01.05.09 Issue 17 ENTERPRIZE WEEKLY BULLETIN

It’s been just five months since Mike and Jean Day took the Distributor of the Year title on the NIA stage at the Kleeneze New Year Showcase.Since then, the couple have sailed the seas of the Caribbean, staying in the plush ship owner’s cabin and watched as their business has boomedoff the back of the recession.

Have you noticed therecession having an effecton your business?Jean: Yes. Recruiting is reallygood and there’s such a goodcalibre of people. We started aguy earlier this year who has hisown business and ownsproperties too. He made £250just on his first two drops. He’sa person that you just lovebeing in your business. Hedoesn’t mind getting his handsdirty at all. He’s got a villa inPortugal and his business wasn’tdoing well, but he said ‘I’m notgoing to scrimp on the luxuries’and joined to pay for a holiday!

What do you mean by‘good calibre’?Jean: For instance, one of ourprospects recently was aproperty developer who is nowstuck with 25 houses and can’tsell them. These guys have lostthe money and really want tomake it back. They want towork for it. They’re not scaredof hard work. The ones whostick in this business are theones who get the foundationsright and can teach otherpeople to do the same.

With all the news ofredundancies in the press atthe moment, it must betaking you back to how youstarted in Kleeneze.Mike: I worked for 40 years inthe printing industry as a colourretoucher. I just didn’t seeredundancy coming. I thoughtI’d be there until retirement. Youthink you’re going to getanother job. You even startlooking at franchises…But it’s alot of money to start up andyou don’t get anything backreally for the first two years. The

thought of not making any money until I turned 58 sent me intopanic situation!

Jean: At the same time, Jackie [White] showed us her cheque for£7k. Before that she’d sent us videos and information, but we justweren’t interested because we were both in good jobs. It’s all abouttiming and circumstance. In Mike’s case it was a bit like, ‘well, whatdo you have to lose?’ And, although I was still working, later I wasmade redundant too.

Mike: Around that time, Jackie asked us to come to the JanuaryShowcase. It was a miserable, cold day and we were really half-hearted about it, but it there that we finally got it; realised whatKleeneze was all about.

Jean, you come from a direct sales background.Do you think that helped you get your Kleeneze business upand running so quickly?Jean: I’ve been in direct sales for 25 years, from party plan tocorporate. At the time I was made redundant I was on £40,000 ayear, so even though I was on Mike’s Distributorship, I wasn’t reallyon board. To be honest, my sales background proved to be a bit of ahindrance to begin with. In my hard sell days, you’d go see atransport manager to sell him a car and you’d have to be dead hardand dead pushy. If I went to see a housewife, who wants to earn anextra £400 per month, I’d put her off! I had to be careful. I learnthow to identify with people and relate to them. With Kleeneze, it’smore about planting seeds with your prospect. Do that, get them tothe Showcase and then it will all come together.

Mike: I found sponsoring very difficult to begin with. Because Jeanwas used to the appointments, she’d go in and do all the talking, I’dend up talking to the guy or girl not wanting to talk because Jeanwas overdoing it! Their ears would prick up though when I would tellmy story of redundancy and how I got into Kleeneze. Jean and I werelike good cop, bad cop!

Jean: That’s why we do our appointments together. We’ve got areally good rapport. Try to go on your appointments together, because it carries more weight, you can pick up on who the personresponds to. It’s our strength for appointments.

They say that anyone can succeed in this business. Is thatreally true?Jean: Yes and no. You’ve got to self-develop to succeed. Anybody cando the retailing. Anyone can earn £1,000 in the first month. Weproved it with Mark James (Senior Distributor). However, when itcomes to the sponsoring and the learning of the business, you’ve gotto develop the belief in yourself and the confidence, as well as learnto mix with different people.

How important is sponsoring to becoming a success?Jean: I think you can make good money through retailing. Marie and

ALL IN A DA

Page 5: KLEENEZE 2009 Ewb 17

ENTERPRIZE WEEKLY BULLETIN Issue 17 01.05.09

Jeremy Simmonds, our top retailers, retail about £5000 a month, earning around £2.5k.

Mike: A lot of people come on board thinking they’ll never sponsorbut they change. Especially nowadays when everyone knows someonewho’s been made redundant, it’s much easier. For us the one thatalways stands out is Harry Hancock, the farmer. When he joined hereally didn’t want to sponsor and wanted to stick to retailing. Then hewas talking to his accountant and his accountant asked aboutKleeneze and hearing about it, said ‘oh that sounds like something mywife could do.’ And that’s when it clicked for Harry just how easy thesponsoring side could be.

That just goes to show how simply telling your story can sellthe business. Does your own story help you?Jean: Now, of course, our story helps so much in recruiting, as wewere made redundant too, but before we just used to use otherpeople’s stories. You can always find a story that’s significant and weteach our team to tell the stories that are relevant to the person they’regoing to see.

