OPERATIONOPERATION
The Magnetic gage is designed so that the liquid being measured is enclosed within a sealed chamber. A stainless steel, titanium or plastic float fitted with a permanent Omni-directional magnet moves freely inside the chamber and actuates the magnetic wafers within the indicator. As the float rises or falls with the liquid level each wafer rotates 180 deg. and so presents a contrasting color. Those wafers above the float show white, while those level and below show red - the indication then presents a clearly defined and accurate level of liquid in the chamber. The wafers resist accidental disturbance (e.g. vibration) due to their edge magnetization and mutual attraction.
Design ConsiderationDesign Consideration
Magnetic Level Gages, depend not only on the integrity of the chamber, but also on the float design and the ability to satisfy all design parameters, i.e specific gravity, pressure and temperature, without compromising the magnetic linkage to the display and associated controls.
Many competitive systems sacrifice display performance by using smaller and weaker magnet systems to achieve low SG and higher pressures, invariably with detrimental effect. Others use guided and vented floats to achieve the same result, which again can prove limiting and troublesome.
Davis-Klinger Engineered Davis-Klinger Engineered Magnetic SystemMagnetic System
The Klinger system, built on many years experience, has taken these factors into consideration in designing out these problem areas. This unique system uses a patented ferrite molded wafer system, which combined with a sealed guide-free float carrying a powerful Omni-directional magnet system, provides ultimate performance and reliability, even under the most arduous conditions.
Magnetic Level Gages SystemMagnetic Level Gages System
Fig.1 Close-up of the Davis Klinger Gage.
It operates by magnetic interaction with float inside the chamber.
There is no requirement for separate piping and so the risk of leakage and environmental problems is greatly reduced.
Davis-Klinger Float SystemDavis-Klinger Float System
The Klinger System employs a non-guided float. To eliminate the potential of float drag and hang up caused by friction, surface tension and particle build up on the inner wall of the gage chamber, Klinger utilizes metal bumpers. The bumpers (1/16” stiff wire) protect the float from friction wear while continuously cleaning the internal wall of the gage, keeping it free from particulate build up. Bumpers also keep the float centered in the chamber.
The Klinger Float SystemThe Klinger Float System
Klinger system employs a sealed float madefrom stainless steel as standard withstainless steel reinforcing rings; specialtymaterials available upon request. The float’slaser weld is offset inside to reduce frictionand to prevent it from rubbing on the innerChamber wall, thus insuring long float andchamber life. Klinger uses a verticallyinstalled Omni-direction float magnetsystem. Superior to horizontally installedunidirectional magnets, Klinger’s omni-directional magnetic system, regardless of the orientation of the float, always interacts with the molded ferrite
wafers to display accurate visual information.
The Klinger DisplayThe Klinger DisplayThe Klinger wafer magnetization technique is protected by U.S., Canadian and UK patents. This unique system consisting of 1” wide molded ferrite wafers, remains magnetically locked in the vertical position until disturbed by the greater magnetic force of the float magnet. The magnetized wafers interlock with each other eliminating the problems caused by vibration. Other non-patented wafer designs can rotate randomly displaying incorrect or confusing visual level information.
The Klinger design has the largest (1” wide) and easiest to read display on the market (red and white are standard but green and other colors are also available). Research shows that red and white offer the best visual contrast while creating the least chance of washout caused by bright lighting or glare from the sun.
Davis-Klinger Patented Float Davis-Klinger Patented Float Failure IndicatorFailure Indicator
Klinger is the only manufacturer providing
float failure indication.Float failure is a
potential problem with any magnetic level
gage.If leakage into the float occurs, or if
sediment accumulates on top of the float, it will
sink to the bottom of the chamber. In all other
designs, the float’s sinking to the bottom of the
chamber causes the display to indicate that the
vessel is empty. Only the Klinger design has an
alarm indicator located at the bottom of the
display which warns that the float has failed,
not that the vessel is empty.
