Fund Set Up to Help Family ofNorth Hampton Police Officer

NORTH HAMPTON — NorthHampton police officer PeterCormier couldn’t have been

happier.He and his wife, Shelby, had just

recently moved into their new homewhere they planned to raise their 17-month-old twins — Brooklyn and Logan.

For Cormier, his family alwayscame first and his career in law enforce-ment came second.

“He was looking forward to startinghis life,” Greenland police officer JamieCormier said Monday while just begin-ning to grieve for his brother, who diedunexpectedly on Saturday after sufferingan apparent heart attack at home.

His sudden death has left a holein the Seacoast law enforcement com-munity and in his family, which is nowtrying to find a way to help supportCormier’s wife and twins through thedifficult days, months and years ahead.

A fund called “Support Ofc Cormi-er’s Wife & Kids” was set up online atwww.gofundme.com/petecormierMonday through the fundraising siteGoFundMe. The goal is to raise $100,000to assist the family.

“We all have to help his wife andkids financially, but we also have tohelp the kids remember who their dadis,” said Jamie Cormier, 44, who’s beena member of the Greenland force for10 years and has served 16 years in

law enforcement.Peter Cormier, 46, was a full-time

officer who worked for the North Hamp-ton Police Department for 18 years andheld several roles on the force. Heserved as a firearms instructor, fieldtraining officer, detective, and formermotorcycle patrol officer — just likehis brother.

He also led the sniper team for theSeacoast Emergency Response Teamand served with the 157th SecurityPolice Squadron of the New HampshireAir National Guard and was a militarypolice officer with the Army from 1987to 1990.

Jamie Cormier credits his brother

with encouraging him to pursue a careerin police work.

“He wasn’t just my brother, he wasmy best friend,” he said.

They always shared the same pas-sion for the job and did so much together,including taking trips to Washington,D.C., for the annual police week andvisit to the national law enforcementmemorial.

The memorial was especially mean-ingful to the Cormier brothers — bothof whom were closely connected tofallen Greenland Police Chief MichaelMaloney, who was shot and killed in2012.

Jamie Cormier recalled how on thenight of Maloney’s death, his brother— as a member of the SERT team —was among those who moved in toremove Maloney from harm’s way.

“We were brothers in family, butwe were also brothers in law enforce-ment,” he said.

SOMERSWORTH — Police werebusy this last week, conducting afive-day undercover sting operation

targeting drivers who were violatingthe new state hands-free law.

Somersworth Police Chief DeanCrombie said the department stopped107 cars and gave out 96 tickets todrivers who were thought to be violatingthe law. Prior to the sting, which startedSept. 23, the department had stopped60 cars and given out mostly warningssince the law went into effect July 1.

The hand-free law was passed in2014. It prohibits New Hampshiredrivers from using mobile electronicdevice unless it’s an emergency. Thisincludes drivers waiting at a stoplight.The driver must be hands-free to usea mobile electronic device except forusing one touch to “activate, deactivateor initiate a function” on the device,according to the law.

After the law went into effect,Somersworth police found that mostpeople were following the law.

“We were commenting on how greatthe law was,” Crombie said by phoneon Wednesday. But then it changed.

“Everybody and their brother wastalking on the phone,” he said.

During the sting, the departmenthad undercover officers holding signsstanding in traffic medians.

One sign said, “WWJD? Repent!The end is near!” Another sign said,“Homeless. Need job. Need money.” Insmaller print, the “Homeless” sign saidthe person was a Somersworth Policeofficer and to drive safely, said PoliceCapt. Russell Timmons.

The idea for the sting, Crombiesaid, was from an article in the Inter-national Chiefs of Police magazine. Thearticle suggested ways to catch phoneviolators. These included using a plane,a tractor-trailer where it is easier tolook down into a passing vehicle, havingan undercover officer on a bridge watch-ing for drivers, and an undercover officerdressed as a panhandler standing aroundtraffic who could witness violations.

“We don’t have a plane, we don’thave a tractor-trailer and we don’t havea bridge,” Crombie said.

The hands-free sting ended Tuesday.Police did not say if they plan to use itagain.

Crombie said he hopes the resultsput a dent in people using their phoneswhile driving.

Somersworth City Council passed

an ordinance to curbpanhandling in July,which prohibits thepassing of items froma motor vehicle to apanhandler. Whilesome of the undercov-er officers posed aspanhandlers, the ordi-nance exempts policeactivity.

