At the end of finals last month, we all heaved a huge sigh of relief at having seen through yet another se- mester, but we are faced once again with a new year and a new semester at Bishop. This year will certainly prove to be a busy, yet productive one, with events and ongoing pro- cesses such as WASC accreditation, the implementation of Bishop’s first National Honor Society chapter, and our outstanding band’s accomplish- ments. The lengthy procedure of BMHS’ school accreditation in asso- ciation with WASC/WCEA has begun once again. Every six years, faculty, staff, parents, and even a few stu- dents work with these associations to make sure Bishop Montgomery High School lives up to its reputation and high accreditation. The WASC com- mittee at Bishop, led by Mrs. Fabbri, must complete various procedures to amass comprehensive information from years of data, observations, and Bishop’s schoolwide learning results. WASC is a tedious and long process and even continues into 2014, but we can trust that our faculty and all those on the committee will make BMHS shine brightly like the diamond it is. In addition, with the start of a new school year comes an organiza- tion new to Bishop: the National Honor Society, moderated by Ms. Williams. Similar to CSF in a few respects, the National Honor Society recognizes not only academic achievement but also qualities such as leadership, com- munity service, and character. The acceptance process includes a formal application, review of submitted ap- plications by the Faculty Council, and notifications sent to accepted students after two to three weeks of rigorous review. The first informational meeting on January 17 drew a large crowd of students, a promising beginning for the BMHS chapter. Many students have expressed a great deal of inter- est in applying, proving once again the well-rounded talents and aspirations Above: Vincent Miramontes ‘14, play- ing Mr. Darcy, and Lauren Hugo ‘13, as Lizzie Bennet, reveal their mutal respect and love for one another in one of their few moments of affection on-stage, eliciting a wave of “aww”s and sighs from the audience. Above (left to right): Ms. O’Connor, Mrs. Rodriguez, Ms. Galdamez in the middle of a WASC organizational meeting. of our student body. During the month of April, the BMHS Music Department will travel to Washington, D.C., where they will perform at various venues and explore the nation’s capitol. Mr. Hankey’s brother, Michael Hankey, a U.S. State Department official, will bequeath to the students his extensive knowledge, as well as arrange for them to partake in exclusive opportunities, such as a tour of the Kennedy Center, meetings with local elected officials, a tour of the White House, and many other planned activities. Band member Nia Liggins ‘15 eagerly explains, “[This trip] will be one pulchritudinous experience.” Last semester was a total success with Homecoming Week! ASB was able to keep the Bishop spirit high through the rap battle, Spirit Games, and mini-missions. In spite of all the class rivalry, the Bishop com- munity was able to unite and keep the loving, caring Bishop spirit alive by donating enough cans for many underprivileged families to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner. Following Homecoming Week, the Homecom- ing Dance was beautifully present- ed. This Spring semester, ASB will be coordinating Spring Spirit Week with the theme of “Hunger Games.” The “tributes” of each class will battle neck-and-neck against one another in the Spirit Games, leading to one final winner. Not having been done for years, a second dance will be held during the Spring semester! On behalf of ASB, we are excited for a fun and spirited spring semester! PG.12 Students eagerly awaited the second play of the school year, Pride and Prejudice, and for readers familiar with Jane Austen’s classic novel, this play did not disappoint. Directed by Bishop Alumna Mrs. Moreau, Pride and Prejudice proved an enthralling adaptation for Austen enthusiasts and newcomers alike. In order to first captivate and incite interest in the BMHS student body, cast members Lauren Hugo ’13, Vincent Miramontes ’14, and Morgan West ’13 voiced a series of entertaining announcements on the intercom, building up antici- pation for the play. Set in early 19th century England, the plot focuses on the relationship between Elizabeth Bennet, one of five daughters, whom her mother is anxious to marry off, and Mr. Darcy, the seemingly arrogant member of the upper class and even- tual suitor. The Pride and Prejudice novel, after which our play was based, exemplifies the arrogance and self- deception of these two characters. Filled with drama, tension, and comedy, the play was a huge success. The cast members and director took a few ‘creative liberties’ with some minor plot lines, such as an entertaining episode of unrequited love and the ensuing tactlessness and hilarity, which held the audience’s interest and provided comic relief in the midst of the serious drama. The sometimes called ‘dusty and flowery’ language was handled well in terms of its clearness to the audience but also retained the graceful essence and subtle wit of the original novel. Students, inspired by the entertaining play, even purchased pins support- ing their favorite characters to wear around the school, reflecting the over- all positive feedback. As for the cast, director Mrs. Moreau proudly reflects that “ev- eryone took total ownership of their characters, and they went beyond their comfort zones and did a really amazing job.” The end result was flaw- less; we’ve come to expect only the best from our talented Drama Lab and directors. Students from the first show quickly spread their positive reviews of Pride and Prejudice, leaving the re- maining students eager to attend and still others frantically inquiring about extra tickets, of which there were none to be had, for this play had completely sold out within days. However, much hard work and late hours went into this production, as Mrs. Moreau also shares, “Rehearsals were crazy...be- cause drama lab kids are crazy… but crazy fun.” Thus, Pride and Prejudice proudly joins the ranks of Drama Lab’s many colorful and widely successful plays, with its matchless dialogue, scenery, and the perfect cast. Nearly every student will agree: this play will be a tough one to beat, making for a memorable end to first semester. Pride and Prejudice met with many favorable reviews and provided the perfect close to first semester.
