion about Domestic Violence, and nearly all (95%) indicated it would be good to have more discussions about Domestic Violence in SCfC meetings.
More than 70% of respondents indicated that it would be good to invite people who know about domestic violence to talk about the issue in the community.
More than half of respondents would like more information about domestic violence that they could provide to community members.
40% of respondents would like to hold a special community meeting to discuss domestic violence.
Key points from discussion: » Men in the Katherine community
are driving the response to domestic violence.
» If men don’t change for themselves ultimately they will reoffend. They need to change for themselves, not for their partner, their kids, their court order etc.
» Adopting a “third” person position to discuss the perpetration of violence is often beneficial in the beginning process. This provides the opportunity to explore the use of violence and explain it in the context of why the “other” individual would react and respond the way they did or have done in the past without attributing blame.
» The StrongBala Wellbeing Unit deals with trauma, stolen generation trauma- they try to identify every need and make external referrals.
» Men have to take responsibility for their behaviour – they’re often unable to talk about it.