One driver, Michelle Tetreault, wasamong those ticketed. She received a$124 ticket for the violation. A firstoffense is a $100 fine plus an adminis-trative fee.

She was in the car with her daughterand saw a person holding the sign,“Repent! The end is near!” After sheinitially refused, Tetreault said she tookthe picture with her daughter’s phoneat her daughter’s request while sittingat a traffic light. After the light turnedgreen, a uniformed officer pulled herover and told her the man holding thesign was an undercover officer.

She said she never uses her phonewhile driving, ever since a 17-year-oldboy who was texting while drivingcrashed and killed her-brother-in-lawin 2011.

“It’s dangerous,” she said.Tetreault supports the new law, but

feels Somersworth’s enforcement methodwas over the top.

“It was a total set-up,” she said.

Lieutenant James ‘Jimmy’ Geraghty is a husband;father, brother, son, state trooper, public servant,military veteran, and friend. He is currently assigned

as the New Hampshire State Police, Major Crime Unit- Commander. Unfortunately, last Thanksgiving he wasdiagnosed with stage 3 1/2 esophageal & stomach cancerand has been battling this illness ever since. He has recentlyreceived some concerning news with his last laparoscopicsurgery and returning to work, at this point, is an unknowndue to the path this illness has taken.

The impact this has had on his family, friends, and theState Police cannot be expressed with words alone. Jimmyhas served the public his entire life. He is a military veteranwho has devoted much of his time to serving not only hiscountry, but the State of New Hampshire, for over 23 years.He is the father of four, all of whom he has put throughcollege except for his youngest, who is still attending theUniversity of New Hampshire (UNH). She has battled witha heart transplant as an infant, and more recently has hada surgical procedure for a sternum repair. She too was diag-nosed with cancer this past year, yet miraculously hasfought through.

The Geraghty family would like to extend their mostheartfelt and sincere appreciation for all of the support,prayers and well wishes from ALL of you. They are trulytouched and cannot believe the immeasurable amount ofshared links, posts and comments which have been extremelycomforting during these uncertain times. Each one of thesehas been read and warmed their hearts immensely; fromfamily, friends, and those they have not yet met. Jimmy isin amazement to see the encouragements from so many

people out there, pulling for him andhis family, giving them the drive tomove forward. There is much love,gratitude and thankfulness from theGeraghty’s to each and every one ofyou. Thank you and God Bless.

What is the Lt. Steven P. DemoNew Hampshire Cops with

Cancer Fund Inc.?

The Lt. Steven P. Demo NewHampshire Cops with CancerFund, Inc. was established in

1999, by Lt. Steven P. Demo of thePortsmouth, NH Police Departmentduring his brave battle with cancer. OnSeptember 25, 1999, family and friends,and brother and sister law enforcementofficers honored Lt. Steven P. Demo ata barbecue, in Dover, NH. The purpose of this barbecue was

to raise funds for Steve to take his familyto Disney World while his cancer wasin remission. During this barbecue, theslogan “NH Law Enforcement Cares”was created to express NH police officersdedication to one another, when inneed. Pleasantly, this fund-raiser farexceeded the financial goal set. Upon the termination of the fund-

raiser, Steve gave $5,000.00 to the NewHampshire Police Association to startthe Cops with Cancer fund. Under-standing how costly a fight with cancercan be, Steve wanted to give somethingback to his brother and sister lawenforcement officers, should this terribledisease strike a NH police officer ortheir immediate family. Hence, a com-mittee was established to oversee theCops with Cancer fund, administeredthrough the New Hampshire PoliceAssociation. Recognizing that requests for finan-

cial aid could deplete the existing fundonce requests for assistance werereceived, the committee planned amemorial golf tournament in Steve’sname, with all proceeds to go to theLt. Steven P. Demo New HampshireCops with Cancer Fund, Inc. On September 26, 2001, 2 years

and 1 day following the Demo Barbecue,the golf tournament was held, and met

with extraordinary support and success.The Golf tournament will be held yearlyto continue to support Lt. Steve Demo’svision and commitment to his brothersand sisters in New Hampshire lawenforcement.

Mission Statement It is the mission of the Lt. Steven P.Demo New Hampshire Cops with Can-cer Fund, Inc. to assist members of theNew Hampshire law enforcement com-munity financially when an officer orhis/her immediate household familybe stricken with cancer. To ease thefinancial burden of a police family,allowing them to focus on what is impor-tant during the recovery and treatmentstages of cancer.