Does anyone ever come into the business with unrealisticimpressions of how fast and how much they can earn?Mike: Some people think it’s all just about getting people to join, butthey don’t think about supporting them. It’s not the number of peopleyou get in – it’s no good bringing five people in a month and notsupporting them. Sometimes when new people start to sponsor theythink they should bring in the same amount of people in every month. There has to be a bit of a slowdown though while you support thefirst few, then you can move on. That support is such an importantpart of your business.

Jean: People join to earn money,so if you support them and getthem to that 10% or 13% in thefirst four weeks, they’ll stay. Andthat’s easily achievable.

You’ve done amazingly well.Winning Distributor of theYear must have been thecherry on the cake for you.Jean: You can’t even explainhow you feel. You’re sitting therethinking and then suddenly youhear Patrick Jolly say your name.It was surreal. It wasunbelievable. It was the ultimate – like a BAFTA!

It’s such power to keep it in the group, as well. For us the magicmoment had to be when they surprised us at our meeting theweekend after and showed all the highlights of our seven year journey. We didn’t have a clue that was going to happen. The morale of theteam is buzzing now. The whole group is buzzing.

What are you looking forward to now?Jean: What we’re really looking forward to is the business growingbigger. We can see that already from the start and we want to get ourpeople out there, because they’re the next generation. We’ve gotsome really good people coming through and we’re excited for thembecause we can see their future. It is the right time for them to grow.

“When Jean and Mike Day were announced as Distributor of the Year it came as no surprise to any of us in their team. They run fantastictrainings, have an incredible work ethic and make being part of this business so much fun. They have inspired so many of us over the years and itwas wonderful to see them being recognised by the company. After the Showcase, the team secretly planned how we could celebrate togetherin recognition of their achievement. So, we organised a slide show comprising of music and photos of Jean, Mike and the Focus Group fromover the years to show at the key meeting. It was an amazing journey to watch, seeing all the places in the world they have visited not only ontheir own but with many of their team. Needless to say, Jean didn’t stop weeping from beginning to end!”

01.05.09 Issue 17 ENTERPRIZE WEEKLY BULLETIN

At the end of March, EWB askedfor Distributors who would behappy for us to follow them (in anon-stalker like way, youunderstand) through thequalification period for theAutumn and Spring Destinations. No word of a lie, we wereinundated with replies. We’re at aloss to know who ISN’T going allout to qualify for ourDestinations! Unfortunately, wecouldn’t track you all though!

Our new column will follow our Cape(d) Crusaders’ activity as theymake their way through qualification to the Autumn Destination 2009and Spring Destination 2010. So, without further ado we’d like tointroduce our Kleeneze Cape(d) Crusaders!

Autumn Destination 2009 – ‘Blackpool’CAPE(D) CRUSADERS: Sharon Waters and Dave AllsopLOCATION: DerbyshireSTATUS: Silver DistributorsROUTE: Hit Gold Distributor level for one Period, and hold itfor a further two consecutive Periods - 3 in total

How long have you been with Kleenezeand why did you join?We joined in August 2008, as we had gotengaged in April and had planned to have abig wedding. When Dave’s employer cuteveryone’s hours and threatened redundancy,we realised we needed to make some extracash to cover the wedding bills (and all the

other ones that crop up!). After hearing how Kleeneze works andrealising that we could fit it around our full time jobs we decided togive it a go. We are very thankful that we did as Dave has now beenmade redundant and is working full time on the business.

When and why did you decide you were going to try andqualify for ‘Blackpool’?We decided to go for Blackpool after everyone in the Golden Bearshad come back from Vienna and we heard how amazing it was. Sowe decided we were going to do what ever it took to qualify forthenext one as it would be an amazing opportunity to mix with thetop people in Kleeneze and find out just how they had become sosuccessful.

Is it difficult to focus on qualifying for something when youdon’t know where it will be?Given the track record of destinations we don't find it difficult at all tois as we know it will be great even if it is Blackpool! We can’t wait untilthe reveal of the Destination on 9 May – we know it will give us evenmore focus than we already have. Plus Dave will know whether heneeds to invest in a new pair of speedos or thermals!

What are you planning on doing differently to a ‘normal’ timeof year that will help you qualify? We have massively increased both retail and the sponsoring as wewant our business to come out the other side of the qualificationperiod with a very stable Gold business. By increasing the sponsoring,we may even find a new team member who wants to grow theirbusiness and qualify next year!

CAPE(D) CRUSADERS: Andrew Shaw and Ricardo FerreiraLOCATION: SouthamptonSTATUS: Silver DistributorsROUTE: Hit Gold Distributor level for one Period, and hold itfor a further two consecutive Periods - 3 in total

What were your reasons forjoining Kleeneze? We joined on October 1, 2008 just to make afew extra hundred pounds so we could havesome lifestyle money. We were alreadycustomers of Kleeneze, so when we saw aleaflet in our pack of catalogues from ourDistributors, we arranged an appointment to

find out more! I work for B&Q as a Service Manager and Ricardoworks for M&S, so we have to work hard in our full time jobs, butwhat better hobby to have than earning extra money?!

