December 2013
Winter Clothing Drive for the Homeless
Landstuhl had their first bit of
snow on November 21st, and we
can all smell winter in the air. For
many of us, this just means turning
up our heaters; but this isn't the
case for everyone. In light of this,
Sandra Johnson from the 86th
Force Support Squadron is putting
on a drive to collect winter clothing
for the homeless. She’s in need of
Shoes, Jackets, sweaters, pants,
long-johns,
underwear, hats, gloves, etc. This
is a DIRECT way to help the local
community. No need to send your
money or goods off to some
far-a-way place hoping it is going
to good use. If interested in
donating, contact Sandra Johnson
at DSN 480-6035.
Student Targeting and Reinforcing Skills or STARS Students meet once a week on
Wednesday @ 14:45-16:00 to receive tutoring sessions from volunteers who are
knowledgeable in a broad range of typical intermediate school topics. The tutoring
sessions start on December 4, and continue to meet on the following days:
December 4th, 11th, 18th
January 8th, 15th, 29th
February 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th
March 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th
April 2nd, 16th, 23rd, 30th
May 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th
Students will come and receive tutoring/mentoring help in all subjects. Some
subject examples are English/spelling, math, Earth science, and social studies.
There will be 3 groups of students: 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade.
Sessions will meet at Ramstein Intermediate School, and the program is in need of
volunteers to help mentor these young men and women who sacrifice so much for
their military families.
If you’re interested in volunteering, contact Monique Fees at
The December KMC Top 3 General Membership Meeting is December 17, 2013 at The O’Club on Ramstein. Meeting starts at 11:30; food is served at 11:00!
Do you know of someone who has overcome a personal or professional obsta-cle, someone who perhaps tackled their inner demons? Have you or a peer lost a troop to suicide or are you dealing with PTSD? Has someone experienced a personal loss of a child or colleague? As General Welsh said, "Every Airman has a story" and, in today's busy world and Air Force, seldom do we hear these stories from the source. Help us seek out these individuals that are willing to share their inspirational personal stories in a relaxed setting. The Total Force Development Council will be hosting "Storytellers;" an intimate, raw experience of real stories from our peers. The Storytellers event will be on 12 December, from 1300-1630 in the Hercules Theater. The last Storytellers event was a huge success and had an impressive turn out, let’s help these Airmen share their stories in a comfortable environment by giving them our support. If you’re interested in attending, contact SMSgt Paige Collins or MSgt Adeboyega Adeyemo, or email the [email protected] to reserve your spot.
“Pursue Opportunities” at Next General Membership Meeting
SMSgt Steven Schoen, of the 569 USFPS delivered Decoration Writing tips and techniques to 22 NCO's on 18 Nov 13. This small group learning environment helped the NCO's to develop their Decoration writing skills from the ground up. This course started by taking a look at the recommendation process, common decorations awarded, creating the package and awarding the decoration. Due to high course demand, SMSgt Schoen has agreed to present another small group course for the NCO's on 2 Dec 13 @ 0900. Slots are filling up fast and registration can be done through TSgt Donald Schomburg, SSgt Kevin Ferguson, and SSgt Mary Martin. Contact one of the three POC’s listed to reserve your seat now!

Recent Legislative Updates
The AFSA Chapter 1674 on Ramstein Air Base
announced legislative updates on November 21,
2013. They’ve picked out the key points for easy
undersanding.
. First, the Senate voted to take up the 2014
National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and
immediately stalled, having only reviewed a few
of the amendments offered by the house, it is
unlikely that much progress will be made before
the congressional break for the holidays. Second,
the Air Force has released guidance on the
Survivor Benefits Plan for same-sex marriages.
Additionally, they announced some
December and January key fiscal Deadlines.
·December 13: The bipartisan House-Senate
budget conference committee presents its fiscal
recommendations.
·December 16: Congress is scheduled to begin its
holiday recess through the end of the year.
·December 31: Look for news regarding a
possible civilian pay increase around this time, or
an extension of the pay freeze, now in its third
year.
They January Key Fiscal Deadlines have also been
identified and are listed below. These are BIG
ones.
·January 1: Federal employees will get a 1
percent across-the-board pay raise, the first such
raise in three years, unless Congress blocks it.
Military members will also get a 1 percent pay
raise unless Congress completes the FY 2014
National Defense Authorization Act and
overrules the President’s desire to reduce the
military pay raise from 1.8 percent [called for by
law] to 1.0 percent.
·January 15: The current continuing resolution
funding the government expires and the
automatic cuts under sequestration take effect
for fiscal 2014 on this date, unless Congress
changes the law before then. Agencies likely will
start announcing furlough plans soon after, if the
sequester remains in place. . . DoD has said it
might have to resort to laying off civilian employ-
ees..