Robert Tremblay came home toVermont to die.

But he lived. And he wrote a book.Tremblay, 47, a Jericho Center

native and 1986 graduate of MountMansfield Union High School, is theauthor of “Twenty-Seconds: A TrueAccount of Survival & Hope.”The book describes his near death

experience at Fletcher Allen HealthCare in February, 2011.“I woke up from it and said, ‘Let’s

go,’ “ Tremblay said, referring to hisdetermination to fight his illness.“Here we are four years later,” he

said. “My disease is in check with med-ication.”Tremblay’s disease is AIDS, which

he said was diagnosed in its final stage.“It just never got caught until it

was almost too late,” he said. “I had 30to 60 days to live.”He was in Charlotte, N.C., when

he was diagnosed with end-stage AIDS.Tremblay wanted to come home to die.

His brother Tom Tremblay, formerBurlington police chief, and his half-sister, Anne Monsell, transported theirbrother from North Carolina to the hos-pital in Burlington, Tremblay said.“Tom brought me from North Car-

olina in a car,” Tremblay said. “And hehad to find every hospital along theway just in case I didn’t make it. I wasbasically unconscious.”At University of Vermont Medical

Center (then FAHC), Tremblay hadwhat he calls a near-death experience.This event and its aftermath are centralthemes in his book.“I basically found myself in a big

red expanse, it looked like a red ribbon,”Tremblay said by telephone. “And thislight appeared, and it got bigger. Andyou could taste it, feel it, touch it. Anda man’s face appeared and asked if Iwas ready, and I said ‘No.’ “And he said there’s something

important you have to do. I touchedhis face. I woke up, and demanded to

U.S. Army after graduatingfrom high school in 1986,and later had a career inlaw enforcement. He wasa police officer in Henniker,N.H., and Deering, N.H.,where he became chief ofthe department.He came home to Ver-

mont over the years, andchose to return when hethought he had months to live.Tremblay attributes his survival

not solely to the treatments he receivedat UVM, but to those who administeredthe treatments and cared for him.“I just hear so much bull … about

what Fletcher Allen does wrong, andwhat everybody does wrong,” Tremblaysaid. “I just thought everybody needsto know. … It’s the caregiver, it’s thenurturer, it’s the person giving the med-ication. ..“The importance of doctors and

nurses is obvious. The things my familydid to help me survive were

heartwrenching.”About halfway through

what was to be an 18-monthcourse of treatment, Trem-blay said he ran out ofstrength and couldn’t con-tinue treatments. The mixof medicines made him feeldesperately ill. He stoppedtreatments and went to Ver-mont Respite House, a hos-pice in Williston.“There’s a lot to be said

for not wrestling so muchwith the path of life, and just

kind of floating,” Tremblay said.Sixty days later, he left hospice and

resumed treatment.“Not many people walk out of

there,” Tremblay said. “It felt like a gift.They are quite incredible people overthere.”One reason Tremblay wrote his

book is to raise awareness about HIVinfection among heterosexuals, he said.“I have to be honest, I lived a fairly

normal male life of trying to makemoney and chase girls,” Tremblay said.“In fairness, I did have blood transfusionstwo or three times in my life. … I’ve

had more unprotected sex than I’vehad blood transfusions.”A year ago, Tremblay moved to

Arizona, where he lives with his fiancéand her three children. His Burlingtondoctors thought he should continuetreatment at the Mayo Clinic there.“They’re doing stuff here I never

heard of,” he said. “I just kind of smileand nod and keep laughing my waythrough it. … I’m great, better everyday. I still walk around with 1/10 of animmune system, but I seem to get betterfrom everything.”One dollar from the sale of each

book will go to an AIDS nonprofit heestablished, GAB: Give A Buck.Tremblay hosted a book launch to

benefit the infectious disease divisionat University of Vermont Medical Cen-ter.“It was an interactive experience

where people came in and networkedtogether and problem solved,” he said.“By the time you were done, in 90 min-utes, you had discussed all the creepythings that no one wants to talk about.”

When we think police officerssaving lives, we often picturean epic act of self-sacrifice

that is fit for the movies — saving a smallchild from a burning building, or divinginto a river to save someone from drown-ing. But unfortunately, local police officersare more often finding themselves savinglives in a less glamorous way. In lightof the heroin epidemic in local commu-nities and nationwide, it seems that ona regular basis they are responding tocases of heroin overdose, at times becom-ing reluctant heroes by helping revivethe victims, ensuring they live anotherday and hopefully seek recovery.