What are your goals for your business? After meeting so many great people that are in the business over thefirst few months, we saw that there was much more to this businessthan just putting catalogues out. We realised we could make a reallyexciting future for ourselves. Our plan long-term is build our Kleenezebusiness big enough so we can sack our bosses and become selfemployed and have control of our own future without relying on thecorporate world. The first step of getting truly motivated was to aimour sights high and try and qualify for the Autumn Destination bybuilding a team as quickly as we can around working full time.

How do you plan to fit it all in around working full-time aswell – will you be doing anything different in order to qualify?Activity - activity - activity. Retailing - advertising - sponsoring -supporting and growing our small team as quickly as we can. We’regoing to fit it in with hard work, patience, planning and truedetermination! Sometimes we drop our customer base before work at5am to make sure we get to our customers every four weeks!

Are you finding it hard to qualify for somewhere, when youdon’t know where it is?We think this is even more exciting, as actually regardless of where it iswe know we will be treated like royalty and will have earned a tripanywhere in the world for free!

Are you excited about the reveal of the Destination on 9 May?Oooooh yes! We WILL be qualifying!!

FROM BLACKPOOL TO CAPE TOWN

Spring Destination 2010 – Cape TownCAPE(D) CRUSADERS: Steve and Debbie RoperLOCATION: EssexSTATUS: Bronze Senior Executive DistributorsROUTE: Hold five-wide status for 5 Periods withpositive growth

How long have you been with Kleenezeand why did you join?We joined Kleeneze in July 1999 after Stevewas made redundant from his job as SalesManager at an Engineering company. Havingnever been out of work previously and havingalways wanted our own business we weredetermined to use the enforced

unemployment as the catalyst to start our own business. Wethoroughly researched the business opportunities market and soonrealised that Kleeneze was in a class by itself. Within a few weeks ofgetting started, a previous employer invited Steve to go backand work for them which he did, content in the knowledge that wecould build our Kleeneze business part-time and then make Steve’semployer redundant!

You’ve been on Conferences before – what is it about themthat makes people want to qualify? The conferences mean different things to different people and for usthey are a very visible sign of the team achieving growth in thebusiness which we hope will inspire others to grow their businessestoo. They are a terrific opportunity to see the world, in style, with awhole bunch of motivated, positive, successful friends and colleagueswho all make the very best of travelling companions!

How did you feel when Cape Town was announced as theDestination in January?Cape Town has certainly fired up a number of people in our InfinityGroup and really lit our fire too. We were with Kleeneze in SouthAfrica in 2004, which was absolutely out of this world, so going backto South Africa and Cape Town accompanied by go-getters within ourown team is going to be magic!

How are you ensuring that you stay on track each andevery day?To really stay focussed on our goals on a constant basis, we both haveour own goal boards, which are a constant reminder of why we arebuilding the business and a reminder of just what is available, givenenough drive and determination. Watching the Cape Town DVD is abrilliant way to motivate anyone into taking the action necessary toqualify. We know and understand that it’s the actions that we each

take consistently throughout the year that will determine who gets thetickets for Cape Town.

CAPE(D) CRUSADERS: Steve Geldard and Cathy BrookesLOCATION: SunderlandSTATUS: Silver Executive DistributorsROUTE: Hit highest 2008 pin level and hold for 3 Periods with15% growth

When did you start up with Kleeneze?I joined Kleeneze in 1995. I’d spend five yearsat university completing a degree in teachingonly to find out that my first year’s teachingsalary of £850 per month wasn’t enough toeven cover my bills, let alone £29,000 of debt Ihad accumulated while studying. Two yearsafter joining, I split up with my partner and

became a single dad so my needs changed massively. I needed theflexibility and the income to spend time with my two girls, so gettingout of my stressful teaching job became my focus. I achieved BronzeExecutive and with a cheque of around £3,000 per month was finallyable to do this.

The next few years I spent precious, valuable time with my childrenand Kleeneze fulfilled all of my needs including being able to send mydaughters, Emily and Kate, to an excellent private school, the best inthe area. No amount of money in the world could have replaced thattime with the girls - it's priceless. In due course I met Cathy throughKleeneze and now, after 13 years in the business, our time has cometo move on massively, we're hungry for the success we could have hadin the previous years.

You were very recently on Club Med 2 – tell us about thatQualifying for Club Med 2 was just the start. It was such an inspirationto be able to spend time with the top achievers and the friends we'vemade over the years and, of course, new friends as well. The bestthing about Conferences is the fantastic people there and beingtreated like VIPs! A just reward for all the hard work!

What’s your next step in the business? Our next goal is to qualify for Cape town and move up the plan withsome of our team - we don't want to go on another Conferencewithout some of them, it just seems to make it a much richerexperience, and I know some of them are inspired by it. We're on theway to Gold SED and winning the Mini and BMW. It's become aburning desire which we are now totally focussed on. We remindourselves of it by focusing on it, visualising it and feeling it every dayand of course working harder than ever before!

Editor’s note: Thank you to everyone who entered the search forEWB’s Cape(d) Crusader. As previously mentioned, we had hundreds ofreplies and are unable to reply to them all personally. However, please let us know how you are continuing with yourqualification and we will endeavour to publish your story in a futureedition of the newsletter.