This month, four Rochester policeofficers — Andrew Jackson, Randy Smith,John Bourque, and Lt. Todd Pinkham

— were honored with Lifesaving Awardsfor administering CPR and the automatedexternal defibrillator (AED) device ontwo people who had suffered an overdose.These officers join several others whowere awarded in recent months forsimilar acts, including Officers JustinSeckendorf, Brandon Kimbrough, CraigForrest, and Charles Pendlebury. In eachcase, they had begun the lifesaving meas-ures on overdose patients until EMScould arrive and administer the opioidantagonist Narcan, which is used tocounteract opiate overdoses.�

We can only imagine how difficultit must be to repeatedly respond to over-dose cases. At times, emergency officialshelp revive the patient only to see thesame person experience an overdose ashort time later.�

Rodler stressed the importance of policetruly caring about the community andits people. She said in Rochester, policerespond just as quickly to an overdoseno matter how many times the samevictim requires help — and that is becausethey truly care, she said.�

We hope that through better accessto substance abuse treatment, the heroinepidemic can be reversed. Meanwhile,we commend Rochester police for repeat-edly saving lives, even if the situationseems frustrating or hopeless.�

Some in the community, on socialmedia and in person, have expressedthe opinion that the use of Narcan shouldbe stopped — maybe then, they say,users of heroin will learn a lesson. In arecent informal conversation with Foster’s,one former law enforcement officer saidthat overdose users get revived only sothat they can use again, and again, andagain, all while using up the valuable

time of local police. He said he was sup-portive of solving the heroin problemby simply making Narcan unavailable.We disagree with that sentiment.�

Often, overdose victims find them-selves under arrest after being revivedby Narcan. At NH Listens, Police Capt.Paul Toussaint said that might seem cold,

but arresting a person who overdosedis one of the few things police can do topush him or her into treatment. Of thosearrested for drug possession, manybecome eligible for the Strafford Countydrug court program, which gives thema chance to avoid a jail sentence bygetting clean and ultimately recovering.

Outside of that program, few substanceabuse treatment options exist locally.�

We believe that if the use of Narcan,combined with officers’ unwaveringdedication, can help just one person sur-vive and remain sober, the efforts willbe worth it. ❑

Hundreds Pay Last Respects to Downing

WINDHAM — RockinghamCounty Sheriff MichaelDowning may have only been

60 when he died Friday, but he packeda lot of living in a short time.

He also packed in a lot of publicservice, including lengthy law enforce-ment and legislative careers before suc-cumbing to cancer. Downing, a Salemresident and leader of a number ofcommunity organizations, touchedmany people’s lives.

Hundreds of those people came topay their last respects Thursday duringhis funeral service at St. Matthew’sChurch.

The procession included dozens ofofficers on motorcycles and on foot.They passed beneath a large Americanflag suspended from the ladders of twoWindham and Salem firetrucks.

The officers stood at attention aspallbearers carried Downing’s casketinto the church.

Numerous state, county and localdignitaries attended. Among them wereGov. Maggie Hassan and state SenatePresident Chuck Morse, R-Salem.

The service was led by Downing’snephew, the Rev. Kyle Stanton, withassistance from the Rev. Georges deLaire of St. Matthew’s. Stanton is thepastor at Good Shepherd and HolyFamily parishes in Berlin and Gorham.

“We gather this morning in prayerand grief because a good man is gone,”Stanton said. He said his uncle accom-plished a lot in life and would do any-thing he could to help anyone in need.

“Uncle Michael had a recipe — he

didn’t need 90 years, he probably didn’tneed 60 years,” Stanton said. “He hasno regrets. He’s proud of the life helived and the family he built.”

What mattered most to the devotedhusband, father of five and grandfatherof six was his family and the community,according to Stanton and state Sen. LouD’Allesandro, D-Manchester. Downingwas the oldest of nine children.

Sitting at the front of the churchwere his elderly parents, Delbert andTeresa Downing, and his wife, Heidi,who placed a cross on her husband’scasket.

D’Allesandro, who gave the eulogy,was a longtime friend of Downing, aRepublican. He served with him inboth the New Hampshire House ofRepresentatives and Senate.

“Mike was always there,” D’Alle-sandro said. “In the state, there wasn’tanybody who I think manifested whatpublic service was (better than Down-ing).”

D’Allesandro said when he lastsaw Downing, only days before hisdeath, the three-term sheriff askedwhat he could do to help.

“I don’t think there was a better

guy,” D’Allesandro said. “We lovedMike and Mike loved everyone. ...Therewasn’t anything Mike wouldn’t do foryou.”

D’Allesandro told of how Downing,a baseball and softball coach, starteda tradition in the Legislature of recog-nizing youth sports teams.

“He brought every team in Americato the Senate to be honored,” D’Alle-sandro joked.

Only a month ago, it was Downingwho was honored in his hometown asthe recipient of the annual Chief JohnP. Ganley award for community serv-ice.

Downing graduated from SalemHigh School in 1972 and served withthe 82nd Airborne Military Police beforejoining the Salem Police Departmentand New Hampshire State Police. Hewas also a military aide to former Gov.Jeanne Shaheen.

He served as a state representativefor three terms and two terms as a statesenator, including time as Senate minor-ity leader. He was first elected sheriffin 2010 and last re-elected in the fall.

Shortly before his re-election, Down-ing confirmed he had been diagnosedwith cancer, but said it would not deterhim from serving as sheriff.

“We think we have it under control,”he said.

But the disease took its toll in recentweeks.

Instead of mourning hisdeath, D’Allesandro asked the crowdto be kind to others and lend a helpinghand, just like Downing would.

“Commit to make life better —that’s what Mike did,” he said. ❑

They Didn’t Hesitate to Risktheir Lives for Others

CONCORD — For one afternoon,a group of police officers,teenagers, firefighters, a school

principal and state trooper shared onetitle — hero.

Fifteen New Hampshire residentsand first responders who put themselvesin harm’s way to save the lives of otherswere honored Wednesday during the2013 Union Leader Hero Awards cer-emony outside the State House in Con-cord. The program is sponsored by Cit-izens Bank and the New HampshireUnion Leader.

“These awards are a testament tothe strength of character and spirit ofcommunity found in the Granite State,”said Gov. Maggie Hassan. “Thank youfor risking your lives to try to savesomeone else. Without hesitating toconsider your own safety, each of yourushed into dangerous situations tohelp your fellow citizens. Your actionsreflect the best of the human spirit,and serve as a shining example of theability we all have to make a positiveimpact and change the lives of peoplewe may not even know.”

“This is not something that is givenout lightly,” said New Hampshire UnionLeader Publisher and President JosephW. McQuaid. “It is bestowed upon thoseof our fellow Granite Staters who haveliterally risked their own lives to attemptto save the life of another. As we haveseen before and will see today, thatsometimes ends in the ultimate sacrificebeing made.”

“I look forward to this event every

year,” said Joe Carelli, president of Cit-izens Bank New Hampshire. “It’s allabout citizens helping citizens. Throughyour unselfish acts of heroism, you’vesaved our neighbors and kept our com-munities strong.”

New Hampshire State Trooper ScottFrye, honored along with Manchesterfirefighter Keith Knight for pulling aman from his burning SUV on Interstate93 in Andover, Mass., said he wasamazed by the stories of all the heroeshonored at the event.

“We, as police officers and fire-fighters, we’re almost expected to doit,” said Frye. “In my circumstance,there was a burning car and I just hap-pened to be there. But all these citizenswho do all these great things with notraining at all, I think are a little bithigher than us. It’s an honor to me tobe placed together with all these peo-ple.”

Milford High graduates Molly Men-dola and Andrew Myers, both certifiedlifeguards, were enjoying a ‘Senior SkipDay’ at Hampton Beach last year whenthey helped bring a man and woman

caught in a rip current safely back toshore.

“It’s such an honor to be recognizedlike this,” said Mendola, who currentlyattends the University of Maine atOrono. “I never thought someone wouldmake a big deal out of it, but I am sograteful for the award. I never thoughttwice about going in after them. I wasjust doing what I was trained to do.”

“It’s kind of surreal, but I’m honoredto be here,” said Myers. “I’m just gladeveryone that day was OK.”

“It didn’t matter if you were an on-duty or off-duty public safety official,”said Hassan. “Or a high school studentleaving football practice, or one enjoyinga day at the beach. You all answeredto the higher calling of helping someonein their most dire time of need.”
